Bug#384105: /usr/X11R6/bin/X: X server slow
Dear Brice, > ... BUT, it takes 0.5 seconds in rxvt-unicode. I now tried rxvt-unicode on Ubuntu: yes, it is blindingly fast. (On Monday will try Debian also.) > So this is not a X server problem, this is just a matter of how the X > terminal is implemented. So unless you have a good reason, I will close > this bug. You may want to complain to the developer of your X terminal... I see. Would it be possible for you to reassign to the xterm and gnome-terminal packages, instead of closing the bug? > XFree86 and Sarge won't get fixed anymore. I understand that Etch is not > released yet. But, keeping bugs that are fixed in testing is not really > that useful. Closing them with an explanation is not that bad. Will Etch have Xorg, and if so will it be replacing XFree86 or as an alternative? (It seems the bug is in xterm, in both Xorg and XFree86, not in the X server of either. There was no bug, and nothing fixed, in the Xorg server. Seems I should have reported the bug against the terminals, not against the X server package.) Bug#292540: /usr/X11R6/bin/X: Problems with attaching external monitors to laptops (need to reboot X)
Hi Brice, I have switched to Ubuntu on all the laptops in our lab (workstations currently are still Debian, and servers will definitely stay Debian). It seems to work here without any problems. I have no idea whether the fact that it works is limited to Ubuntu. The IBM GXT2000p is supported on 2.6 as OF FB. The penguin smiles... But xfree86 doesn't handle the adapter correctly, it detects only 4096kb of memory (should be 32M, i guess). I just wanted to point out how the error messages were generated in a suboptimal way. Also, I believe the script tried to display some messages with xmessage, when it was trying to say why the X server failed to start - obviously a poor strategy. If nobody intends to fix this, I guess close the bug. Thanks, -ryan -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#139121: marked as done (xfree86-common: [Xsession] use xmessage to display /etc/motd)
Your message dated Sat, 27 Jan 2007 16:17:29 +0100 with message-id <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> and subject line Bug#139121: xfree86-common: [Xsession] use xmessage to display /etc/motd has caused the attached Bug report to be marked as done. (NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what I am talking about this indicates a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact me immediately.) Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) --- Begin Message --- Package: xfree86-common Version: 4.1.0-14 Severity: wishlist Tags: patch Hi, Included below are patches (for documentation as well as functionality!) to xfree86-common which allow the administrator to enable the automatic display of the Message of the Day ('/etc/motd') for X logins, in addition to the standard tty logins (or PAM authentication via ssh, etc.). Also, the default behavior of the patch is not to change any functionality (it simply enables easy change via 'no-display-motd'/'display-motd' configuration option in '/etc/X11/Xsession.options'). What are the advantages of this? It allows communication of the MOTD to users (most of which now use X-logins). An immediate counter-response might be that this can more easily already be accomplished using gdm's or kdm's automatic facility to display the MOTD. The primary problem with such a setup is that it generally allows users to choose not to display the MOTD during future logins, and many administrators (myself included) might want to ensure that users at least had the MOTD displayed to them every time, whether or not they actually choose to read it. Obviously, one might reasonably point to 'xmotd' as a Debian package which already provides this functionality. IMHO, 'xmotd' is non-ideal as its display looks quite antiquated, and also it generally defaults to a more complicated (albeit significantly more featureful) setup than the simple dead-easy default of display of '/etc/motd'. Further, this also ensures MOTD display will work with non-KDE/Gnome setups. It has explicitly been succesfully tested (both with MOTD-display and without MOTD-display default) in all following combinations (20 total): gnome (sawfish) kdm kde gdm --> windowmaker xdm blackbox startxenlightenment It appears to work fine on the twenty or so public workstations on which I currently have it configured, and, IMHO, would make a valuable contribution to the package. Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) --- Begin Message --- Package: xfree86-common Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-4 Severity: normal In /etc/login.defs I set umask to 002, and that works for logging in on the console or remote via ssh. However, if I use {g,x,k}dm I keep getting an umask of 022, because Xsession is started by the display manager which has a default umask of 022. It seems that Xsession doesn't change the UMASK at all. I think it should inherit the values from /etc/login.defs. But maybe this should be done by the display manager, in which case this bug applies to {g,k,x}dm and whatever other display managers Debian provides. -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.8-1-k7 Locale: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] Versions of packages xfree86-common depends on: ii debconf 1.4.30.5 Debian configuration management sy ii debianutils 2.8.4 Miscellaneous utilities specific t -- debconf information: xfree86-common/experimental_packages: --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- Closing, as suggested by earlier comments (for instance because libpam-umask is available now). (NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what I am talking about this indicates a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact me immediately.) Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) --- Begin Message --- Package: xfree86-common Version: 4.1.0-6 Severity: wishlist The Debian X packages should not use /usr/X11R6. That directory should be make into a symlink to /usr to allow backwards compatibility and a smooth transition. The reason for this (beyond simple goals of consistancy in file locations) is that on the Hurd libraries are not loaded from /usr/X11R6/lib automatically (as it does not use ldconfig). A workaround, setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH does not work for suid or sgid binaries, such as xterm and rxvt (both setgid utmp). A better workaround is getting rid of the whole /usr/X11R6 hierarchy and moving the files there into the normal directories in /usr. Ok, I'll admit that there's a lot of tradition to keeping /usr/X11R6, and the reasons for getting rid of it are not *that* strong. What I'd like as a minimal solution is for the X packages (xfree86-common especially) to handle the situtation properly if the admin of a Hurd (or any arch) box makes /usr/X11R6 a symlink to /usr. Curently xfree86-common fails to install when /usr/lib/X11 is not a symlink (it may also stop on /usr/include/X11, but it doesn't get that far). I've looked through the preinst script but I'm not exactly sure how to properly change it to handle this condition correctly. The steps to change a normal XFree86 install to one without /usr/X11R6 are: move the contents of /usr/X11R6/bin/ to /usr/bin move the contents of /usr/X11R6/man/* to directories under /usr/man (should be /usr/share/man I supose, but that modifies the hierarchy) remove /usr/include/X11 symlink move the contents of /usr/X11R6/include to /usr/include remove /usr/lib/X11 symlink move the contents of /usr/X11R6/lib to /usr/lib symlink /usr/X11R6 to /usr Ideally X should install properly on a machine that alreay has /usr/X11R6 as a symlink to /usr and should be upgradable on that machine. -- System Information Debian Release: testing/unstable Kernel Version: GNU isr5624 0.2 GNUmach-1.2/Hurd-0.2 i386-AT386 unknown Versions of the packages xfree86-common depends on: ii debianutils1.15 Miscellaneous utilities specific to Debian. -- Steven Barker [EMAIL PROTECTED] A city is a large community where people are lonesome together -- Herbert Prochnow GnuPG public key: http://www.students.uiuc.edu/~scbarker/pubkey.asc Fingerprint: 272A 3EC8 52CE F22B F745 775E 5292 F743 EBD5 936B --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- Fixed in Xorg, closing. Hi!, I haven't experimented with that one further (I used the slower but better looking configuration from that time and on, as I remember). About a year ago I even switched to Gentoo and haven't touched a Debian system since. Are you using backing store? AFAICT that's the only situation where miSetShape calls miRegionDestroy. The current backing store implementation is known to be slow (see bug #245548) and buggy (#368063) and will likely only be fixed in the form of a complete rewrite based on the Composite layer. Don't use it. If you're not using backing store, please provide the full xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log files and try getting another backtrace from an X server built with debugging symbols. -- Earthling Michel Dänzer | http://tungstengraphics.com Libre software enthusiast | Debian, X and DRI developer
