Bug#366355: libx11: ssh -X between Sarges XF86 and Sids Xorg7 broken
Hi Guys, About 8 months ago, you reported (a replied to a bug) in the Debian BTS regarding ssh -X problems between sarge and sid machines. I just want to know whether it still occurs with latest packages nowadays, especially Sarge<->Etch. Thanks, Brice -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Minor ABI bumps are backwards compatible, so they merely require the drivers to depend on xorg-server-core (>= ). xserver-xorg-video-1.0 was introduced for a major bump from 0.x to 1.0, which was backwards incompatible. -- Earthling Michel Dänzer | http://tungstengraphics.com Libre software enthusiast | Debian, X and DRI developer

(NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what I am talking about this indicates a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact me immediately.) Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) --- Begin Message --- Package: xlibs Version: 4.1.0-9 Severity: normal Summary: After power-off crashes, sometimes there are stale zero-length .ICEauthority lockfiles (names something like .ICEauthority,l) left which prevents X from starting in the directory in question; instead, it dies with a message like ** WARNING **: Unable to lock ICE authority file: /.ICEauthority This general type of problem is not uncommon; see: http://www.google.com/search?q=unable+to+lock+ICEauthority for more examples. (long version): Howdy, I'm running a couple of Linux boxen as what I call Freeboxes (Free Public Access Free Software machines), also called kiosks. Being public-access, they get crashed via power-off fairly frequently. I'm running XFS, so this is mostly OK. They are set up to use my timed-login hacks to gdm to login a default user after a timeout. Unfortunately, sometimes stale .ICEauthority lock files are left in the default account, resulting in gdm cycling thru attempted timeout default logins, then aborting. I'm using a workaround for now, but I think the right place to fix this is in the X code in question. -- System Information Debian Release: testing/unstable Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux gilgamesh.uruk 2.4.15-pre4-xfs #8 Mon Nov 12 20:53:06 EST 2001 i586 Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US Versions of packages xlibs depends on: hi libc6 2.2.4-5GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libfreetype6 2.0.5-2FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib hi xfree86-common4.1.0-9X Window System (XFree86) infrastr hi xlibs 4.1.0-9X Window System client libraries --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- Closing, as suggested by the submitter who didn't notice this bug for a long time. What I like to see is an option, which keet the two above resource settings for normal and unicode fonts sizes but let the $USER choose with which size (1 to 6) to start. This has the benefit if the resource ".XTerm.vt100.utf8: 3" is used since I can run XTerm with whatever locale I have choosen without changing the font (normal/unicode) manualy. Example: Currently, if I choose ".XTerm.vt100.utf8: 0" or "-u8" and I want to set the XTerm to a specific font size: -fn -misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--14-*-*-*-*-*-iso10646-1 but now if I want to runn XTErm wirh an iso8859 locale and the same font size I have to use -fn -misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--14-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-15 which is realy anoying A better solution is definitivly to set up the desired .XTerm.vt100.utf8Font .XTerm.vt100.font and use only for example xterm -fontsize 4 for example, which mean, XTerm will determiner which locale (normal/ unicode) I use and choose the right registry and encoding. Patch #224 - 2007/2/11 * simplify code for set/reset mode for blinking cursor (patch by Emanuele Giaquinta). * modify dabbrev-expand() to restart after the last match (patch by Emanuele Giaquinta). * add control sequences for enabling/disabling focus in/out event reporting (request by Bram Moolenaar). * improve startup performance of menus by adding resource setting menuLocale which can be set to override X's lengthy initialization of fontsets - which are seldom used for the Xaw popup menus (adapted by patch by Dave Coffin). * modify do_precomposition() function and make-compose.sh to handle 21-bit codes vs the 16-bit codes those were written for, and fix a few mis-sorted codes (patch by Thomas Wolff). * handle special case in -cjk_width which unexpectedly caused a character's width to change when a combining character (patch by Thomas Wolff) * fix build for GNU/KFreeBSD (Debian #40111). * consolidate GC creation/updating into a single module to reduce GC manipulation (prompted by Debian #389476, though a complete fix would involve optimizing the scrolling behavior). * fix ifdef of xtermCellWidth(), which broke for a case without TrueType and without wide-character support (report by Martin Pirker). * undo a comparison in handle_translated_exposure which did not work due to X server optimization. That caused the inner border to be repainted with unexpected colors when handling a repaint, e.g., after switching to/from another workspace (Debian #401726, Redhat Bugzilla #223027). * allow -cr option to override cursor color when -ah option is used (Debian #406502). * add a note in xterm's manpage explaining that the -bw (or -w) option is only used by the window manager, if at all (Debian #405043). * make Selection of VT Fonts work with selectToClipboard resource. * correct length calculation for Selection entry of VT Fonts menu, broken since it ignored the actual selection length since X11R4. * fixes for fontsize changes with -fa option (Redhat Bugzilla #222340). -- Thomas E. In this case, the bug lies in the X server, as GDM doesn't use RandR and just uses the default sync rates provided by the X server. Yeah, I hadn't realized it was until I was going through the pile of recent upstream commits. Check out 788cfce911793a26aed16f38f30678ecee82c873 from Michel: "Bump video driver ABI version to 1.2. This is necessary because server-1.2-branch bumped to 1.1 for xf86CVTMode and we have xf86XVFillKeyHelperDrawable on top of that." So the ABI did get a bump, and so we should make sure we're coupling the drivers to the server tightly just in case. It shouldn't be too big of a deal, we just have to make sure that the upload of the server and the drivers to unstable is coordinated. - David Nusinow -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Were any of these symbols ever exposed in the published headers? If not, then I think it's pretty clear-cut that the symbols are internal and can be safely dropped without worrying about ABI breakage. If some of these symbols were exposed in the headers, it's less clear; even if no Debian packages use them, there could still be third-party software that does, so bumping the soname is still the right thing to do. But there's sure to be resistance upstream from those indoctrinated into the Red Hat school of library management, as there was for freetype, so the path of least resistance would probably be to leave the soname alone, "hoping for the best". Bug#408482: French Canadians really using us keyboard layout?

According to this criteria, neither the France-French nor the Canadian-French nor the Belgium-French keyboard are good: - the Canadian-French keyboard requires two keystrokes for èçàù and ÈÇÀÙ; it has a single-keystroke only for éÉ. - the France-French keyboard requires "funky compose key combinations" for ÉÈÇÀÙ; it has singly keystrokes only for lower case accented letters and no dead accenting key. - the Belgian-French keyboard requires two keystrokes for ÉÈÀÙ; it has single keystrokes only for lower case accented letters, but features dead accenting keys (as an AltGr combination if I remember well). I'm not sure about Ç anymore. You might be thinking of the "Canadian Multilingual Standard" keyboard, but this one is indeed (so I've heard) difficult to find in Montreal. As all those programs are quite small, I'd rather suggest to look at dependencies for neecessary programs than looking at non-necessary apps. Having an xcalc noone uses is no big harm and people not using it will be affected more by the larger Packages files to download. xauth on the other hand is often needed on small systems (so that X tunneling over ssh works) and having to install a package depending on such things like libfontconfig and all X libraries possible for something that should only need libxau is quite a hassle. In my opinion, you are over-inflating it. I do it every day; all you need is one key configured as compose key (Multi_key in x.org parlance). Both the Linux console and X support that concept. I can imagine that a handicapped person would be challenged to type û, because it requires three keys at the same time (compose-shift-6), but then sticky keys would address that (in X), I presume. Oh, and I just discovered that typing compose and shift-6 in sequence instead of together also works. So trouble gone, only max two keys at the same time, which is needed *all* the time when using a keyboard. So, even more, for a "normally constituted person", what's the trouble? It might cut down a bit on your wpm (words per minute), that is true. -- Lionel -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
