Bug#309226: xnest: crashes when window is shaded or a different virtual desktop is selected

About 2 years ago, you reported (or replied to) a bug in the Debian BTS
regarding Xnest (quite randomly) crashing when switching between virtual
desktop. I tried to reproduce with current Xorg 7.1 and Etch but I
couldn't. Did any of you guys reproduce this problem recently? If so,
could you give any hint about how to reproduce here.

I don't have an Etch box with a head on it to reproduce yet. Unfortunately I
can't really add any more than I put in the original bug report against
Sarge. If you've sucessfully managed to run Xnest for a few hours while
switching desktops in the course of normal use then I'd be happy for you to
close the bug.

 Hi Sven,
 I'm trying to get X-window working on a IBM pSeries 650 POWER4+ (powerpc64).

I installed Debian Etch without problems but without the graphical installer

 GTK minicd installer, though.

Problems came out when tried to install xorg co. Unfortunately, Xfree86
doesn't work on ppc architecture within Etch, afaik.

 My graphics adapter is a GXT135P (i.e. Matrox G450), with a mga g400 chipset

Bugs between Xorg and MGA are well known, and I got them all :S

As a matter of facts, I always get (EE) No devices detected when starting

Is it a kernel start issue ? (let's say video=matrox:... something)

I even tried getting Original v4.4.0 drivers from ftp.matrox.com, or v4.4.2
unofficial drivers from the net, but couldn't manage to compile in my ppc64
 architecture...
Any help on this particular point ?

Btw, I both tried the Debian Etch shipped kernel 2.6.18-3 image, loading
external fb/mga modules, and also customizing and compiling my own kernel 2
6.18-7 from patched sources. If needed, I could post the required .config
 statements... Let me know about.

Here we go with the Xorg configuration and output:

Well, matroxfb is said to be not so operational, but should be builtin, you
could try a : video=matroxfb and see what it says.

That said, this is a problem of the X server, which apparently doesn't know
about pci domains or something, i am not sure it is really a bug or something
else. Did you compile your X alone, or use the debian one ?

Can you try removing the pci id line from your config file, so X detects the
cards himself, and see what it says in the config files ?

Vut debian-x is probably the better channel for this one.

XFS doesn't check to see if it's config file exists; if it doesn't, it simply
dies an unusual death. Granted, the config should be there, but it should die

Bug#348639: xfs preinst and postinst scripts stop daemon but fail to restart it

2007-02-19 Thread Brice Goglin
Hi,

About a year ago, you reported a bug to the Debian BTS regarding xfs
failing to restart. But you didn't post any error message or anything
else to help us to debug. Did you reproduce this problem recently? If
not, I will close this bug in the next weeks.

Thanks,
Brice

Bug#308610: [ati] monitor does not sync irrespective of config

The DFSG versions of xfree86 have had this problem with onboard ATI in
the SunBlade 100. (This also exists xserver-xorg. A new problem is
that fbdev crashes kernel so you must try xorg without using fbdev to
avoid crashing system, but still get a blank screen.)

The sarge SB100 has xfree86. Please, leave open so I can take this off
hold and repost to same bug number with new version.

I have a patch in kernel-source-2.6.8/arch/sparc64/kernel/pci.c
for old 4.2.1-12.1.
So try newer xserver-xfree86 on kernel without it too.

(The etch SB100 is headless. I'll check my other posts re xorg and
kernel later. I don't know ATI PCI with PC x86 firmware can be used.
Will try this in headless etch machine first after current versions
of xserver and a kernel that does not crash. Lack of a reset button
is a serious problem on the SB100 as I can not enter firmware with
L1-A and there is no panic for an automatic restart. Will see if
'software wachdog' can cause a panic that would otherwsie be a hang.)

 Thanks,
 Brice

Hi,

While cleaning the XSF BTS, I found this old wishlist about your plan to
run XFs as non-root user. The thread ended in november 2003 but I didn't
see anything happening accordingly. Did the idea get abandoned? Should I
keep the wishlist open?

Thanks

Bug#348639: xfs preinst and postinst scripts stop daemon but fail to restart it

2007-02-19 Thread Matt R Hall

Salutations,

I must say this bug is not the sort of thing you get an error message
for. Basically what happens is if you perform an upgrade to Debian
which upgrades the font server, the font server is stopped by the
preinst script, then the new files are extracted, but then it appears
that the server is not restarted by the postinst script.

To show what the end result of this is, let's say you run a
dist-upgrade then try to restart X later. If, like me, you use the
font server as your font path to avoid having to manually configure
font directories, you will find that X cannot start the next time
because the font server is not running.

Since normally one is not used to package upgrades having such cryptic
side effects, I filed this bug after I noticed the problem persisted
through about 2-3 font server upgrade cycles that occurred back at
that time.

HTH,
Matthew Hall

Bug#181423: there's an xorg.conf option for that

2007-02-19 Thread Andrew Young
 Andrew Young wrote:
according to the man page ob the xorg keyboard driver kbd,
there is an option to change the keyboard delay and rate.

 Option AutoRepeat delay rate
sets the auto repeat behaviour for the keyboard.
This is not implemented on all platforms.
delay is the time in milliseconds before a key starts repeating.
rate is the number of times a key repeats per second.
   Default: 500 30.

 Maybe this helps.

Thanks! It certainly seems to solve my problem. (I set the argument
to 250 10.9 and it seems to work in the VCs as well as in X.)

Do you consider this as just a workaround and the bug is still there? Or
 is the bug really resolved?

I'd say it's a workaround, and the bug is still there. Unless the
behavior I experienced is intended, and clearly explained (along with
the workaround) in the documentation, I'd say it's a bug.

Bug#367947: Ultra10 X Problems after dist-upgrade

2007-02-19 Thread Brice Goglin
Brice Goglin wrote:
Let's see what you get with the ATI driver, the other warnings might be
related to the VGA driver. Try without DRI first.

Okay. I now get a new and different behavior: an all black screen. I
commented out the 1600x1280 resolutions ('cuz it's an older CRT that
might not handle it, I guessed), and no change. Oh, and it beeps at
 me -- I can't alt-Fn or control-alt-Fn to another virtual desktop.

Are you sure that your vertical and horizontal sync ranges are ok? Or
did you just choose them randomly? Do you by chance remember what you
had in XF86Config when it worked? Looking at the /etc/X11/XF86Config*
files that remains on your machine might help, we never know...

Also, you could eventually try much lower resolutions. Once we'll have
found a working setup, even very minimal, it might be better to fix the
 remaining problems.

Just to be sure, could you look at http://wiki.debian.org/XorgOnSparc
and see whether it talks of some hardware you have?

There are still things about DRI in your Xorg.0.log, apparently caused
by AIGLX being enabled by default. You could try add Option AIGLX
false to the ServerLayout section and see what happens. But there are
very few chances that it actually helps.

I am running out of ideas here, apart from trying a 2.6 kernel.
Eventually, you could install xserver-xorg-video-vesa and try the vesa
 driver instead of ati.

Hi Stewart,

Is there anything new about this bug? Did you manage to look at what I
said above?

Thanks,
Brice

Seeing this failure while loading int10 reminds me of other problems
that we were able to diagnose by looking at stderr of X (symbol linking
problems). Could you try to reproduce after redirecting both the stdout

Note that my configuration is different from the original

Of interest too, in Xorg.0.log.old I got a backtrace of the crash:

Yes, I think we should definitely fix this for lenny.

Bug#401524: Challenge to both Aurora and Debian Sparc lists

2007-02-19 Thread John Zbesko
The ServerFlags section does not help, though it did have an effect. I
have to deliberately add an error to xorg.conf and when the box boots,
it displays a console graphics screen saying that xorg.conf is
improperly configured and I am able to drop back to a login prompt.

I login normally, fix the xorg.conf file and type at the command line: X

Next, I see the console graphics screen about xorg.conf, but in reversed
(?) colors. The keyboard and mouse are unresponsive. kill -9 X_PID
does not seem to restore the session, nor the keyboard. I'm only able to
use the keyboard by remotely rebooting the machine.

The only statement from gdb I get is:

0xf7ca3070 in select () from /lib/v9/libc.so.6

My Xorg.0.log is:

uh, read the bug, please, this is a regression introduced by the int10
patch in 2:1.1.1-17, so we might want to fix it.

Benjamin, could you try commenting this line in your xorg.conf:
Option UseInt10ModuleTrue
and tell us whether that fixes it?

Thanks,

Bug#367947: Ultra10 X Problems after dist-upgrade

2007-02-19 Thread Stewart Stremler
begin quoting Brice Goglin as of Tue, Feb 20, 2007 at 12:07:26AM +0100:

Did you manage to look at what I
 said above?

Sorry, got a little busy.

I let the system choose the horizontal and vertical sync ranges;
however, it *used* to come up with the black-and-white stippled
background with the X cursor, which implies (to me) that the sync
values are okay, 'cuz that's what I expect to see when I type
startx.

I'm not sure the XF86Config values will be any good, as I did full
purges of all things X and then reinstalled a few times.

Using control-alt-keypad-{+/-} should step through the resolutions,
so I should get to a much lower resolution that way, yes? It doesn't
work, but it beeps like mad when I hit the alt key anyway, and I
can't even alt-Fn or control-alt-Fn, so there's something screwy
about the input now.

The Wiki has a mention of someone using an Ultra10, but having to
disable some sort of card. I have not chased this down, as I
don't know if I have that card, nor what the card would look like, nor
am I sure my work would like my playing with the hardware like that.

That does seem to be the most promising line at the moment, however.

IIRC, I added the Option AIGLX false as recommended, and as you guessed,
no change.

I have not tried installing the 2.6 kernel (I'd like to hear of someone
running 2.6 on an Ultra10 first, as I had very bad luck with that from
before).

I have not tried the xserver-org-video-vesa yet (I had wanted to try
that before responding, and then Stuff Came Up, and it got pushed
off my plate for the moment).

I truly appreciate the efforts you've made in trying to chase this
down. I hope I can solve this before the whole issue is rendered
moot, as long-running problems are apt to be overcome by events.

Thanks again. I meant to find out if you were going to be at SCALE,
but I forgot to ask. Were you, by any chance?

-Stewart
