Bug#412275: no display and system freezes after adjusting time with KDE clock on 945GM graphic chip

2007-02-26 Thread Ralph Plawetzki
On Sun, Feb 25, 2007 at 09:53:32PM +0100, Brice Goglin wrote:

There's probably another problem apart from X freezing when the time is
changed. Maybe the system clock is not stored correctly in the hardware
clock before shutdown. I remember having problems like this on a core
duo processor because hwclock needed the --directisa command line option.

You could try without a X server at all, check the time from a virtual
text console, change it, shutdown, restart and see what time you get.
Anyway, that would be a bug in another package.

 Brice

I was able to change the time using the date-command. This worked from within
KDE
using a text console as well as in single-user-mode without a X server running
using
the virtual console.

The new time was stored in the hw clock in both cases and displayed when using
'$
date' after restarting the laptop. The time displayed using '$ date' was still
one
hour behind the time displayed by the KDE clock.

To look after the one hour difference between the two clock-displays I used '#
tzconfig'.
It said Your current time zone is set to Unknown
Do you want to change that? [n]: y
...
Your default time zone is set to 'Europe/Berlin'.
Local time is now: Mo 26. Feb 10:48:17 CET 2007.
Universal Time is now: Mo 26. Feb 09:48:17 UTC 2007.. After that the time
show in the
'Adjust Date Time...'-dialogue was the same as the time show in the
KDE clock.

When I then open the 'Adjust Date Time...'-dialogue again and change the time,
clicking OK still makes the screen dark and freezes the system.

Given all this, can we at least enable the Composite part by default to make
Intel cards work?

Beryl works quite well on my ATI r300 using XAANoOffscreenPixmaps -
well, excepted I can't resize windows and sometimes the whole thing just
freezes.

Yes, but as Brice said before we shouldn't enable these options unless we
know what the drawbacks are. Maybe you can investigate about that?

My point is that if we don't figure that out satisfactorily in time, we could
just enable the Composite extension, which sounds fairly safe, and seems to be
enough for Intel cards. And Intel happens to be the card brand we have the
best driver support for (compared to a RE'd driver for ATI and nothing for
nVidia), so focusing on it makes sense to me.

Bug#412528: Uzbek keyboard layout is not standard compliant

2007-02-26 Thread Mashrab Kuvatov
Package: xkb-data
Version: 0.9-4

Uzbek keyboard layout is not standard compliant. The attached patch fixes it.
I was accepted by the upstream maintainer. Please see the following upstream
bug report:

http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10091

The attached patch is from the following URL:

http://webcvs.freedesktop.org/xkeyboard-config/xkeyboard-config/symbols/uz?r1=1.5r2=1.6view=patch

Could you please include it into coming release of Debian? Uzbek users of
Debian would appreciate it much.

Thanks in advance,
Mashrab.

I've already reported the same problem for version 4.1.0-17, now it's
back.

Here's how I've patched the configuration files in /usr/lib/X11/config
to get the macros for linking and installing a shared library and
makedepend working.

Quake 3a used to work with hardware accelaration till X 4.0.3.
I am running the 2.4.17 kernel, with DRI support compiled into the
kernel for i810. (xserver-xfree86 is 4.1.0-11)
Hence, q3demo starts up, but uses software rendering, which is really
really slow.
However, it hasn't worked ever since. The DRIsetup binary from
dri.sourceforge.net says that DRI is not installed.

I am including my XFree86.0.log and XF86Config-4.

Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.0.3-3
Severity: minor

If the matroxfb driver is used (1024*768/100Hz, nice 128*48 text console)
and the X server (1152*864/100Hz) is running with DRI enabled, the text
console sometimes gets corrupted when something is written to it. It is
not fatal - switching to another virtual console and back to the one that
was corrupted fixes it. Happens with both G200 (8MB) and G400 (32MB dual
head, but only the first one used) cards, AGP 1x and 2x, 2.2.19 and 2.4.4
kernels, BIOSTAR M6TBA and ASUS CUBX motherboards (both 440BX chipset).
I can send more details (XF86Config file etc.) on request, please ask.

I've been using matroxfb and X (3.3.6 and 4.0.x) with these Matrox cards
for quite a long time now, no problems at all if DRI not enabled.

Thanks,
Marek

Package: x-window-system
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-8

Hello,

Every time I have a hardware reboot the machine (Dell with an i845 Extreme
Graphics Accellerator) locks up. I am running kernel-image-2.4.27-1-686 and
libc6 version 2.3.2.ds1-18.

Oddly enough shutting the machine off and letting fsck remount the screwed up
filesystem seems to fix the problem. It's locked up twice in a row the
same way, and in just the same way trying to start it again has worked both
times. I'm not going to be shutting it off much any more so I don't know how
consistent that behavior will be...

Also I am sure that it didn't start right after I got the new version of
x-window-system going. Anyway, here are the relevent logs. I will also
submit a report to the XFree people.

Thanks,

Eric Dickner

After upgrading to the latest xfree package on 04/29/04 (using Debian Sid
and a 2.6.5 kernel), the scroll wheel on my IntelliMouse Explorer Optical
PS2 device will no longer scroll in the upwards direction. The mouse will
now only scroll downwards, but not upwards, using the wheel. Everything was
working fine just before the upgrade. I am fairly certain this is due to
the XFree update. I am using ImPS/2 for my mouse protocol.

 Folks,

I am trying to get Debian loaded on a Dell GX110 workstation (the one
with the integrated Intel 810 video chipset). When I try to startx,
it fails and produces the following dump in /var/log/XFree86.0.log:

 File: XFree86.0.log
I am enclosing the /etc/X11/XFConfig-4 file:

 File: XFConfig-4
The message comes back that startx failed to load module i810. I
 have confirmed the presence of
 /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/i810_drv.o.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

I am setting up Debian 3.0.r2 (woody) on an Intel PII system. It has an
on-board S3 Trio 3D graphics chip but since it only has 2MB, I installed
a fairly recent card with an nVidia GeForce4 chip.

The install seemed to go reasonably smoothly but when I tried starting X
manually, I get errors. I then rebooted and still got the same errors
when the kernel tried to start X:

(EE) no devices detected
Fatal server error:
no screens found

Alhough the XF86Config-4 file seems to think that the graphics Device is
an S3 Inc Trio 64 3D, I think it is using the nVidia PCI card. I tried
diabling the framebuffer but that did not help.

I have attached
the log file
XF86Config-4
the output of scanpci -v

Please let me know if there is a fix for this.

Best wishes,
A Varghese

since the update of 19/09/2005, when the gnome desktop environment
starts, I get these error messages:
The Window List applet appears to have died unexpectedly.
Do you want to reload this applet?
(if you choose not to reload it at this time you can always add it by
right clicking on the panel and clicking on the Add to panel submenu)

I also have this problem with Workspace switcher and Show Desktop
applets. Moreover, it seems that applets load slower than before the
update and sometimes I've got a problem with the gnome-terminal applet:
I click on it, wait a few seconds with the please wait mouse pointer

I'm having trouble that I just noticed when I installed this package.
The difficulty is that when a 3d program (such as glxgears) is run, I
get output of the form:

libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x23
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x24
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x27

libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2c
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2f
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x30

glxinfo still is able to run, but other applications fail. Stellarium
(available on sarge but newer version I installed from stellarium.
sourceforge.net) qill not run, or only partially start with a GL screen,
then abort with a sigsegv. Prior to the update, everything was working
all right.

Noted that the glxinfo is in here somewhere. I do not understand how
'slow' is reported. The same info (i.e., slow) gets reported if I try
latest kanotix or pclinuxos but there stellarium runs and I don't get
the above diagnostics.

Having only recently been able to get dri working over here, any other
help or if you can fix this bug or help overcome it, please let me know.

Since then only kde apps (and opera) display the correct characters. All

XFree86 unset LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable, so in X is blank. I also tried
to start X with xinit command but with same result. After return from X
variable is set right.

LD_LIBRARY_PATH is needed by java to point to directory /usr/lib/jni
used for non-java libraries such as libJavaEditline.so.

Problems:
Once a program uses the IMPS2,IntelliMouse, protocol, no other programs
can communicate with the mouse correctly unless they use the IMPS2
protocol too.

Examples:
Running gpm with IMPS2 -- works ok.
Then run Xfree86 -- mouse skips around and clicks everywhere, even after
GPM is killed, must select IMPS2 to fix the error, or reboot and not
start GPM.

or
Running Xfree86 with IMPS2 then gpm wont work with standard PS/2 until
system is restarted.

Also, svgalib does not support the IMPS2 protocol so all programs that
use the svgalib for mouse input malfunction after gpm or Xfree86 is run.

Hope this helps

too confusing ... to tolerate. I do find it confusing when you suddenly

Hi...

Small debconf script bug, I think.

I just did a
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-common
and changed the nice value of the xserver from -10 to 0 using debconf.

However, Xwrapper.config looked like this after doing so:
### BEGIN DEBCONF SECTION
# Do not edit within this region if you want your changes
# debconf. Instead, make changes after the ### END DEBCO
allowed_users=console
nice_value=-10
### END DEBCONF SECTION

Running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-common confirmed that no change had in fact
been made.

Repeated attempts to use dpkg-reconfigure had the same result (ie. nothing).
In the end I changed it manually to 0, which worked.

=)

Currently the postinst creates a temporary file in /tmp for the new
Xwrapper.config. There is no benefit in doing this,
it might as well use $XWRAPPER_CONFIG.dpkg-new all along with no loss of
functionality.

For SE Linux a file created in /tmp gets a different context, and if it is
moved to /etc and /etc and /tmp are in the
same file system then it retains a type that prevents most domains from
accessing it.

When upgrading the X-related packages on my testing system to the
new 4.3.0-2 series I observed the following line at postinst time:

parse error reading X server string `intelfb'

I did not really found out to which package this might be related.
This line was followed immediately by

start_configlet: configlet in path /usr/share/configlets/xserver-common is bad

I can reproduce the last line whenever I try to

  dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

I get this error message. After this no /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
is created at all which renders the package unusable (at least for
those people who have no idea how to build it by hand).

If I use an older /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file I created with the
last packages from experimental I just get a black screen. This
might or might not be related to #226430. Because there is no
comment on this bug I guess it is not yet solved and I think the
severity of this bug has to be increased because I'm not able to
use X on that box in question at all (while there might be good
chances that it would work with some former experimental packages).

Kind regards and thanks for caring for the X packages

Andreas.

Ok, here's the deal. A few weeks ago, I rebooted my
machine and, for some reason, X loaded up on VT #2. I
thought it odd, but was able to change VTs. After
another reboot a week or so later, X was back on VT
#7, but then I could not change to another VT using
the CTRL-ALT-+ or - hotkeys. I also could not change
resolutions. I ran xev and spied on the keycode
mappings, and sure enough, they were correct for both
sets of key combinations. So at this point, I'm
assuming it's some stupid gnome settings daemon or
something similar. So I loaded up X as root, same
issue. I created a blank .xinitrc, without even
loading a WM, same issue. I can, however, change
resolutions using xrandr and I can change VT's using
chvt, but these are not good solutions, imo. One
other thing I noticed: when I attempt to play a game,
say, quake3, and I specify that it should be
full-screen, it goes full screen but flickers
horribly. And one more clue: if I change resolution
to something lower
than my standard (1600x1200), I cannot page the
virtual screen size around using the mouse. I
obviously feel that all of these issues are related,
but I've got no idea what could be causing this.

Kindest regards,
~Zaq Rizer

Attempting to use startx from non-root account suffers fatal server error
'Cannot move old logfile /var/log/XFree86.0.log.old', even after
running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-common, and selecting 'Console Users Only'.

After ripping down my filesystem to reorganize my partitions, and installing
from floppies and .deb files brought home from the library on ZIP disks (lack
of Internet pipe at the time) a 100MB worth at a time, last September, I had
this problem and worked around it by modifying a start-up script (I'm
struggling to remember which one), and, ultimately, setting
/usr/bin/X11/XFree86 (I think) setuid.

One ramification of this work-around was that ~/.xsession was being ignored,
unlike when using previous version, but I succeeded in using .xinitrc for the
same functionality.

This worked until upgrading this evening from -8 to -10. Now I'm back to the
same place, thinking one ought not have to setuid by hand when debconf ought to
take care of it (and not remembering quickly what that script I modified is -
old age, I guess) .

The way ssh-agent is started in 90xfree86-common_ssh-agent is not very
flexible. In particular it makes it impossible to start extra processes
like an xterm or two that would inherit the SSH_XXX environment
variables.

So what I propose is the following:

 * Replace 90xfree86-common_ssh-agent with the following
--- cut here ---
SSHAGENT=/usr/bin/ssh-agent
SSHAGENTARGS=

if grep -qs ^use-ssh-agent $OPTIONFILE; then
  if [ -x $SSHAGENT -a -z $SSH_AUTH_SOCK -a -z $SSH2_AUTH_SOCK ]; then
if [ -f /usr/bin/ssh-add1 ] cmp -s $SSHAGENT /usr/bin/ssh-agent2; then
  # use ssh-agent2's ssh-agent1 compatibility mode
  SSHAGENTARGS=-1
fi
  fi
fi
eval `$SSHAGENT -s $SSHAGENTARGS` /dev/null
--- cut here ---

   'ssh-agent -s' outputs a mini-script that sets the SSH_XXX variables.
Our eval runs this code which sets the environment variables in the
current shell.

 * Add a 99xfree86-common_start script to actually invoke REALSTARTUP
--- cut here ---
exec $REALSTARTUP
--- cut here ---

 * Then, between 90 and 99 administrators are free to add whatever
scripts they want to run in the ssh-agent environment.

Next I'll send an example taking advantage of this.

Hi,

I just tried to introduce a new Xsession.options option
allow-user-xsession-local. I noticed that the grep expressions
^allow-user-xsession fail if one options is a prefix of each other.

Please consider allowing whitespace before and after the option, and
to check for the line's end as well. That would mean a grep expression
like ^[[:space:]]*allow-user-xsession[[:space:]]$.

Greetings

In skolelinux, we would like to run a script when the users are
logging out, to do general cleanup. For this, it would be useful if
the display managers had hooks in Xreset we could use to have our
script executed.

Could you please add /etc/X11/Xreset and /etc/X11/Xreset.d (like the
current /etc/X11/Xsession{.d}), and thus make it possible for the
display managers to share one such file?

If you are interested in adding this feature, I'll provide a patch and
send bugreports against wdm, xdm and kdm to ask them to use this file.

(Not sure why gdm do not include a Xreset file, but it did not appear
on
URL:http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/search_contents.pl?word=Xreset).
I'll file a bug on gdm too just to keep all of them consistent. :)

Package: kdebase
Version: 3.1.2-0woody1

When logging into a system running KDE, I was annoyed that KDE took quite a
long time to come up; the splash screen spent about 8s (on an 1800 MHz
system) on the Initializing Periperhals screen.

Google returned a few hints indicating that /tmp/.ICE_unix should be chowned
by root.root. The KDE bug database has at least one entry
(http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23468) implying this as well.

Applying this fix reduced the startup time from about 10s to 3s. This doesn't
sound like much, but makes quite a difference to me.

I believe kdebase (or a related package) should have startup scripts creating
that directory with the correct permissions.

[Brice Goglin]
About 3 years ago, you reported a bug to the Debian BTS regarding
the missing /etc/X11/Xreset{,.d}. Does this problem still matter
today? If not, I will close this bug in the next weeks.

Yes, it does. We would for example like to kill processes, remove
temp files or similar, and it would be a lot easier if some Xreset.d/
like mechanism is available.

For example, we would like to supply a script in the debian-edu-config
package to clean up commonly left behind processes when a user log
out, and get it enabled without having to edit any file, especially a
file in another package.

Closing this bug since I didn't get any reply from the submitter

Sorry for missing the ping.

temp files or similar, and it would be a lot easier if some Xreset.d/
 like mechanism is available.

For example, we would like to supply a script in the debian-edu-config
package to clean up commonly left behind processes when a user log
out, and get it enabled without having to edit any file, especially a
 file in another package.

Ok, thanks. Reassigning to x11-common since xfree86-common does not
exist anymore.

 Sorry for missing the ping.

Better late than never :)

I was trying to get rid of some of menu entries I don't want, so I
looked into /usr/share/doc/menu/menu.txt.gz to find out how. Under
section 5.2. Specifying a ``no-menu entry'', the document says to
create an empty file with the package name in $HOME/.menu/pakcage name.

I tried this with the xbase-clients and python2.2 packages, and neither
worked.

This functionality works fine when putting empty files into /etc/menu.

Compiz is mostly unusable because :
1) its slow. It takes several seconds to switch from one desktop to another.

rectangles here and there on the screen.

Bug#412599: xterm: boldMode does not work as described

2007-02-26 Thread Jörg Sommer
Package: xterm
Version: 224-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

the manual page of xterm says: Note that xterm has one bold font which
you may set explicitly. It attempts to match a bold font for the other
font selections (font1 through font6). If the normal and bold fonts are
distinct, this resource [boldMode] has no effect.

So I set boldFont and boldMode:
% xrdb -query|grep -E '(XTerm.*ont|bold)'
XTerm.*.boldFont: -misc-fixed-bold-*-*-*-18-*-*-*-*-*-iso10646-1
XTerm.*.font: -misc-fixed-medium-*-*-*-18-*-*-*-*-*-iso10646-1
XTerm.*.boldMode: false

As you can see the font and boldFont entities are distinct, ergo the
boldMode resource should get ignored. But it isn't so. I don't get bold
characters. If I set the boldMode to true, I get ugly characters for
font1 through font6.

Bye, Jörg.

I know it's too late for Beryl to make it into etch, but can we at least ship
an xorg.conf that is frendly to Beryl ? With this patch, only installing
the beryl packages will be enough to get it working with no further setup
(provided that OpenGL is working fine).

Also note that having these extra lines in your xorg.conf is harmless for
non-Beryl users (at least it didn't produce any new warnings or errors in
/var/log/Xorg.log for me), so I propose to add them unconditionaly.

Please, can this make it into etch? This kind of eye-candy is _awesome_
 to attract new users.

I haven't decided if enabling composite by default is a wise move yet. No

While compiz and beryl may be very sexy, I don't want to break or degrade

having to modify xorg.conf. It's not out of the question, but I don't want
to blindly enable options in our default settings for the bling of it.
