Bug#156115: xserver-xorg-core: X server lists scalable fonts with fixed font names, and before real fixed fonts

2007-05-30 Thread Brice Goglin
Hi Massimo,

It looks like this problem with fixed fonts being listed after scalable
fonts with fixed names still apply today. Does it still matter? If so,
we should probably talk to upstream about it instead of keeping it here
for another 5 years :)

Bug#425882: 2:2.0.0-2 looks the same for me + suggestion

2007-05-30 Thread Brice Goglin
D G wrote:
By the way: a bug for 2:2.0.0-2: when you wander onto an inactive window, the
 mouse pointer disappears.

Please do not mix reports since it messes up the contents of the
original bug, while this new bug will end up being forgotten. If this
problem still happens with latest 2:2.0.0-3 that has been uploaded
recently, feel free to file a new bug report.

Anyway, I have downgraded to the driver in unstable, bacause of serious
problems with the one in experimental (eg, ctrl+alt+F1 and you are done :-)
 ).

That's another unrelated bug, right? Feel free to file another report
about this (or add a followup to the existing driver crashes).

I am sure resizing windows is supposed to be fast as of now. Lots of
people have seen it being slow,

remember: with the obsolete -modesetting driver, that is OK. Maybe this one
needs rechecking and see which feature from the obsolete one is missing in
the new one (but be careful, with -modesetting, the colours of the AVI were
 horrible).

There have been lots of changes since the old modesetting driver, I
might be hard to locate where the problem appeared...

What about videos outside of both beryl and compiz ?

OK, but after installing xine from experimental. With the one in unstable,
the image freezes after a few seconds (on metacity, in Beryl it crashes from
 the beginning).

Does the crash report any X-related error in the terminal where you
launched Xine?

 Which video plugin
are you using when playing these videos? For instance, in mplayer, you
can do mplayer -vo x11 foo.avi to use the x11 plugin. Please try at
 least x11 and xv.

Wow! With x11, even on Beryl, mplayer works! But it is the only one that
works in beryl. Totem (with xine) and vlc hang. Idem gmplayer with xv.

Ok, might be yet another XV problem then. Please try with 2:2.0.0-3, it
got some new XV-relate fixes.

 VO: [xv] 320x240 = 320x240 Planar YV12
 [ws] Error in display.
[ws] Error code: 11 ( BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation) )
 [ws] Request code: 141
 [ws] Minor code: 19

And another resource allocation problem...

Does it happen with driver 6.6.3 or 6.6.191 (available from

Here is the gdb backtrace :

Not really useful unfortunately :(

Bug#407036: xserver-xorg: Server crashes each time after hibernate with suspend2

2007-05-30 Thread Bruce MacDonald
Hi Brice, yes the X server still crashes every few times on resume
from suspend to memory with that that xserver-xorg-core package.

I have tried to attach gdb to the X server, in virtual console but
can't get that to work. Killing xscreensaver helps but still doesn't
work, so I can't get a crash report.

 Hi,

About a year ago, you reported a bug to the Debian BTS regarding a crash
of the X server while moving mail between folders in sylpheed. Did you
reproduce this problem recently? With Xorg/Etch?

..yes, no, and no.

 With latest xserver-xorg-core in unstable?

..no, I moved to Sylpheed-2.4.2, which has another set of bugs, the
most serious being allowing phishing etc urls into the status line.

 Thanks,
 Brice

Sometimes when I shut down the X Server (running with vesa driver) and
return to console my screen gets (and stays) filled with trashed
artefacts of my X session. I'm still able to communicate to the shell as
normal, only the video output is scrambled. The output of the X server
seems normal, and doesn't differ from that which I get when the video
output is properly reset. Since it appears at random I suppose this
behaviour results from a race condition.

My laptop has a SMI LynxEM+ chip and is running under Linux 2.4.2 with
VGA text mode selection, booted with option vga=0x0f01 (80x50 display).

As soon as X starts, this information seems to get lost, whenever I
switch back to the text console I get a standard 80x25 display, meaning
that the lower half of the console is inaccessible which makes the text
console unusable. Xfree86 3 worked fine in that respect.

I'll append the parts I think are relevant of XFree86.log.

The X server immediately and reliably crashes when I select either font
'Drift' or 'Tixus' (from xfonts-artwiz 1.4) in a Tcl/Tk client
(Trebuchet, a MUD client). It seems that the rendering in the preview
pane causes this.

I normally use the NVIDIA driver, so I switched to the VESA driver and
the crash still happens.

If I select 'tixus' in Galeon it doesn't crash, so perhaps this is a
missing range-check in the font system?

Hi,

the driver hangs on a Debian/amd64 system with the Silicon Motion
SM720 Lynx3DM (ID 126f:0720) card. I've asked help on the Xorg
mailing list and I got attached patch which fixes the problem:

However the patch has not yet been included upstream, so I'd really like
to see it applied in the Debian package, possibly before etch comes out.

Thanks!

...moving mail between folders within Sylpheed-gtk1-1.0.6 (Sg1), crashes X,
however X and KDM restarts ok, so it's a simple case of just logging in
again.
I see no hint open data isn't lost from open apps, but saved files are ok.

...I'm guessing it may be a font usage problem, as I lost the font that I use
for Sg1, the box is set up the std Debian way to weed out unused fonts.
Does Sg1 report font usage anywhere?

...now, if there was an extremely annoying severity option, it would probably
be more appropriate, as I don't see any lost mail due to this particular bug.

Note probable out-of-dateness of maplink() function body.
Add high-level documentation to XSFBS shell library, intended to reduce

Remove mention of xf86cfg in package description (really closes: #362066).

David Nusinow (60):
Move xsfbs back to its rightful place

Ok, thanks. Since upstream apparently only fixed something for ET6000
since 1.1.0, I guess the bug still appears in driver 1.1.1 and also in
git. So I forwarded the bug upstream at the URL above. Feel free to add

Bug#394687: ICS GenDAC support indeed removed.

2007-05-30 Thread Luc Verhaegen
Hi,

This support was indeed removed when rewriting the Tsengs rather
nasty and illogical ramdac code.

In the year-long run-up to this rewrite, I only was able to get my hands
on a few tseng devices (they are very very very rare these days) and
only got to test ET4000W32p with STG1703 and CH8398, which are both
implemented. Like one other DAC, the ICS GenDAC was indeed not re-added.

I will look into this in a few days time and will write the support for
it, earliest would be thursdaynight or friday, but it will probably have
to be postponed until next week.

This new code will require some testing and thus some involvement from
your side.

Luc Verhaegen.

 Hi guys,

Does this crash of the X server after resume from hibernate with
suspend2 still occurs these days? Did you try with latest
xserver-xorg-core in unstable (2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-5) and your latest
 driver?

yes, I did. It crashed since then once. I.e. far more seldom than
before.

Thanks for contacting and your work!

Best regards,

 upgrading xserver-xorg-video-ati to experimental (6.6.191 or 6.6.192),
 it should fix your MergedFB.

It worked! Great, thanks a lot!

Joachim, is the bug fixed for you with latest xserver-xorg-core in
unstable (2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-5)?

Now if only I didn't have to patch my xserver with the workaround in comment
 #16 from here:

 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7770

Sorry about that. The PCI layer in the server still has lots of bugs,
and it does not look easy to workaround them in a portable way.

Unfortunately, I can’t test this at the moment, as I don’t have an
projector or external monitor around. I will try to remember the next
time I come across one.

Greetings,
Joachim

Bug#151613: Please reconsider splitting out xauth!

2007-05-30 Thread Peter Chubb

# apt-get install xbase-clients
...
The following extra packages will be installed:
  cpp cpp-4.1 gcc-4.1-base libdrm2 libfs6 libgl1-mesa-glx libpng12-0
  libxcursor1 libxfixes3 libxi6 libxinerama1 libxkbfile1 libxmuu1 libxrandr2
  libxss1 libxtrap6 libxtst6 libxv1 libxxf86dga1 libxxf86vm1
...
After unpacking 21.9MB of additional disk space will be used.

And afterwards:
# ldd `which xauth`
linux-gate.so.1 = (0x8000)
libXau.so.6 = /usr/lib/libXau.so.6 (0x2004c000)
libXext.so.6 = /usr/lib/libXext.so.6 (0x2006)
libXmuu.so.1 = /usr/lib/libXmuu.so.1 (0x20098000)

libXdmcp.so.6 = /usr/lib/libXdmcp.so.6 (0x204f8000)
libdl.so.2 = /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x2051)
/lib/ld-linux-ia64.so.2 (0x2000)

Of the extra packages installed to meet xbase-clients dependencies,
the only one necessary for xauth was libxmuu1.

All I want at present is to ssh in to a headless, small disk (1G)
virtual machine and run xterm.

That's likely the problem. xserver-xorg-input-synaptics should
use /usr/share/xserver-xorg/serverminver as the minimum version of
 xserver-xorg-core to depend on.

Ok, I'm now trying to see if I can make some good use of the xsfbs based
on the evdev packaging.

thanks

Packaging xvattr with other Xv tools

2007-05-30 Thread Drew Parsons
Hello,

in striving to get Xv working successfully (given its current issues in
the intel driver), the upstream developers have indicated that a program
called xvattr could be useful for manipulating Xv properties, such as
the pipe used for the video display. This would complement the existing
xvinfo, which simply displays the Xv properties.

xvattr may be found at
http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/groups/dvd/downloads.shtml
It's GPL so packaging should be safe for us.

I would like to place it into our XSF git (I won't agitate to include it
upstream - too much of a headache to argue between GPL vs MIT
licensing).

I think the appropriate place for it would be the same package which
provides xvinfo.

If no one has any objections, I'll insert it there soon, maybe next
week.

Drew

Hi,

while with xserver-xorg-input-synaptics_0.14.6-1 I have no problem, with
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics_0.14.7~git20070517-1 the module 'synaptics'
isn't loaded; here my Xorg.0.log:

(II) LoadModule: synaptics
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input/synaptics_drv.so
(II) Module synaptics: vendor=X.Org Foundation
compiled for 4.3.99.902, module version = 1.0.0
Module class: X.Org XInput Driver
ABI class: X.Org XInput driver, version 0.7
(EE) module ABI minor version (7) is newer than the server's version (6)
(II) UnloadModule: synaptics
(II) Unloading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input/synaptics_drv.so
(EE) Failed to load module synaptics (module requirement mismatch, 0)

I know my xserver-xorg-core isn't the last one, but I had to hold it
because of a problem with fglrx-driver package...

Thanks,
Andrea
