Bug#441181: xserver-xorg-video-ati: does not detect monitor

The screen is detected but wrong mode is selected. Maybe it is a dexconf bug that it sets up the xorg.conf incorrectly. However, selecting a mode larger than the panel size seems wrong even if the frequncies are specified incorrectly. 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 SE] (rev 01) xserver -xorg-video-ati 1:6.6.3-2 is very old, lots of changes were made since then, but no new stable version has been released. So there are 2 major release candidates that you could try: * 1:6.6.193-1 is the natural successor of 1:6.6.3-2 with several fixes, it is available from http://people.debian.org/~bgoglin/ati-for-sid/ * Then the driver got a large rework, especially in the area regarding monitor/mode detection, with randr-1.2 support. So 1:6.7.192-1 is available for unstable from http://snapshot.debian.net/archive/2007/08/05/debian/pool/main/x/xserver-xorg-video-ati/ Please try with any of these versions. I tried with a Radeon 9250. This time dexconf got the monitor right, it did not include bogus refresh rates and limited the resolution to 1280x1024 by explicitly naming some resolutions in a display subsection. After removing this subsection the problem was the same: a mode larger than the physical resolution was chosen. I tried installing the new driver (looks like only 1:6.7.192-1 is available by now) and this time only the ddc modes were used. However, the log messages do not look too reassuring. The built in modes are rejected because of bad clock/interlace/doublescan, nothing is printed about screen physical resolution. What seems to be the problem? The monitor's preferred mode is 1280 by 1024 and the physical size is according to the edid from the monitor: Detects and throws away part of the information would be more precise. It gets the sync rates and calculates a mode that fits into these but is larger than physical size. It sort of works with 6.7.192 (in this setup it does not choose modes larger than 1280x1024, probably just accidentally) but it crashes on Radeon 9200, at least in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/139210 Thanks Michal -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#442210: xorg-server: [debconf_rewrite] Debconf templates and debian/control review
Package: xorg-server Version: N/A Severity: normal Tags: patch Dear Debian maintainer, On Monday, August 27, 2007, I notified you of the beginning of a review process concerning debconf templates for xorg-server. The debian-l10n-english contributors have now reviewed these templates, and the proposed changes are attached to this bug report. Please review the suggested changes are suggested, and if you have any objections, let me know in the next 3 days. Please try to avoid uploading xorg-server with these changes right now. The second phase of this process will begin on Monday, September 17, 2007, when I will coordinate updates to translations of debconf templates. The existing translators will be notified of the changes: they will receive an updated PO file for their language. Simultaneously, a general call for new translations will be sent to the debian-i18n mailing list. Both these calls for translations will request updates to be sent as individual bug reports. That will probably trigger a lot of bug reports against your package, but these should be easier to deal with. The call for translation updates and new translations will run until about Monday, October 08, 2007. Please avoid uploading a package with fixed or changed debconf templates and/or translation updates in the meantime. Of course, other changes are safe. Please note that this is an approximative delay, which depends on my own availability to process this work and is influenced by the fact that I simultaneously work on many packages. Around DAY25, I will contact you again and will send a final patch summarizing all the updates (changes to debconf templates, updates to debconf translations and new debconf translations). Again, thanks for your attention and cooperation. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.22-2-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash --- xorg-server.old/debian/xprint-common.templates 2007-08-27 15:15:18.104056699 +0200 +++ xorg-server/debian/xprint-common.templates 2007-09-14 07:38:44.617667575 +0200 @@ -1,12 +1,21 @@ +# These templates have been reviewed by the debian-l10n-english +# team +# +# If modifications/additions/rewording are needed, please ask +# [EMAIL PROTECTED] for advice. +# +# Even minor modifications require translation updates and such +# changes should be coordinated with translators and reviewers. + Template: xprint-common/default_printer_resolution Type: string Default: 600 -_Description: Default printer resolution - By default Xprint assumes a printer resolution of 600dpi. Bug#435114: Dynamic Clock scaling disabled
dynamic clock scaling was disabled. i just gave an example to what causes a similar visual effect. I'm not sure it's dynamic clock because i always had it disabled. only, one time when i enabled it, i saw that it gave me a similar visual effect like the bug I'm describing. is there a way to send a command to the X to disable it after it was initialized ? just to check if it helps remove the visual distortion ? where can i find the set of command that get fired up when the screen dip-switch senses an opening of the laptop's screen ? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. preseeding xserver resolution (win32-loader)
Hi, I've been suggested that it would be a good idea to detect the screen resolution in win32-loader and preseed that to the debconf templates in the xserver-xorg package. I think this is unnecessary and it's better to leave the decision entirely to xserver-xorg scripts. Does someone think otherwise ? -- Robert Millan GPLv2 I know my rights; I want my phone call! Only +// the first 2 are needed for native Tibetan text; the remainder are +// filled with special symbols and letters for transliterating foreign +// text. Further, CNS leaves the level of support of keyboards 2-5 as an +// option to the implementor (despite the fact that #2 is absolutely +// essential...). Windows Vista maps them as follows: +// +// 1. Unshifted +// 2. m-key-prefixed +// 3. Shift-modified +// 4. Ctrl+Alt+Shift-modified +// 5. M-key-prefixed +// +// I roughly copy the Windows Vista mapping, which was intended by the +// designer of the keyboard, with the following exceptions: +// +// The fifth keyboard is almost empty and contains only precomposed forms +// of subjoined letter characters whose use is strongly discouraged, and +// is not implemented at all in this XKB map. The fourth is implemented, +// but is accessed by an m-prefix (or M-prefix, for convenience) +// followed by a Shift-modified key. This avoids stealing the Ctrl and Alt +// keys, which belong to applications on *nix and not to the keyboard or +// input method. Aside from enterring rare special symbols and +// foreign-word-transliteration letters, these differences should not +// affect users. +// +// Implementation notes: +// +// A latching ISO Level3 shift is used for the m-prefix modifier. In +// principle moving it to other keys (e.g. AltGr) would be possible +// according to user preference, but this is not practical for typing +// Tibetan, since the subjoined consonants, of which Tibetan has 0-2 per +// syllable, are accessed via this mechanism. +// +// One annoyance is that the latching Level3 shift fails to work if the +// previous key is not yet released when m is pressed (the key release +// event kills the latch). I consider this a bug in X and don't know an +// easy way to work around it. Complain to the maintainers if it bothers +// you and maybe they'll find a fix. I have exactly the same problem on etch. My logs are identical, so I do not resend them here. I don't understand why you reopen this, while the 412720 bug log seems to make it pretty clear that this is fixed in a later version. Closing. Etch is broken, the current stable release. Your message dated Fri, 14 Sep 2007 23:08:54 +0200 with message-id [EMAIL PROTECTED] and subject line fixed in experimental has caused the attached Bug report to be marked as done. This means that you claim that the problem has been dealt with. If this is not the case it is now your responsibility to reopen the Bug report if necessary, and/or fix the problem forthwith. In /usr/X11R6/bin/startx I found # display must be the FIRST server argument so I tried startx /usr/X11R6/bin/xterm -- /usr/X11R6/bin/Xnest :1 -geometry 640x480 which worked. Your message dated Fri, 14 Sep 2007 21:17:40 + with message-id [EMAIL PROTECTED] and subject line Bug#410060: fixed in xkeyboard-config 1.0~cvs.20070914-1 has caused the attached Bug report to be marked as done. (NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what I am talking about this indicates a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact me immediately.) Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) ---BeginMessage--- Package: xkb-data Version: 0.9-4 Severity: normal I'm having a strange problem concerning my keyboard setup. Let me describe: I have fvwm-crystal installed with 4 virtual desktops and setup a mapping by ALT+CTRL+1 do move the active window onto the virtual desktop 1 (of course, pressing ALT+CTRL+4 moves the window to desktop 4). If I setup my xkb config like this: $ setxkbmap -v Trying to build keymap using the following components: keycodes: xfree86+aliases(qwerty) types: complete compat: complete symbols:pc(pc105)+us geometry: pc(pc105) it works as expected. But as I like to have Caps_Lock as an additional CTRL Key, I run $ setxkbmap -layout us -option ctrl:nocaps $ setxkbmap -v Trying to build keymap using the following components: keycodes: xfree86+aliases(qwerty) types: complete compat: complete symbols:pc(pc105)+us+ctrl(nocaps) geometry: pc(pc105) and now Caps_Lock behaves like CTRL. I can move my window to every desktop *except* to desktop 1. That means pressing the keys Caps_Lock+ALT+1 does nothing. But pressing CTRL+ALT+1 behaves as it should. Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) ---BeginMessage--- Subject: xkb-data: virtual keys missing from evdev keycodes, breaks modifiers Package: xkb-data Version: 0.9-4 Severity: normal *** Please type your report below this line *** Upon switching from kbd to evdev driver, and thus from xorg to evdev keycode mappings, my window manager bindings stopped working. I eventually traced this down to a weird part of the keycode files. In keycodes/xfree86, there are mappings for seven keys including META to codes that never occur. I added similar lines to evdev: // Fake keycodes for virtual keys MDSW = 241; LVL3 = 242; ALT = 243; META = 244; SUPR = 245; HYPR = 246; And now my bindings do work. In linux/input.h keycode 240 is called unknown and the range 241-255 are not defined. xmodmap output with this change: xmodmap: up to 3 keys per modifier, (keycodes in parentheses): shift Shift_L (0x32), Shift_R (0x3e) lockCaps_Lock (0x42) control Control_L (0x25), Control_R (0x69) mod1Alt_L (0x40), Alt_L (0xf3), Meta_L (0xf4) mod2Num_Lock (0x4d) mod3 mod4Super_L (0xf5), Hyper_L (0xf6) mod5ISO_Level3_Shift (0x6c), Mode_switch (0xf1), ISO_Level3_Shift (0xf2) xmodmap output witout it: xmodmap: up to 2 keys per modifier, (keycodes in parentheses): shift Shift_L (0x32), Shift_R (0x3e) lockCaps_Lock (0x42) control Control_L (0x25), Control_R (0x69) mod1Alt_L (0x40) mod2Num_Lock (0x4d) mod3 mod4 mod5ISO_Level3_Shift (0x6c) The left logo key is mapped to Super_L and mod4, but without the fake keys that fails somehow. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.22 (SMP w/2 CPU cores; PREEMPT) Locale: LANG=sv_SE.ISO-8859-15, LC_CTYPE=sv_SE.ISO-8859-15 (charmap=ISO-8859-15) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash -- no debconf information ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- Source: xkeyboard-config Source-Version: 1.0~cvs.20070914-1 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of xkeyboard-config, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: xkb-data_1.0~cvs.20070914-1_all.deb to pool/main/x/xkeyboard-config/xkb-data_1.0~cvs.20070914-1_all.deb xkeyboard-config_1.0~cvs.20070914-1.dsc to pool/main/x/xkeyboard-config/xkeyboard-config_1.0~cvs.20070914-1.dsc xkeyboard-config_1.0~cvs.20070914-1.tar.gz to pool/main/x/xkeyboard-config/xkeyboard-config_1.0~cvs.20070914-1.tar.gz A summary of the changes between this version and the previous one is attached. To make matters worse, the hidden layouts are the ones that should be used in public instititions (ones that generate correct diactics - s and t with comma below) according to Romanian law. Also note that the cedilla variants are the ones that will be deprecated sooner or later although the std layout is one of those. A lengthier discussion was started on the corresponding ubuntu bug, with references to the Romanian law, and the standard, images with the layout ... https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xkeyboard-config/+bug/108057 Note that the choice issue they discuss is not implemented in anyway here yet, although the default layout for Lenny should be the comma variant since having correct diacritics for Romanian is an internal release goal of the Romanian L10N team: http://wiki.debian.org/L10N/Romanian/Lenny (in Romanian; the first point is the one dealing with the issue of using correct diacritics). Attached is a patch I made for the unstable version of the package and I tested on the etch version. Bug#180712: marked as done (xbase-clients: [xmag] manpage out of date with respect to 'cut' function and bitmap program)
Your message dated Fri, 14 Sep 2007 22:17:07 + with message-id [EMAIL PROTECTED] and subject line Bug#180712: fixed in x11-apps 7.3+1 has caused the attached Bug report to be marked as done. This means that you claim that the problem has been dealt with. If this is not the case it is now your responsibility to reopen the Bug report if necessary, and/or fix the problem forthwith. (NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what I am talking about this indicates a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact me immediately.) Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) ---BeginMessage--- Package: xbase-clients Version: 4.1.0-16 Severity: normal hi I would like to write a magnification to a file, using xmag I have read the man page. It says: Cut puts the mag? nification image into the primary selection. Paste copies the primary selection buffer into xmag. Note that you can cut and paste between xmag and the bitmap program. Resiz? ing xmag resizes the magnification area. xmag preserves the colormap, visual, and window depth of the source. these IMHO are not true anymore: there is no 'cut' button: the button is called 'select' I cannot paste from 'bitmap', but I can paste from xpaint bye and thanks a. -- System Information Debian Release: 3.0 Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux tonelli 2.4.19-k7 #1 Sun Oct 6 20:29:56 EST 2002 i686 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C Versions of packages xbase-clients depends on: ii cpp 2:2.95.4-14 The GNU C preprocessor. ii debconf 1.0.32 Debian configuration management sy ii libc62.2.5-11.2 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libdps1 4.1.0-16Display PostScript (DPS) client li ii libfreetype6 2.0.9-1 FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libncurses5 5.2.20020112a-7 Shared libraries for terminal hand ii libxaw7 4.1.0-16X Athena widget set library ii xlibmesa34.1.0-16XFree86 version of Mesa 3D graphic ii xlibmesa3 [libgl1] 4.1.0-16XFree86 version of Mesa 3D graphic ii xlibs4.1.0-16X Window System client libraries -- Andrea Mennucc E' un mondo difficile. There doesn't seem to be anything in place to delete these orphaned files, so they perhaps need a similar mechanism to $removelist to tidy them up at next restart. Bug#184092: marked as done ([xbase-clients] Review of xbase-clients menu entries)
Your message dated Sat, 15 Sep 2007 02:10:57 +0200 with message-id [EMAIL PROTECTED] and subject line Bug#184092: [xbase-clients] Review of xbase-clients menu entries has caused the attached Bug report to be marked as done. Please contact me immediately.) Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) ---BeginMessage--- Package: xbase-clients Version: 4.2.1-6 Severity: wishlist Hello Branden, In an attempt to improve menus in Debian, I have made a review of the menu entries provided by xbase-client. Here the result: Bitmap\ Editres\ Oclock\ Xbiff\ Xcalc\ Xclipboard\ Xclock (analog)\ Xclock (digital)\ Xcutsel\ Xeyes\ Xfontsel\ Xedit\ Xev\ Xkill\ Xload\ Xmag\ Xman\ Xrefresh\ Xvidtune\ OK, no problem, that works and is basically useful. Beforelight\ I have never been able to make beforelight do something, so I cannot say if this entry is legitimate. beforelight manpage and /etc/X11/app-defaults/Beforelight are not specially explicit either. Xconsole\ I get window stating Couldn't open console so I am not sure it serve a purpose. Xditview\ I have never been able to do anything with it outside displaying a blank screen. Xlogo\ Well this work, but is not very useful even as a toy. Xsetroot\ It works but this not tremendously useful. We usually set the root window at log in time and having a menu entry that does not allows to choose another is not useful. X Window Snapshot\ It works but this is not tremendously useful either, since we cannot save the snapshot anywhere. The problem with that two last entries is that theirs titles imply you will be able to perform something (cange the toot wondow/take a snapshot) when in fact you cannot.
