Please check the backtrace at the end of your log in all these cases.
They should be similar to
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=463222#29

I am merging this bug with the other ones since it is probably the same
issue.

Some possibly-related fixes were applied to the upstream Xserver git
recently. It would be nice if somebody could try reproducing this bug there.

Great, thank you.
I have forwarded the bug in the upstream bugzilla at the URL above. Feel
free to add comments if you think it could help.

Yes, it might be a good idea to try the latest git of the driver (master
branch). We'll see if the upstream devs want it.

Also, it would be nice to post your xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log (when
vga=871 is removed), they'll probably need it. Posting the log *before*
the crash would be ok since we already provided a backtrace of the
crash. Just make sure the same crash occurs after this log :) Also, make
sure you do that after a hard reboot (shutdown completely and start
again) so that you don't have bad warnings such as"Existing errors found
in hardware state" in the log.

OK, as requested, I removed the vga=871 from the kernel command line and
got the following:

Bug#468278: xserver-xorg-core: XkbGeometry "thinkpad(us)" locks up machine

2008-02-27 Thread Chung-chieh Shan
Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 2:1.4.1~git20080131-1
Severity: important

Hello,

If I put

Option "XkbGeometry" "thinkpad(us)"

instead of

Option "XkbGeometry" "pc(pc104)"

in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and start X (even just by typing "X" at the
console), then I can reliably crash X by either quitting X (for example
by hitting Ctrl-Alt-Backspace) or changing xkb settings (for example by
running "setxkbmap -option"). The bottom half or so of my screen then
shows vertical stripes on black, and my system locks up (but the magic
SysRq key still works). Some other actions trigger this crash as well,
such as opening some documents in OpenOffice.

Thanks,
Ken

You're contributing to a solution. I just did not have the time to check
the issue. If you want, you can report the bug directly to upstream
(http://bugs.freedesktop.org/ - xkeyboard-config component).

Bug#461489: Documentation is nearly useless here

2008-02-27 Thread Ray Dillinger
I've spent several days reading man pages, configuration directory
README's, configuration files, ISO standards to figure out what the
README's were saying, etc

And aside from there being no useful mention whatsoever of laptop
function keys, as far as I can tell keyboard configuration has become
an arcane, confusing, and poorly documented mess. It's spread over
dozens of directories and hundreds of files. I get that it's a
complicated problem, but this is nuts. There doesn't even seem to
be any way to get X to tell me what keyboard configuration files it's
actually using. I can't even begin to tell what file I ought to
try modifying to fix my problem.

Documentation that says what steps are applied to keyboard input, in
what order, and what files control the transformations involved in
those steps, and how, is very very necessary here, and I don't have
the ability to write it. If it existed I might have the ability to
fix this damn bug, but I haven't been able to assimilate the myriad
oblique and subtle clues yet to figure out where the one or two lines
I probably need to change might be found.

Surely it can't be necessary to learn all of X11R6 to figure out where
to go to fix a keyboard bug??

I have heard in email from several people who say they're having the
exact same problem and want to know if I've found a solution yet. I
have not.

And the silence from Debian-bugs is very very depressing. Is anybody
out there? Does anybody even have any questions about my system or
configuration that I could answer just to give me the illusion that
I'm contributing to a solution?

Bear

Strange. you might try tweaking it slightly, maybe 87 Hz, etc.

Indeed, the server started with the "PreferredMode" commented out.
However,

changing the mode to this mode hang the computer.

What other modeline do you mean? I copied this one from earlier xorg,
where it

 was autodetected.

try cvt:

$ cvt 1400 1050 60
# 1400x1050 59.98 Hz (CVT 1.47M3) hsync: 65.32 kHz; pclk: 121.75 MHz

$ cvt 1400 1050 75
# 1400x1050 74.87 Hz (CVT 1.47M3) hsync: 82.28 kHz; pclk: 156.00 MHz
Modeline "1400x1050_75.00" 156.00 1400 1504 1648 1896 1050 1053

OK. So I tried this:

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Generic Monitor"
Option "DPMS"
HorizSync 30-95
VertRefresh 50-160
Modeline"1400x1050" 184.00 1400 1464 1656 1960 1050
1051 1054 1100 +hsync +vsync

# 1400x1050 84.96 Hz (CVT 1.47M3) hsync: 93.88 kHz; pclk: 179.50 MHz
Modeline "1400x1050_85.00" 179.50 1400 1512 1656 1912 1050 1053 1057
1105 -hsync +vsync

# 1400x1050 74.87 Hz (CVT 1.47M3) hsync: 82.28 kHz; pclk: 156.00 MHz
Modeline "1400x1050_75.00" 156.00 1400 1504 1648 1896 1050 1053 1057
1099 -hsync +vsync

# 1400x1050 59.98 Hz (CVT 1.47M3) hsync: 65.32 kHz; pclk: 121.75 MHz
Modeline "1400x1050_60.00" 121.75 1400 1488 1632 1864 1050 1053 1057
1089 -hsync +vsync

Option "PreferredMode" "1400x1050"
EndSection

The 60 an 75 Hz variants work under 6.8.0, the 85 Hz doesn't.

Probably not, unless someone feels like updating the discover database. I
definitely don't want to switch any current ati driver users over to
radeonhd for etch and a half. If you want to volunteer to update the
discover and discover1-data packages for the new pci id's, feel free.

Bug#465939: Crashes often when changing virtual desktop in KDE with translucencies

2008-02-27 Thread David
After a lot of days without this problem, it happened again today. You can
mark the bug as found in the current version in sid :-)

It happens more often when I have a programme of scientific computation
running in background. This programme does not consume much RAM (0.1 %) but
consumes a lot of CPU (90 % at least, usually 99.7 %).

Regarding gdb, I am afraid I cannot login from another computer. I tried
Ctrl + Alt + F1 and run gdb as root, but gdb seems to freeze (goes to a new
line and stays there forever and ever).

Thank you.

Bug#463076: xserver-xorg-video-ati: machine freezes when X is stopped or second X started

2008-02-27 Thread Roger Leigh
Hi folks,

Just another datapoint for this bug. My Mac Mini has a

:00:10.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV280
[Radeon 9200] (rev 01) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

and I was also bitten by this bug. My system locked hard if I tried to
kill X or shutdown the system (which causes kdm to stop X). It also
locked if I tried to switch to a VT with C-A-Fn.

Further investigation showed that this worked perfectly if I booted the
system with "video=radeonfb:[EMAIL PROTECTED]" on the command-line. I can
now switch VTs at will, as well as start and stop X, shut down the
system, etc. without problems.

However, booting with "video=ofonly" results in all the problems
mentioned above.

Is this the same for the other people suffering from this bug?

It might be an issue with the OF framebuffer, or the attempt to restore
the framebuffer when X terminates or VT switches. IME, ofonly doesn't
come back when you end X, but previously you just got a black screen
rather than a lockup.

Regards,
Roger

Hi Philip,

this issue with EXA on 855 should have been fixed in recent versions,
as far as I know. Can you please test with the intel driver version
2.2.1 (available in unstable) and report the result? Make sure you use
the default EXA AccelMethod, and include the corresponding X log in your
reply.

Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.0.0-1
Severity: normal

This seems very similar to bug #424952, but manifests differently.

I have a Dell Dimension with an i845 Rev 1 graphics. I've been happily using it
in 1280x1024 mode for a couple of years. I upgraded today to the new intel
driver and and X started using modes with a 4:3 aspect ratio. If I tried to
force 1280x1024, I would get "no usable screen". Downgrading to the i810
(1.7.2-4) fixed the problem.

If there's more data you need, let me know.

Severity: wishlist

The new xserver-xorg-video-intel driver has never worked properly for
me; there are several showstoppers (which I've been dutifully filing
into xorg's bugzilla), and so I've been using a kind of backport of
version 1.7.2-4 of the i810 driver. It looks from the BTS like I'm not
the only one having problems with the new driver, and so it seems to me
that it would be nice to provide a package for the old driver until the
new one gets more stable.
  Thanks.

can you try suspend again with the intel driver version 2.2.1 (available
in unstable) and a newer kernel (e.g. 2.6.24), and report the results?
There have been some fixes related to suspend/resume recently.

This is a bug in certain radeons where you have to enable crtc1 before
crtc0 or you get a blank screen. I'll see if I can dig up some more
info on which ones are affect and maybe I can narrow the range.

Hi Peter,

in xorg.conf (or don't use dimensions bigger than 2048), and report the

Bug#458099: xserver-xorg-video-intel: Please consider packaging old i810 driver again

2008-02-27 Thread Andrew Moise
This is less of an issue for me now, since upstream has started
fixing my bugs instead of just claiming my hardware is broken or
assigning them all to Keith Packard :-). I'm now using the new intel
driver (locally compiled from a git snapshot with some recent fixes)
and it's working acceptably for me, so AFAIC this bug can be closed.
  Thanks!

I've not actually installed it, but aptitude tells me that compiz-plugins
still depends on gconf2. I can unselect compiz-plugins, but its description
still claims "This package contains the standard plugins that come with
compiz. Compiz without these plugins is not very useful."...

It's also a pity that the compiz meta package is so extremely
gnome-centered. Wouldn't it be better to support the different desktop
environments on a more equal footing?

Cheers,
FJP

When starting compiz I get:

/usr/bin/compiz: 364: nvidia-settings: not found
[: 364: 65536: unexpected operator

... and indeed, /usr/bin/compiz in check_nvidia_memory() blindly uses
whatever it returned without checking for errors.

Since there's no -e, this just spews out ugly error messages, but since
that's simple to fix...

Some windows do not change their frames to indicate that they are
active when I switch to them with Alt-TAB or the mouse. They respond
normally to input, so it's only the visual indication that is
missing. The frame remains grey, as in the inactive state.

Other windows render correctly (blue frame when active). The errors
occur seemingly at random, for instance right now one Konqueror and
one Konsole window are showing the bug, but if I open new Konsole
windows, they look right.

compiz override disparity

2008-02-27 Thread Debian Installer
There are disparities between your recently accepted upload and the
override file for the following file(s):

libdecoration0-dev_0.6.3~git20080115.0ea58487-1_amd64.deb: package says section
is libdevel, override says x11.

Either the package or the override file is incorrect. If you think
the override is correct and the package wrong please fix the package
so that this disparity is fixed in the next upload. If you feel the
override is incorrect then please reply to this mail and explain why.

[NB: this is an automatically generated mail; if you replied to one
like it before and have not received a response yet, please ignore
this mail. Your reply needs to be processed by a human and will be in
due course, but until then the installer will send these automated
mails; sorry.]
