Bug#494441: xserver-xorg-video-intel: X server crashes with "lockup" on G45 (X4500HD) chipset
> By the way does the version in sid work? (I tried to backport the > necessary patches for non-HDMI output from 2.4, but may have missed some > and have no G4x hardware to test.) I've tried downgrading back to the version in sid, but I'm no longer able to get it to work at all with sid's driver. With 2%3a2.3.2-2+lenny2_i386 I've managed to completely lock up the whole machine a few times. Other times, it just fails to start. See the log following. Same with 2:2.3.2-2, so the working one must have been that version before in unstable. But afaik it isn't available anymore on ftp.debian.org. Adding Modeline "1440x900" 106.47 1440 1520 1672 1904 900 901 904 932 -HSync +Vsync solved it. I don't know why. Didn't need the modeline since stopped using 915resolution, more than 1 year ago. There was a known bug (infinite loop) related to that in the server code that's embedded in the driver, and I forgot to check that the fix was in the etchnhalf package. I supposed it could be fixed for the next point release if necessary, though I don't know if I'll have the time. Bug#494610: Server hangs on startup when using a custom mode
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel Version: 2.2.1-1~etchnhalf2 Other possibly relevant package versions: xserver-xorg-core 2:1.1.1-21etch5 linux-image-2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-686 2.6.24-6~etchnhalf.4 Video chipset: Intel G33 When etchnhalf was released, I switched from testing's X server (xserver-xorg-video-intel and xserver-xorg-core) to etchnhalf. My /etc/X11/xorg.conf contained, among others, the following lines in the Monitor section: Modeline "1600x1200" 185.75 1600 1664 1856 2160 1200 1201 1204 1241 Option "PreferredMode" "1600x1200" With testing's packages, there was no problem, and I had a 1600x1200, 69 Hz mode. With etchnhalf, the server hangs on startup: the screen becomes blank, I cannot switch to a text console with Ctrl-Alt-Fn, and Ctrl-Alt-Backspace does not do anything visible. However, Ctrl-Alt-Suppr works, and it seems to be the only thing I can do. Bug#483989: xserver-xorg-video-savage: system freeze while starting X
You listed 5 reverted commits above. Did you try to narrow down which ones you need to revert? Or are they all broken by the 02_temporary_revert_pciaccess.diff? You can also try to start the server with "sudo strace Xorg" from another machine, or "sudo gdb Xorg". Sometimes the debugging makes the execution slow enough that you will get something in the log. If you try gdb, setting breakpoints around/inside SavageMapMem might be an idea as well, to find where it blows up. And does the standard tricks of Option "BusType" "PCI" and Option "DRI" "off" make any change? Cheers, Tormod -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? I'd fully agree here with the XAA workaround in place. It's a little bit strange to mark these things only as important otherwise - what would be grave then? Anyway, it's your call. Bug#484087: Can't install driver 2.4.0
Brice Goglin wrote: > It doesn't apply on top of 2.3.2 from what I see. And touching dsparb is > far away from our knowledge, we'll have to talk to upstream about this. I have been running with framebuffer compression off for a week now, and that seems to solve the problem. If the intel driver can't be patched to solve this with the bugfix from 2.4.0, is it possible to change the X.org installation/configuration in such a way that when the intel driver is used, framebuffer compression is turned off by default? At least that would provide a usable system out of the box, instead of a frequently crashing system. -- Sander -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Please apply to the Debian package. As this seems to affect other packages (xfce4-xkb-plugin) maybe this bug should be 'serious'? Anyway, please fix this for lenny. As said before, this will also fix #483725 and #486891 (which should probably just be merged with this one). Regards, Andrei -- If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough.
