Bug#503447: xserver-xorg-video-sis: locks up, sometimes fails to clear areas of screen being over-written

2008-10-26 Thread Arthur Marsh
Package: xserver-xorg-video-sis
Version: 1:0.10.0-1
Severity: important

I have installed Debian on an HP Pavilion with the following built-in
graphics controller:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS]
661/741/760 PCI/AGP or 662/761Gx PCIE VGA Display Adapter (prog-if 00
[VGA controller])
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 2a06
Flags: 66MHz, medium devsel, IRQ 5
BIST result: 00
Memory at e000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=128M]
Memory at ed00 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=128K]
I/O ports at a000 [size=128]
Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 2
Capabilities: [50] AGP version 3.0
Kernel modules: sisfb

After some time at the kdm login prompt, the screen locks up - the mouse
will move the cursor but no input does anything.

Also, sometimes new menus or konsole sessions will overwrite the
background without first clearing the background.

Hi Peter,

I suspect removing the call to FlushButtons in
src/vmmouse.c:VMMouseDeviceControl would fix this. Care to try that?

Cheers,

Bug#503470: xserver-xorg: hitting any keyboard key freezes mouse (until ~1sec after key is released)

2008-10-26 Thread Marc Poulhiès

Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.3+18
Severity: important

Using the keyboard freezes the mouse. It can move again after ~1sec
after the last key is released.
Pressing the ALT key gives another behavior: mouse cursor is frozen and
all Z movements are handled as wheel events ?!

Just installed nvidia-glx to test the closed source driver.
It works - so maybe really an issue in nv.

I've tested here as it happens I have a FX5200 like yours:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX
  5200] (rev a1)

and found no problem with nv starting X. I used your bug's attached
xorg.conf instead mine to avoid differences other than system.
This is an amd64 box, not i386, so maybe arch-depending:

Author: Ian Romanick [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Sun Sep 28 20:31:46 2008 -0700

Use 3Dnow! x86-64 routines only on processors that support 3Dnow!

Added an x86-64 CPUID function and use it to detect 3Dnow! If 3Dnow!
is available, use _mesa_3dnow_transform_points4_3d_no_rot,
_mesa_3dnow_transform_points4_perspective,
_mesa_3dnow_transform_points4_2d_no_rot, and
_mesa_3dnow_transform_points4_2d.

This fixes long standing bug #8724.

Can you give me advice ?

I admit if it comprises compiling the package, I'd prefer testing
a package compiled by you. I'm not sure how much time I'll have over
the week, so testing will be easier to do than compiling.

But if it helps I can give it a try (provided you tell me how to do it)

Bug#503541: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau: Xserver fails to start (wrong DRM version)

2008-10-26 Thread Chris Lamb
Massis Sirapian wrote:

Having updated drm modules today, I've discovered that xserver-nouveau is
now out-dated (drm modules of 20081015).

That's right - there were some issues with drm-snapshot which needed to
fixed first before xserver-nouveau could really be uploaded.

May you update the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau package to match the
 drm-modules?

Sure. I've just uploaded drm-snapshot and once I see that built on a few
architectures I'll upload another nouveau snapshot.

drm/i915: fix ioremap of a user address for non-root (CVE-2008-3831)

Olaf Kirch noticed that the i915_set_status_page() function of the i915
kernel driver calls ioremap with an address offset that is supplied by
userspace via ioctl. The function zeroes the mapped memory via memset
and tells the hardware about the address. Turns out that access to that
ioctl is not restricted to root so users could probably exploit that to
do nasty things. We haven't tried to write actual exploit code though.

It only affects the Intel G33 series and newer.

Aside, why don't you upload new snapshots for libdrm2 and nouveau?

Thanks,

Package: libdrm2
Version: 2.3.1-2

The acronym DRM shown in the package description for libdrm2 could use
some clarification so that the novice and intermediate users know that
it stands for Direct Rendering Manager and is related to OpenGL.

apt-cache search libdrm2 gives a line in which the context of DRM is
unclear:

libdrm2 - Userspace interface to kernel DRM services -- runtime
libdrm2-dbg - Userspace interface to kernel DRM \
services -- debugging symbols

The package description is excellent:

This library implements the userspace interface to the
kernel DRM services. DRM stands for Direct Rendering
Manager, which is the kernelspace portion of the
Direct Rendering Infrastructure (DRI). The DRI is
currently used on Linux to provide hardware-accelerated
OpenGL drivers.

http://packages.debian.org/sid/libdrm2

What can be borrowed from the description and put into the short
description that apt-cache search displays something associated with
rendering? (rather than restriction)
