Bug#440185: xserver-xorg: Problem with black screen after installing Nvidia 3D driver
Package: xserver-xorg Version: 1:7.3+18 Followup-For: Bug #440185 Hello, I had this problem in Etch, and continue to have a similar problemn in Lenny. I installed the nvidia drivers using the method described in the Debian wiki (wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers) using the module assistant method described. After following the procedure and restarting X, I get a black screen (like an out of range monitor frequency. No curser, nothing evident on the screen, but still receiving some kind of signal, since the monitor doesn't report no signal). In the past I would solve this by doing dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and then restarting the system. Now I do something similar, with Xorg -configure. This mostly solves the problem, although at least one 3D game (ppracer) starts with a similar black screen, while most others work OK. My hardware is a foxconn Nvidia 7600GT PCIx card on a MSI K8NGM2-FID motherboard with integrated Geforce 6150 graphics disabled. The monitor is an Acer AL2051W, connected by DVI. Keyboard and mouse are generic USB types. Not to complain, but more to point out a finding, this doesn't happen in other recent Linux distros (Ubuntu 8.1, Fedora 10, OpenSuse 11, PCLOS, etc.), so i suspect it is something in the way Xorg is implemented in Debian. Bug#510768: xserver-xorg: Please support setting Asturian variant when Asturian was chosen in the installer
On Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 19:55:45 +0100, Christian Perrier wrote: The atatched patch provides supprot for setting up the Asturian variant of the Spanish keymap when users did choose the Asturian language when installing Debian, as well as a Spanish keymap. This is not needed for lenny as Asturian will only (maybe) supported in squeeze. We'll change the way the keymap is setup for squeeze, so this setting can be shared between console and X. I'm not yet sure how the transition will work, but I think the responsibility for setting up the X keymap will move away from xserver-xorg's postinst. I guess we might start depending on console-setup, and let it do the work for us. Cheers, Julien -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-x-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#498189: xfonts-scalable: unnecesary use of fmt breaks when not on a tty
Package: xfonts-scalable Version: 1:1.0.0-6 Followup-For: Bug #498189 The postinst for this seems to contain a _load_ of code that seems to duplicate various bits of functionallity that are part of the packaging system. If they're needed (which I doubt) they point to bugs in dpkg. Part of this seems to be the assumption that you need to wrap messages for the user. The error being thrown by fmt would seem to be due to the fact that it's being run behind a debconf backend (noninteractive in my vase) that doesn't define a terminal width. I'd suggest that this postinst (and the others that contain all the same baggage) need a code review, and that the same result could be better achieved by use of a few debconf calls, with the added bonus that the warning messages could then be templates and so would get translated. -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0 APT prefers testing APT policy: (501, 'testing'), (50, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-1-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_GB.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages xfonts-scalable depends on: ii xfonts-utils 1:7.4+1X Window System font utility progr xfonts-scalable recommends no packages. Bug#510768: xserver-xorg: Please support setting Asturian variant when Asturian was chosen in the installer
Quoting Julien Cristau (jcris...@debian.org): On Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 19:55:45 +0100, Christian Perrier wrote: The atatched patch provides supprot for setting up the Asturian variant of the Spanish keymap when users did choose the Asturian language when installing Debian, as well as a Spanish keymap. There is a very longstanding wishlist to switch to console-setup for D-I, which would simplify most of the keymap management nightmarebut noone really committed self to achieve this. (it stopped when I went on hairy i18n issueswe have a wiki page about this on wiki.d.o) Until this happens, we will still need to have some mapping system between the chosen keymap in D-I and what's setup for X. signature.asc Description: Digital signature
