Could you have a look at this bug/wiki-page.

The user wanted to autostart a program when the session is opened. I
know that Gnome conforms to freedesktop[1] ~/.config/autostart/* but I
don't know about others WM, like xmonad.

Thanks in advance,

Franklin

Bug#515214: Xorg / HAL

Hrm yes you're right. But since at the point where xorg.conf is
processed, we don't know whether hal will report anything, this is not
an easy plan. We could start up with the default xorg.conf devices,
then if any hal device shows up, disable the default ones. But that
sounds very fragile, and gets us back into the evdev vs kbd keycodes
mix, which we had so much fun with when input hotplug got first enabled
(clients not refreshing keymaps correctly, or not refreshing their grabs.
I'd rather not go back there.
Going back to look at the xorg.conf devices if nothing shows up on the
hal connection after a timeout also sounds like it'd bring its amount of
pain too.
I'm more interested in trying to figure out why people's session die on
dbus restart, which so far look like client bugs leading to X restarts
in the middle of an upgrade, and which probably need to be fixed
regardless.

Cheers,
Julien

Bug#528709: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics: Syndaemon does not work.

2009-05-14 Thread Bob Hauck
Package: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics
Version: 1.1.1~git20090510-1
Severity: normal

Syndaemon does not disable the touchpad as it should. If I run syndaemon
from a terminal it prints that it is disabling and re-enabling the touch-
pad, but it is not in fact doing so. The touchpad is active regardless of
what syndaemon says it is doing.

This may be related to a problem I've noticed with synclient. It does not
actually change the state of the TouchpadOff variable unless the -s option
is used. Doing "synclient TouchpadOff=1" does not disable the touchpad
even though if I subsequently run "synclient -l" it shows TouchpadOff=1 as
expected.

However, if I use the -s option to synclient, then it really does disable
the touchpad. So it would appear that the shared memory is still required.

Unfortunately, while the man page documents a -s switch for syndaemon, it
does not accept that option.

Bug#525231: thanks

2009-05-14 Thread Mark Purcell
thanks

I'm seeing this issues too!

I find I have to revert to testing to get a stable system.

I'll give the packages in experimental a go and report back.

Thanks,
Mark

Bug#528708: libgl1-mesa-dri: swrast driver almost completely breaks QtOpenGL

2009-05-14 Thread Daniel Schepler
Package: libgl1-mesa-dri
File: /usr/lib/dri/swrast_dri.so
Version: 7.4.1-1
Severity: important
X-Debbugs-CC: g...@scalable-networks.com

With a setup where the machine is using the swrast DRI driver, many of the Qt
OpenGL examples crash: in my test, 2dpainting, framebufferobject,
framebufferobject2, overpainting, and textures from /usr/lib/qt4/examples/ in
qt4-demos all get a segmentation fault. Looking at the source code for
textures, in particular, it's not doing anything fancy, other than perhaps
doing context sharing; and from the Qt4 source code, the only unusual thing I
can see in its texture generation code is that it uses the
GL_SGIS_generate_mipmap extension if it's available.

Compiling the textures example in debug mode, I get a backtrace starting with:

#0 0x04b2a900 in ?? ()
#1 0x00343c225671 in glXWaitX () at glxcmds.c:660
#2  0x00343ca53b9d in QGLWidget::resizeEvent (this=)
at qgl_x11.cpp:1129
#3  0x003ab162859a in QWidget::event (this=,
event=) at kernel/qwidget.cpp:7667
...

In another similar application I'm involved with developing, in an override of
QGLWidget::initializeGL(), glGetString(GL_VERSION) was returning NULL -- and
giving a warning about calling it with no active context with MESA_DEBUG=1.
That was causing a call to gluBuild2DMipmaps to segfault. That happened even
if I added in an explicit call to QGLWidget::makeCurrent() (which shouldn't be
necessary in any case, as Qt does that itself before calling initializeGL).
Oddly, if I asked it to switch to a different context and then back, the
glGetString started working -- but the application still crashed later in
glXWaitX.

All those examples work fine if I rename /usr/lib/dri/swrast_dri.so, or if I
install the fglrx drivers.

Can you try 2.6.30-rc ? We have seen some strange problems with 2.6.29...

There are packages available from the kernel-archive package pool, for
instance:
http://kernel-archive.buildserver.net/debian-kernel/pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-image-2.6.30-rc5-686_2.6.30~rc5-1~experimental.1~snapshot.13613_i386.deb

I just installed firmware-linux (cleanly). At least for 2.6.26-1, as far as I
can tell, there are no effects. I remember having put some tigon firmware into
/usr/lib/firmware by hand at some point because update-initramfs (?) complained
about missing firmware. However, I do not remember any effects of that at all. I
do not think that there was correlation with the effects that I am seeing in any
way.

so - answer: unfortunately - no.

This is definitely not true as long as testing still has console-setup
1.28. It might be ok to drop the versioned dep, but not before a newer
c-s has transitioned to testing, IMO.
(even then, I'm not convinced that removing the versioned dep buys us
anything over adding a console-setup-mini alternative)

I'm writing this under Gnome, on system that has

Your patch applied against current master seems to have fixed the

Hi, I tried the new xserver-xorg-video-radeon and it appears that when
glxgears is run, the gears and black background write through a window

place in front of the glxgears window.

Did this appear when upgrading from radeon 1:6.12.2-1 ?

1:6.12.2-1 has the same problem.

1:6.12.2-1 packages are available at

Ok it may well be similar to

But I don't know whether the bug is in radeon or Mesa...

Can I get another pair of eyes before I commit this?

Also I don't quite like the fact that we use /tmp/xvfb-run.$$ as a temp
dir instead of using something like 'mktemp -t -d xvfb-run.XX'.

Ok, I've applied this patch and continued git bisect session.

Driver builds correctly, so I was able to finish the search.

I guess you can't. But do you want to wait (possibly indefinitly) for hal to
show up, leaving the user without a usable keyboard/mouse? Is your concern, that
during bootup, hal takes to long to start and is not yet available when X
starts?
Wouldn't something like a 10sec timeout within Xorg help here?

Assuming NoAutoAddDevices if hal isn't there
> when we start up means getting duplicated events whenever it shows up.

I thought, if NoAutoAddDevices is used, that Xorg ignores devices reported via
hal? Or maybe I'm just misunderstanding what you mean with duplicated events.

Can't comment on that.

Bug#528682: xserver-xorg-video-radeon: Combination of X11/testing and kernel 2.6.26 freezes (at least) screen and input

2009-05-14 Thread stefan schwarzer
Package: xserver-xorg-video-radeon
Version: 1:6.9.0-1+lenny4
Severity: important

Hi there,
I am following testing on a Fujitsu/Siemens Lifebook E8010 with Radeon graphics
(Radeon 9600 M10).
A recent package upgrade (must have been the last 2-3 days, May 12 or later)
causes
at least the graphics/input of my system to freeze with linux kernels 2.6.29-1
and 2.6.29-2.
I cannot easily test login/ping via network, so I cannot tell whether the
kernel is still
alive; however there is nothing in the messages file that would point to a
crash (stack trace, e.g.). The freeze does not occur when running kernel
2.6.26 (where I'm typing this message).

The freeze happens systematically about 1-2 seconds after kdm comes up (could
thus also be caused
by kde/qt4.2??). My xorg.conf is really quite basic apart from one line
specifiying
AGPMode 1 which has worked fine so far

The server log looks unsuspicious on first sight, but it seems that something
concerning dri is different for the two kernels (I can't tell if it is
important or not).
Below is a diff between a log from the freeze with kernel 2.6.26-2 against the
current log.

I'd be interested in pointers to resolve the problem, because I'd like to use
the later kernel.
My notebook will not hibernate with 2.6.26 ...

Thanks a lot -

Doesn't seem like everyone's affected, but for me, X.org right now crashes all
the time, resulting in an unusable system. The server log file says the
following:

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

This usually seems to happen when using a movement key or backspace - so far,
letters and the like do not seem affected. But it results in my X being most
unusable. The config has been running stable for some time now, and so far
never troubled me. Atteched for convenience.

Please fix this ASAP.

Hi,

the current version fails to build on GNU/kFreeBSD.

It needs small tweaks, see bellow. It is just
addition "defined(__FreeBSD_kernel__) ||" into two places.

It would also be nice if you can ask upstream
to include this changes.

Thanks in advance

How can I make a distinction between "hal won't be started" and "hal
takes a while to start"? Assuming NoAutoAddDevices if hal isn't there
when we start up means getting duplicated events whenever it shows up.

(also, xorg.conf devices are currently set up before the hal stuff, so
it's not clear -to me anyway- how to make this work without changing the
dix/ddx interface)

Cheers,
Julien

Bug#502030: xserver-xorg-video-siliconmotion: "HWCursor" "off"

2009-05-14 Thread Antos Andras

Followup-For: Bug #502030
Package: xserver-xorg-video-siliconmotion
Version: 1:1.6.0-1

On 5 Mar 2009, Vaidotas Miksys wrote:

I had this issue with the lynx SM910 chip. I resolved it by adding
Option "HWCursor" "off"
to the "Device" section in xorg.conf

Thanks! Yes, this partially fixes the bug also in my case:

 Fixed:
the mouse pointer has strange duplication shadows (sometimes having flag
shape) and, more annoyingly, it is effective focus is not under the
pointer but above it. The distance between the pointer and its effective
focus changes depending on the row position of the screen, it is zero at
the top of the screen.

 Not fixed:
Also there are slant horizontal lines at the bottom of the screen.
Also when running X, Ctrl-Alt-F[1-6] switches to an empty dark display
without getty's login prompt. I can switch back by Alt-F7. (Booting
without X, using e.g. recovery mode, I see the login prompt correctly.)

 Amendment to the latter:
Also if I shutdown X by exiting the win.manager or by Ctrl-Alt-Backspace,
I am left with an empty dark display without getty's login prompt or what
else supposed to be in the virtual console session. But the console
session "works", that is, typing (blindly), e.g.,

$ sudo reboot
does reboot the system.
I just cannot see anything on the console (after X use).
This can be a different bug, than the one with the cursor.

Bug#515214: Xorg / HAL

2009-05-14 Thread Michael Biebl
Hi,

just a few thoughts from a HAL co-maintainer:

As no software is bug free (and HAL or D-Bus are certainly no exception), or a
sysadmin has deliberatly decided to disable the D-Bus or HAL service from
starting during boot, I think the Xorg server needs a safe/basic fallback
anyway, if D-Bus or HAL is down and not accessible.
One recent example is [1] or [2].

Leaving the user with no keyboard or mouse in such a case is imho not a sane
behaviour.

I guess it should just assume AutoAddDevices "false" in such a case and use the
settings from xorg.conf (or if they are not set, use a basic us keyboard layout
and mouse)

If Xorg has such a fallback behaviour, demoting hal to recommends should be
certainly possible and you wouldn't even have to bail out in postinst if
AutoAddDevices has not been explictly set.

Cheers,
Michael

What if you use a single screen/device and 2 monitors with RandR 1.2
instead of the old/unsupported dual screen/device xorg.conf syntax?
See section III of http://wiki.debian.org/XStrikeForce/HowToRandR12

Bah it looks like I somehow forgot to git fetch yesterday before looking
at it, so I didn't notice you had already imported 0.8.8. Sorry about
that.

yeah, I think there is no need for that patch in 0.8.8.
I removed it from git a while ago after I imported the 0.8.8 sources.

what a mess! the source files are definitly MIT, I'm pretty sure I asked
upstream about the COPYING file long time ago, I'll see if I can find
that discussion again, or even ask him again.
Although I'm quite sure our conversation ended up with him saying the
software is indeed MIT licensed.

Bug#528570: With i855GM, xserver-xorg-video-intel tries to load i810 module

Trying and failing to load i810 is not a problem. It happens here as
well but things work fine.

The problem could be that it tries fbdev and this one doesn't fail
properly, and but it doesn't work either. On my laptop, I get
(EE) open /dev/fb0: No such file or directory
and then the intel driver is loaded. So it looks like fbdev properly
fails to load here, causing intel to be tried and it works.

Do you have a framebuffer kernel driver running? Any /dev/fb* exists?
What's in /proc/fb? Can you try without framebuffer kernel drivers?

I think you need the module loaded before X starts, or

Hi!

intel driver tries to load i810 driver which does no exist. It also
happens with previous 2.7.0 version. The simple fix is just to add
something like this in xorg.conf :

Section "Device"
   Identifier "i855GME"
   Driver "intel"
EndSection

Thanks.

I think commit da021c36bbdf3bca31ee50ebe01cdb9495c09b36 fixed this, so
something like

git show da021c36bbdf3bca31ee50ebe01cdb9495c09b36 | patch -p1

should fix that build problem.
