Alex Goebel wrote:
Actually, the same (/very similar) problem appears when using the
NVIDIA binary driver, directly after the 7.5+1 update. Reverting to
 testing fixes this.
Unlikely that it's the nv driver only. Sorry.

nv problems are well identified, and they are not even fixed in latest
nv release, see
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xorg-announce/2009-December/001219.html

nvidia binary problems are impossible to debug, and probably just
related to their ugly binary compatibility glue layer not being updated
to the new server ABI yet. So please don't mix unrelated issues.

Hi, thanks for the prompt response. The problem is that kdm didn't start
up - I was left staring at the login: prompt on vt1 and vt7 was blank.

Are there any other logging options I should look?

Arthur.

Bug#498632: nv reading/interpreting EDID from monitor over DVI-D

2010-01-10 Thread ael

Another Dell if that is significant.

The SP2309W has a native resolution of 2048x1152 and nv gets that right when a

Hello Hiroyuki:

I'm trying to create a debian live using squeeze. When I get the
same error than you. Did you solved this problem?

I have tried to mount with the option --bind the folder /sys, /dev
and /proc, but even that, i can't start the Xwindows. I get the
following error:

Please also check the log file at /var/log/Xorg.0.log for additional information.

I have tried mounting with the option --bind the /tmp and /var folder, but it
doesn't work neither.

Can anyone help me ?

Thank you vey much

Bug#564599: xorg: more intelligent depency check upon upgrade

2010-01-10 Thread arne anka
Package: xorg
Version: 1:7.5+1
Severity: normal

yesterdays upgrade totally broke my X, making the computer effectively
unusable for work.

what happend?
xorg was upgraded to 7.5, although the used nvidia proprietary driver
(from the debian repos!) is not yet functional with the new version.

nvidia-glx is available, the necessary kernel module/source package not
-- therefore nvidia-glx is not installable.
no warning of any kind appeared, pointing out the possible breakage.

i'd really appreciate a more intelligent depency check in the lines of:
- what driver is currently used (xorg.conf)? if there's no xorg.conf,
most likely the default xorg driver, determined by xorg itself is used
-- and with a new release, the driver will be available automatically.
if there's an xorg.conf and the xorg.conf specifies a driver, it should
be easy to check for a package of that driver.
- is it compatible with the new Xorg package?
- if no: is there an installable newer, compatible package for that
  driver available?

if the answer to one of the last two questions is no, at least a
dialog pointing out the issue and asking for a decision should appear.

One possible way to fix this, I guess, would be to replace this
blacklist entry with a list of blacklisted fb drivers, to allow i915

this feasible? Are there other/better solutions?

That sounds like it might be a problem to maintain. Would it be
feasible for each X video driver to blacklist the conflicting fb
driver(s), in the same way that KMS-capable X video drivers set module
parameters to enable KMS?

Bug#498632: nv reading/interpreting EDID from monitor over DVI-D

2010-01-10 Thread ael
In my previous report I had only noticed a single byte difference in the EDID
dumps over
vga as opposed to DVI. In fact there are four:-

$ cmp -l  edid.bin_vga edid.bin_DVI
 11 33 34
 21 16 200
100 24 21
128 113 333

My attempt to decode these didn't seem to match
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended_display_identification_data, so I no
longer sure of
their significance.

However ddcprobe when the VGA connector is in use gives:
-

I have just discovered
   http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=438850
reporting the same problem on a Samsung Syncmaster:
Manufacturer: SAM Model: 21e Serial#: xx

That bug is over two years old. The won't fix is alarming.
In searching for other reports before posting, it was clear to me that many
people see the problem
but don't have the expertize to diagnose what is wrong. Usually they just
revert to VGA.
That, of course, is a dismal option not only because of signal quality, but
also because
of the silliness and waste of power in a redundant conversion to and from
analogue.

If this really is a monitor firmware bug, can't upstream contact Samsung and
Dell to
get them to fix it? Or should I return my monitors to Dell as not fit for
purpose?

From the little I could find out about the EDID specifications, there seem to
be a variety of extensions
with some sections allowing proprietary variation. Could one of those e causing
the
problems? The failure of ddcprobe above seems to confirm one or other of these.

Bug#564653: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics: upgrade to xserver-xorg 7.5 and my synaptics touchpad got lost somehow

2010-01-10 Thread Norbert Preining
Package: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics
Version: 1.2.1-1
Severity: important

I don't know who is to blame, but the recent update or the whole xorg
stuff to 7.5 made my synaptics behave badly. It is in principle again
that all the settings in xorg.conf are not honored.

Interestingly the gpointing-device-settings (gnome config program)
shows me a device and I can configure it, that works.

But the Xorg.0.log contains:
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device Sony Vaio Jogdial (type: MOUSE)
(EE) Sony Vaio Jogdial: failed to initialize for relative axes.
(II) config/udev: Adding input device Sony Vaio Jogdial (/dev/input/mouse2)
(**) Sony Vaio Jogdial: always reports core events
(**) Sony Vaio Jogdial: Device: /dev/input/mouse2
(EE) ioctl EVIOCGNAME failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
(II) UnloadModule: evdev
(EE) PreInit returned NULL for Sony Vaio Jogdial
(II) Synaptics touchpad driver version 1.2.1
ALPS Touchpad no synaptics event device found
(EE) xf86OpenSerial: No Device specified.
(EE) Synaptics driver unable to open device
(EE) PreInit failed for input device ALPS Touchpad
(II) UnloadModule: synaptics

And in the gpointing-device-settings I cannot adjust the accel maxaccel
etc etc, so the mouse/pad is hypersensitive at the moment.

That is an important problem for me as I having a hard time using
the touch pad

Bug#564645: fails to obtain EDID for 1 monitor in dual monitor setup

 Package: xserver-xorg-video-radeon

Just upgraded all packages today and rebooted into my first attempt at
 using xserver 1.7 and friends.

I have an ancient Sony G400 CRT and a Syncmaster LCD attached to my card.
I used to be able to run them in 1600x1200 and 1280x1024, respectively.

Now, when X starts, the Syncmaster (DVI-1) is detected, but the Sony
(DVI-0) is not. Note also that get-edid | parse-edid fails to
 obtain data from the Sony:

You should be able to work around the problem with Option Modeline and

or xrandr --newmode and --addmode.

Bug#564658: [xserver-xorg-video-intel] glReadPixels sometimes gives scrambled output

2010-01-10 Thread Brice Goglin
Max E. wrote:
 Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
 Version: 2:2.9.1-1
 Severity: important

This is a bug which occurs in OpenGL games. I think I first started
encountering this bug late summer of '09, not 100% sure though.
glReadPixels() is returning scrambled output, causing ingame screenshot
functions to be messed up. This didn't use to happen with the same
 hardware.

I have seen this on Debian Sid 32-bit and it persisted when I
reformatted and installed Debian Sid 64-bit. It also shows up on Linux
Mint 8. I no longer have 32-bit Debian, but both other distros are
 currently up-to-date.

I have looked at the code for both of these games, plus of course I
know the code I wrote myself, and the one thing they all have in common
is that they use glReadPixels with these parameters:
 glReadPixels (0, 0, width, height, GL_RGB, GL_UNSIGNED_BYTE, buffer);

I also created a Gimp file with different edge-detect filters from two
of the screenshots, and it looks as if there is a common pattern to the
 scrambling:
 http://www.4shared.com/file/193814901/cbbe8276/screwup_analysis.html
Especially telling is the laplace filter output.

A GL problem is usually in Mesa, not in the X driver. Could you try
upgrading mesa to experimental ?
If you need a recent libdrm, take it from
http://people.debian.org/~bgoglin/rebuilds/libdrm-2.4.16/
