Bug#574396: #574396 xterm: meta no longer sends escape even with eightBitInput: false

It belatedly occurred to me that the issue is likelier indirect, with
bash for some reason picking up on that and forcing xterm into the
wrong mode. :-/ I don't have time to investigate further tonight,
though.

I use a UTF-8 locale, so luit isn't involved. Further investigation
revealed that the relevant upgrade was not of xterm (from version 255,
FTR) but of ncurses-base; the addition of rmm and smm settings to
xterm's terminfo entry somehow caused xterm to ignore the
eightBitInput resource. (There are some other differences as well,
mostly in k* settings, but those look most likely to be the culprit.)

I'm leaving this bug assigned to xterm anyway, both because I'm not
convinced that that change should have had such an effect and because
ncurses gets its xterm terminfo definition from xterm's sources. (The
latest update claims to have taken xterm-246's definition.)

I don't see, either. Just running my build against the resource file
works okay, so it's not _there_. Also, I built an xterm using the options

from the Debian package, and it still seems to work.

But in the past couple of weeks, I've been installing a new machine, and
noticed -on a couple of other Linux's- that there's some breakage in luit
which may be related (if you didn't happen to have the Latin-1 locale
installed, for instance).

Another thought - depends on what your meta key is. I've gotten two
recent reports which deal with a change I made a few years ago, to
suppress use of the meta (or alt) key by xterm if they appear in a
translations resource. A quick check seems to show the last change there
in mid-2008 (patch #238).

If it's not that, then it might help to know the older (good) version of
xterm. It looks like about a year since I made any interesting changes to
the input.c file, which would be where this is implemented.

(generally when I'm down to this point, it also helps to get a debug
trace).

out of curiosity, is this model supposed to support multitouch?
Or even was it working before or with some other live distribution?

Thanks

Bug#574396: xterm: meta no longer sends escape even with eightBitInput: false

2010-03-17 Thread Aaron M. Ucko
Package: xterm
Version: 256-1
Severity: normal

My X resources set XTerm*eightBitInput: false, because (as noted in
#326200 and #534192) that's generally a saner choice nowadays.
However, a recent upgrade (presumably to xterm itself) broke that;
alt-key combinations now yield non-ASCII characters rather than the
expected escape sequences, which I have to remind myself to type
explicitly. :-/

I've just tried with DWM which works fine so I think this bug should be
reassigned to Xmonad.

I will try to gather more info about it...

I've now triaged the RC bugs against nvidia-graphics-drivers and they
should more accurately reflect the state of the package. Many of the bugs
were already fixed and just weren't properly closed. One of them I
downgraded.

There are two open RC bugs, one of which is only borderline RC. Both now
have patches attached to the bugs. One previously did and just wasn't
tagged, and I added a patch for the other. Both are fairly simple.
Another upload plus figuring out why the package didn't get built on i386
should resolve the remaining issues and let the version in unstable
migrate to squeeze.

Bug#573747: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics: Multitouch feature of EeePC 1005ha not usable.

2010-03-17 Thread Margarita Manterola
user debian-eeepc-de...@lists.alioth.debian.org
usertag 573747 +1005HA +1201N
thanks

Hi!

I have the same problem in an EeePC 1201N. I think the difference
with other EeePCs is due to the touchpad being different. The
touchpad model is:

/dev/input/event6
   bustype : BUS_I8042
   vendor : 0x2
   product : 0x7
   version : 433
   name: "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad"
   phys: "isa0060/serio1/input0"
   bits ev : EV_SYN EV_KEY EV_ABS

I've tried enabling multi-touch from udev rules and from synclient,
but it doesn't work. Only TapFinger1 works. Scrolling on the right
bar works, but double finger scrolling does not.

No of course not. I haven't looked at the RC bugs recently but they are
generally fixed by newer upstream or the severity is too high.

Pretty sure that message is not related to your problem, because you
have the touchpad configured in xorg.conf.

And it gets added here, before the hotplugging code kicks in.

You didn't give any details about the actual problem you're seeing, and
my crystal ball doesn't work today.

Package: xterm
Version: 256-1
Severity: normal

I have well working system without package.
But some fonts from xfonts-base hardcoded into /etc/X11/app-defaults/XTerm
For example: *VT100.utf8Fonts.font:
-misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-iso10646-1

So when I run xterm I receive:
xterm: cannot load font
-misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-iso10646-1

And xterm doesn't suggest or recommends xfonts-base.

Depends is not an option, because dependencies on (core) fonts don't
achieve anything (the font needs to be available to the server, which
might be on a different machine, and even that could be through a font
server, on yet another machine).

I'm not convinced we need Suggests either; xfonts-base is depended on by
the 'xorg' metapackage, so most systems should have it. If people want
to uninstall the xorg package, they can just as well tweak xterm
resources to use 'fixed' (which is always available) or a font using
xft.

Closing this bug.

Julien

I think the patch I mentioned has nothing to do with the bug I reported, I
only mentioned it because I patched the package meanwhile the patch was not
available in testing. And the patch works (for its bug).

Soon I will upgrade to 6.12.5 or later.

The bug I reported was about the screen that darks or even gets completely
black (and unusable) after some days of uptime. It is hard to reproduce
because it may spend several days before it appears. When I upgrade the
radeon driver I will look whether this behaviour continues.

I agree with this statement. I have been investigating the packaging of
nvidia-graphics-drivers and most bugs are unreproducible on my machines
with 190.53. I had scheduled some time for bug triaging but due to an
unexpected trip to China (and preparation for it) I had to delay.

However, there is a critical security bug on nvidia-kernel-common very
easy to fix that has to enter testing.

PS: I am not formally part of the team, not being a DM/DD. But I do have
an interest in joining it since I do the maintainance for many different
machines almost all with nvidia GPU.

Bug#574061: #574061 fonts from optional xfonts-base package is hardcoded into /etc/X11/app-defaults/XTerm

2010-03-17 Thread Thomas Dickey
Aside from having the package either suggest or depend on xfonts-base,
I don't see anything that needs to be changed.

Generally, the problem with RC bugs against nvidia-graphics-drivers are
just lack of team manpower so far as I can tell (as a user but not someone
involved in the team). Each time I look at them, most of them should be
downgraded (#523879) or just closed (#534873, #561239, #549869, #548840),
or while a bug are probably no longer relevant enough to really be RC
(#558369), or ones that I've never been able to reproduce despite building
the package all the time (#416594).

The problem is mostly people not having enough time for bug triage and
cleanup. Very little of that high RC bug count represents any serious
problem with the current packages in unstable other than reflecting that
lack of time.

Regarding the version in testing, could it please be removed? It has
unfulfilled dependencies (needs kernel from Lenny) and does not work
with current xserver-xorg-core (support for xserver 1.7 was added in
190.36, according to /usr/share/doc/nvidia-glx/NVIDIA_Changelog.gz).

You mean regardless of 9 RC bugs opened against the package? That even
sounds like "please force the newest upstream versions into squeeze
regardless of any packaging bugs", or do you want to release with the current
version in testing?

Bug#523013: [945GM EXA] lockup

2010-03-17 Thread Raphael Frey
It seems that I have the same problem. After upgrading to Lenny, my X server
often crashes, then it seems that it wants to restart it, but without success,
and finally I get an error message. I attached the Xorg.0.log to this mail. I
am not sure if I have the same problem than Luca but the log file of the X
server looks very similar to the log file attached by him.

Finally some informations -- probably that helps:

* I do not use Compiz,
* and the last three or for times the X server crashed while using
Open Office.

Best regards

Raphael

I forget to write that I do resp. did not have any problems with the X server
in Etch and Sid (with the same computer of course).
