Bug#584801: problem with German umlaut

In a perfect world, it would be unnecessary since you wouldn't have
anything written on your terminal that wasn't in the proper charset.

In the real world, where the average xterm user runs dozens if not
hundreds of tools which write unvalidated data to the terminal (on
stdout or stderr), and few if any tools that use 8-bit control
characters, -k8 as default would be a good idea.

It might be, except that misrendering the text only appears to fix the
problem, and just leads to further bug reports about the inevitable
garbage that's shown on the screen.

(It would be nice if xterm could somehow guess that the encoding
has changed ;-).

|4. Internationalisation
|
| The WHOIS protocol has not been internationalised. The WHOIS
| protocol has no mechanism for indicating the character set in use.
| Originally, the predominant text encoding in use was US-ASCII. In
| practice, some WHOIS servers, particularly those outside the USA,
| might be using some other character set either for requests, replies,
| or both. This inability to predict or express text encoding has
| adversely impacted the interoperability (and, therefore, usefulness)
| of the WHOIS protocol.

... as a candidate feature, it's about on a par with

   brokenLinuxOSC (class BrokenLinuxOSC)
If true, xterm applies a workaround to ignore malformed control
sequences that a Linux script might send. Compare the palette
control sequences documented in console_codes with ECMA-48.
   The default is "true."

   brokenSelections (class BrokenSelections)
If true, xterm in 8-bit mode will interpret STRING selections
as carrying text in the current locale's encoding. Normally
STRING selections carry ISO-8859-1 encoded text. Setting this
resource to "true" violates the ICCCM; it may, however, be use-
ful for interacting with some broken X clients. The default is
   "false."

   brokenStringTerm (class BrokenStringTerm)
provides a work-around for some ISDN routers which start an
application control string without completing it. Set this to
"true" if xterm appears to freeze when connecting. The default
   is "false."

(the last, brokenStringTerm, is actually more pertinent to your use of
xterm than -k8)

I added it for the people using Cyrillic encodings, since those aren't
ISO-8859-1, and actually have printable characters in the 128-159 range.

Bug#582456: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so: xserver crashed

On 06/06/2010 07:53 PM, Julien Cristau wrote:

Not yet.

If so it would be good to get a backtrace from gdb, either by
attaching gdb to Xorg from ssh, or getting X to dump core (the -core
command line option should leave a core file in /etc/X11 after the
crash).

I've added the following section to my gdm.conf and hope that I'll get a
core dump next time:

[server-Standard]
name=Standard server
command=/usr/bin/X -core -audit 0
flexible=true

Cheers, Thiemo

I wouldn't. We don't split the kernel package in tiny bits, I don't
think it'd be particularly more appropriate to do it for mesa.

We already Recommend libgl1-mesa-dri from the xserver packages, and
Depend on it from the xorg metapackage. The chip-specific libdrm
backends are tiny. I don't find the glide argument really important ;)
and the size issue is IMO fairly minor as well.

So, would you reconsider if a patch was to be provided?

The size issue would be one reason, other reasons would be being able
to switch the libglide3 Suggests into a Depends (but I can understand
how you might not find this really important :), not requiring libdrm
backends for drivers one does not use, and being able to Recommend a
dri specific driver from the xorg video driver.

Bug#585171: xserver-xorg: keyboard layout not applied after installing Xorg

2010-06-09 Thread Michal Suchanek
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.5+6
Severity: normal

Hello,

I tried this on a live CD but I would expect this has implications for
normal systems as well.

The issue is:

I have /etc/default/keyboard set up with my preferred keymap which I
heard is the way to set up system-wide keyboard layout in X.

I have a live-CD with X preinstalled and on that CD the keyboard works
fine.

On another CD the X server is not installed so I install it with

aptitude install xserver-xorg icewm nodm

Running nodm as root then gives me a X session where the keyboard is
*not* set up.

Looking through X logs I see that on the system with preinstalled X the
layout is logged Xorg.log as the one in /etc/default/keyboard, on the CD
where I install the X server after boot the layout is logged and works
as just "us".

keyboard-configuration is installed in either case.

Bug#583609: #583609 some database entries are cut off on non-ASCII chars

2010-06-09 Thread Thomas Dickey
The problem arises from attempting to write non-ISO-8859-1 data,
which contains control information.

The issue can be addressed by the user modifying his resource settings,
to compensate for the mis-encoded data.

commit 3f2aaabcdfe339908338dff42aabc1fef47e8694
Author: Cedric Cellier
Date: Mon Feb 8 11:44:28 2010 +0100

Fix lack of precision in video resizing. #26443

On some videos the last displayed line was wrong. This can
be fixed using LynxEM+ VPR68. Code borrowed from siliconmotion's
in-house driver.
Also fix a typo.
