Seems that the problem was in the hardware. Reconnecting the monitor decreased the blinking somewhat and now it disappeared completely with no obvious reason. Bug#541388: Happens to me too
Hi, In my .xinitrc/.xsession I have a call to xmodmap .xmodmap (I use a US keyboard/layout and I need French diacritic characters), which works just fine. The problem is that after an upgrade (I use debian unstable and I upgraded the packages two days ago (previous update was 23 June)), after suspend/resume, the settings from this file are lost = I need to manually execute the xmodmap command after each resume. I do not know what package is the responsible for that. Many packages were updated (console-setup, xserver-xorg-video-intel, udev, keyboard-configuration etc.), I can give you the complete list if you wish. Package: xserver-xorg-video-ati Version: 1:6.9.0-1+lenny4 We are using Debian Linux on 600 HP thin clients and about once every 2-3 weeks those employees that have compiz enabled crash the Xserver. You might want to add versions to these breaks, also a different package is maybe a better fit for this breaks line, but at least in my test this caused the xorg upgrade problem to disappear. Ah, that sounds doable, thanks. (Probably with versioned Breaks in xserver-xorg-core.) Those people not running Compiz never see this issue, it's definitely related to the 3D GNOME desktop. It might be worth trying a newer version of mesa, the one in stable is a couple years old so it's possible this has been fixed since. Cheers, Julien Newer mesa will not install without a complete upgrade of X. It wants xserver-xorg-core 2:1.5+. This is a huge engineering upgrade for us and will take lots of QA hours to test all of our hardware and software. I hoped we could find a fix within the confines of Lenny. Lenny is shipped on HP thin clients as part of a custom build designed specifically for these devices.
