Yes, in /etc/ld.so.conf :

/usr/X11R6/lib/Xaw3d
/usr/X11R6/lib
/usr/i486-linuxlibc1/lib

include /etc/ld.so.conf.d/*.conf

The first 3 lines refer to obsolete directories. I've just removed them.

I'd appreciate a review before uploading that to NEW. I didn't check
yet how it goes with wayland linked against this system library (as
opposed to against the one manually installed under /usr/local), nor
with a prospective wayland package. Probably tomorrow.

This new default value also has the merit of making the 'check' target
to work in distcheck which does not have a copy of the xkeyboard-config
keymaps in its sandbox based on ${dataroot}/X11/xkb. The test data
cannot find the "include" keymaps it needs.

Package: xserver-xorg-video-openchrome
Version: 1:0.2.904+svn827-1

Recently I moved from a dead Intel Motherboard to an Asus Motherboard.

I started experiencing complete random freezes running in VLC, Flash,
MPlayer, IceWeasel and a host of other applications etc. The problem
was reproducible by frantically scrolling in Flash.

The system required a hard reboot (press of a button) and Ctrl+Alt+SysRq
+REISUB would not work either.

After much investigation on the net/google I tracked this down to the
openchrome drivers currently installed version.

See:
http://www.openchrome.org/trac/ticket/354#comment:6

My IGP chipset is VIA P4M800 which does not support dri.

See:
http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/chipsets/p4-series/p4m800/
http://wiki.openchrome.org/pipermail/openchrome-devel/2009-May/000326.html

I tried various options in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Finally the one that worked is disable "dri".

The system has so far been running stable.

Any chances to get this fixed for the next version of the driver.

Attached is my full xorg.conf, lspci, uname output.

Thanks

Bug#583186: Freeze Solved

2011-01-28 Thread isahib
My random freezing problems have been solved.

Here is what I did to fix the problem
1. Ran memtest86+ through GRUB and it kept freezing on tests for the 1st
pass.
2. In the BIOS I changed the DRAM Frequency from the default Auto/533MHz
to 400MHz.
3. Ran memtest86+ and after several hours of running multiple passes all
tests passed succesfully.
4. The PC and Debian has been rock solid stable ever since.

The PC is running:
Mainboard - ASUS P5VDC-MX (Bios Version 0809)
CPU - Pentium D
OS - Debian Squeeze

Thanks
Ibaidul

Bug#546836: Bug confirmed: Matrox G550 unusable under squeeze

OK, what I thought. Meaning we only need to check ldd's output for
/usr/local and /usr/X11R6, there's no special search path magic in
X. Will update the bug script in a moment then.

Thanks.

* URL : http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/lib/libxkbcommon/
* License : MIT/X
  Programming Lang: C
Description : library interface to the XKB compiler

The idea is to get rid of the fork/exec xkbcomp in the X server, and
move that to a shared library; which can be reused, e.g. in wayland.

This is an experimental library, and it will likely break in horrible
ways in its early days. We should be able to keep that manageable thanks
to strong dependencies.

Yes, in /etc/ld.so.conf :

/usr/X11R6/lib/Xaw3d
/usr/X11R6/lib
/usr/i486-linuxlibc1/lib

include /etc/ld.so.conf.d/*.conf

The first 3 lines refer to obsolete directories. I've just removed them.

Bug#611400: ITP: wayland -- new generation compositor

2011-01-28 Thread Cyril Brulebois
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: debian-x@lists.debian.org

* Package name: wayland
  Version : git
Upstream Author : Kristian Høgsberg and others
* URL : http://wayland.freedesktop.org/
* License : GPL & MIT/X mostly.
  Programming Lang: C
  Description : new generation compositor

>From the homepage:

Wayland is a protocol for a compositor to talk to its clients as well as
a C library implementation of that protocol. The compositor can be a
standalone display server running on Linux kernel modesetting and evdev
input devices, an X application, or a wayland client itself. The clients
can be traditional applications, X servers (rootless or fullscreen) or
other display servers.

The wayland repository includes a compositor which can run as an X
client or under Linux KMS and a few clients, but both the compositor and
clients are essentially test cases.

I'm not yet sure what pieces we're going to ship, and in which binary
packages. But let's keep track in the BTS that the X Strike Force is
going to take care of it.

(I don't like the “new generation” bit in the short description,
suggestions welcome.)

By default console-setup (keyboard-configuration) uses pc105 on almost
all architectures (and no architecture has evdev as default). I suppose
this is OK and nothing has to be changed in console-setup?

Currently evdev is allowed as a model if the user explicitely selects it
during the debconf configuration (the question is with low priority) or
directly in /etc/default/keyboard. If this is undesirable, then perhaps
evdev has to be removed from /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/xorg.xml?

I end up with a black screen (with backlight) and a non-responsive X
server (will not change VTs) when:

1. I log into the machine as one user (bmc).
2. I suspend the machine by putting the lid down (handled by
gnome-power-manager).
3. I resume the machine[0].
4. Instead of entering my password at the gnome-screensaver prompt, I
click the "Switch user" button.
5. At the gdm prompt, I then log in as another user (bdb).
6. I log out as that user (bdb).

I expect that instead, I will get the gnome-screensaver prompt as I did
before. Note that the first user (bmc) uses compiz, whilst the second
user does not. Also, this behavior occurs both with and without KMS; I
currently have it enabled. I'm using the latest
xserver-xorg-video-intel, -input-synaptics, and -input-evdev from sid.
It also occurred with the X server and evdev and intel drivers from
experimental, when those were installable. I can kill the X server
using Magic SysRq, and then change VTs. Obviously, that's not at all
preferable, since it kills my session.

If there's anything you need me to test, please just let me know.

[0] Due to a bug in gnome-power-manager (#559171), upon resume, it
suspends again; therefore, I must put the lid down and then open it
again so that it resumes.

I guess it is well known that the fn-f7 key which toggles between LCD and
external monitor for thinkpads
and other laptops does not work in X.org although it worked in XF86. Older
versions of X.org had
options "BiosDisplay" and "BiosHotkeys" which reportedly fixed this problem,
but these are no longer used.
Is there a fix within the current xorg? Having to go through xrandr is a lot
more difficult than hitting the
fn-f7 key.

I haven't seen this with 2.6.37-rc5 or 2.6.37, and I have definitely
tried the steps above more recently. If you'd prefer to close this,
that's fine; I can always reopen it if it becomes a problem again.

I'm pretty sure I am, since otherwise the Bluetooth dongle should not
do anything with X at all. That and:

(WW) AllowEmptyInput is on, devices using drivers 'kbd', 'mouse' or 'vmmouse'
will be disabled.

If you upgrade to this version of xserver-xorg-core in
Debian Etch, it causes some icons in icewm window
manager to display in a corrupted manner. The actual
pixmaps themselves are not corrupted. They're just
rendered in a manner that is. Other WMs and DEs may
possibly also be affected.

Downgrading back to version 2:1.1.1-21etch1 fixes the
rendering problem. So it definitely is an issue with
version 2:1.1.1-21etch2

Comments/Problems:

I have done this before with Intel i386 many times. This is my first try with
an AMD64 CPU/MoBo and AMD64 Linux.

Install, options selection and download, and Boot up sequence is normal until I
get a Blue screen that says
"Failed to start the X server (your graphical interface). It looks like that it
is not set up correctly. Would you like to
view the X server output to diagnose the problem?"

A Yes No option appears there and is overlayed with white on
black text: "eth0: no IPv6 routers present".

Then:

Then I get a command line screen that asks me to login

still reproducible with the X stack from squeeze/sid, or from

People really should be using that these days. Anyway, I tried to

If somebody can still reproduce it, I'd suggest not wasting time, and
using Xephyr instead (and reporting bugs against it if any).

yes it does. Making it build with 1.7 was painful enough and I doubt it
going to be any more fun in the future.
I guess the only concern is to make sure there is an upgrade path to
evdev and that the documentation is clear enough on how to replicate the
functionalities from evtouch.

One specific use case for evtouch was with virtual machines emulating a
touchscreen to simplify mouse grabbing and ungrabbing from the host to
the guest. It would be also interesting to verify that evdev can handle
that case no problem.

Other than that, perfectly fine :)

When running from xinit (as opposed to running just X) the X server gets hal to
auto-add devices. This kills the X server.

The workaround id to turn auto-adding devices off.

When the vertical refresh rate is changed system wide gdm's logon screen
doesn't
change to that rate. As a result of that certain blurry artifacts is visible
on

logon screen but after logging into gnome everything is fine. The problem is
only at logon screen.

I suggest that gdm be fixed.

I am using Debian Etch, kernel 2.6.18-3-686-bigmem.

The Xorg server crashes under certain circumstances on my system when
compositing is enabled, both with the "nv" driver and nvidias binary "nvidia"
driver.

To reproduce, I do the following on my system:
1. enable compositing for kwin (to do this, run "kcmshell kwinoptions" and
enable Tranparency and drop shadows there).
2. start yakuake (a quake-style terminal emulator for KDE).
3. in a yakuake terminal, start mplayer with some audio file.
4. Open a new tab in yakuake (Ctrl-Alt-N).
5. hide yakuake (by pressing F12).
Xorg now crashes.

I've made a core dump, but it's 22MB and I don't know if debians bug tracking
system can handle this. So I decided to upload it to rapidshare instead.

since 6.6.3 (I think), MergedFB does not work as expected any more. The
detection, modes, etc. everything works fine as before, but the panel
is blank.

radeotool light says, the panel backlight is on.

The Fn-F3 and Fn-F7 key does not seem to have any effect at all, not
even with BIOSHotKeys on.

This is on a T41p with ATI Technologies Inc M10 NT [FireGL Mobility T2]

Greetings,
Joachim

Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.1.0-16

I found a problem with Xserver, Type1 fonts, gsfonts-x11 and Tk on woody.
When the xserver has Type1 fonts in the fontpath and package gsfonts-x11
is installed the default Tk button font {Helvetica -12 bold} looks ugly:

After some debugging I have found a strange behavior of the Xserver which
seems causing the Tk problem. The bug happens only when all the following
conditions are met:

- the X server (4.1.0) is running at 75 dpi

- the Type1 module is loaded in the X server

- the directory /usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1 is at the end of X fontpath

- package gsfonts-x11 is installed

- Tk is searching a font {Helvetica -12 bold}, the default for buttons

The bug can be reproduced with the following commands:

### Install the required packages
# apt-get install xserver-xfree86 gsfonts-x11 tk8.3

### Start the X server at 75dpi
$ startx -- :1 -dpi 75

### Set the X fontpath. Don't use a font server
$ xset fp
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/:unscaled,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1
$ xset fp rehash

### List fonts, if some have 12-120-75-75-p-0 we have the problem
$ xlsfonts -fn "-*-helvet*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1" | grep p-0-iso8859-1
...
-adobe-helvetica-bold-r-normal--12-120-75-75-p-0-iso8859-1

### Run this Tk script
$ echo "pack [button .b -font {Helvetica -12 bold} -text abcde12345]" | wish

On my woody sytem the button text looks very ugly, in particular the "2" has
a small dot under the baseline and all the font is generally very bad.

If I remove /usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1 from the fontpath or deinstall the
package gsfont-x11, which install the font used by Tk, the text is ok:

$ xset fp- /usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1
$ xset fp rehash
$ echo "pack [button .b -font {Helvetica -12 bold} -text abcde12345]" | wish

The following packages and fonts are installed on my system:

$ dpkg -l xserver* gsfonts-x11 tk8.3 | grep ^i
ii xserver-common4.1.0-16 files and utilities common to all X servers
ii xserver-xfree86 4.1.0-16 the XFree86 X server

What seems strange to me is that sometimes the xserver lists fontnames
which should not exist:

The bug doesn't occur any longer on my machine. However, both my hard- and
my software have changed since then, so that doesn't necessarily mean it's
fixed.

Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.4~5
Severity: important

Hello,

After today's upgrade to lastest Xorg, I have two problems:

1) On Xorg login screen (without loggin into system), if I switch to
any tty and then back to Xorg, then touchpad is stop working at all,
and Alt key is stop working also (so I can't use Alt+E to restart
Xorg and Ctrl+Alt+BkSp to kill Xorg).
Restarting Xorg (by switching to tty and issue /etc/init.d/kdm restart)
fixes this problem.

2) After resume from suspend-to-disk touchpad stop working.
Restarting Xorg also fixes this problem.

Both problems 100%% reproduceable.

I use Debian Lenny with Xorg from experimental on Dell Studio 1535.

Now I use following versions:
xserver-common 2:1.5.99.901-2
xserver-xorg 1:7.4~5
xserver-xorg-core 2:1.5.99.901-1
xserver-xorg-input-evdev 1:2.1.1-1
xserver-xorg-input-kbd 1:1.3.2-2
xserver-xorg-input-mouse 1:1.4.0-1

Before upgrade versions was:
xserver-common 2:1.5.3-1
xserver-xorg 1:7.4~4
xserver-xorg-input-all 1:7.4~4
(not sure about other packages)

Might be the kernel causing issues as well (I have some bad memories
of appletouch…).

You might try using evdev instead of kbd+mouse, anyway. See:

x11-common: drop usage of /var/lib/x11/Xwrapper.config.{md5sum,roster}.

Since sarge (I think), no other package has been handling
/etc/X11/Xwrapper.config, so assume we're the only owner, remove the
state files on upgrade. The checksum is also not needed, we read the
allowed_users value from the file in the config script and preserve it.

Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 2:1.7.7-3
Severity: important

When using flash under firefox or chromium, switching it to full screen mode
causes flash to segfault.

I just upgraded this computer to testing, however, both the adobe flash plugin
and chromium were already running the latest versions so they were not upgraded.
Both were working fine before the upgrade.

I found the following error in the Xorg log file:

(EE) GLX error: Can not get required symbols.

Searching the net I found reference to this error with a different X driver
having a possible fix by setting in the monitor section:

   option "DPMS" "true"

this had no effect.

Finally in the Module section of xorg.conf I changed:

   Load "glx"
to
   Disable "glx"

which resolved the immediate problem, except of course that glx is still broken.

As I see it, there are a few issues here which should be resolved:

1 - The cause of the "(EE) GLX error: Can not get required symbols." error
  needs to be fixed.

2 - X should abort when an error like this occurs rather than continuing
to run with what is apparently a corrupt environment.

3 - If X is going to continue to run after an error like this, it needs
to cleanly remove the offending module. This clearly did not happen,
otherwise, there would be no difference between running flash with
glx failing to load correctly and glx disabled.

As a copy of the full log file is included below from the successful run, I am
including here the diffs between the log files from successful and failed
sessions:

Hi Jim.

What happens with the X stack from squeeze/sid, or from experimental?
Also, that could be handled by some ACPI stuff rather than by an upper
layer, I'm not exactly sure how it's supposed to work… Fn-* stuff is
usually not fun stuff.

Incidentally I just hit the 100M watermark today. :-( Worse xrestop
shows only 24M pixmap memory leaving a now implausible difference of 76M
for Xorg. Note that this is the very same Xorg process as in my last
mail (it was not restarted). So we can conclude that a leak is still
present, but it got slower. I'd estimate that it leaks about 20 bytes /
second. Any suggestions on how to continue?

Package: base
Severity: normal

I'm running debian-stable (etch) with the latest kernel
(linux-image-2.6.18-5-686).

Cpu: pentium 4 (single core, no hyper-threading (no bios option)).

Box: Dell Optiplex GX260

uname: Linux pumpkin 2.6.18-5-686 #1 SMP Sat Dec 1 22:58:58 UTC 2007 i686
GNU/Linux

Symptoms:

The keyboard behaviour is usually correct, but when I press a
key with involves some cpu calculation (more than displaying
the key), then the systems behaves like if the key was not
released (at the time I release it). It is seen released
"later".

Some examples: the key is ctrl-T under firefox (I get tons of
new tabs), or / (slash) under firefox (when searching in a big
page), ctrl+ (this is horrible, I get a one huge letter after a
while on my firefox window with this), 'enter' in dselect on
the search line (in a search pressing / in the package list), ...

This does not happen in text-mode-virtual-console (with
dselect).

This happens ONLY with 2.6 (any version from 2.6.15 up to
2.6.18), I have NO problem with an old 2.4.27 (compiled
myself).

This happens with PS/2 keyboards and USB keyboards.

What I tried:
Lots of combinations of acpi=off noacpi nosmp noapic nolapic
notsc irqpoll noapictimer...

What I did not try:
Recompile a kernel with no smp and/or other PREEMPT config (the
one shipped with Debian has SMP and CONFIG_PREEMPT_NONE=y)

For now I'm using this script where the list of number are
keycodes which match the keys for which I want to enable repeat
(backspace, del, arrows for now):
---
#!/bin/sh
xset r on
for i in `xmodmap -pke|awk '{print $2;}'`;do
xset r $i
done
for i in `xmodmap -pke|awk '{print $2;}' | egrep -v "98|102|104|100|22|107"`; do
xset -r $i
done
---

It is my office's PC so I have no much time to try everything.
But if one tells me something to try, I'll do it.
I can live with this for now, but I'd prefer find a good solution.
I do not know wherelse to put my bug report apart from
"base".

david

Great. And closing the bug for real, Brice forgot to add “-done” to
the mail address. ;)

happy new year/ping? :D

We can also close this bug if you just can't reproduce it anymore; I
wouldn't worry too much if I were you.

it's been a while, but… are you still having this issue with an X

Every now and then, without any pattern or triggering event that I can
determine, CPU usage spikes to 100% and a keypress is multiplied dozens,
hundreds or even thousands of times. This happens across all different contexts
within X, such as typing text in an application or an xterm, using an
application's hotkeys, and even using the WM's (Xfce) control keys. I have
never seen the problem at the console (not even when X is running and I shift
back to the console with alt-ctrl-F1), and I have never seen it under kernels
in the 2.4.x series (currently kernel-image-2.4.27-2-386 2.4.27-11), only under
2.6.x series kernels.

Yes for the libs aspect. But I figured there might be other stuff
there, so we might want to warn anyway.

I blame missing caffeine. Doesn't hurt too much since pecho is only
called on a single string at once, but that might hit later… Thanks.

Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.2.1-3
Severity: minor

Sometimes using the framebuffer device can lead to problems (for example
when using nvidia drivers). The error message from the X server is not
very verbose:

EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

Nobody can know that this can be the result of using framebuffer.
It would be good, if debconf displays an extra warning to the question
of whether using the framebuffer device, like:

If you get the error message "no screens found" and
/var/log/XFree86.0.log contains the line
"EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.",
then this is possibly the result of using the framebuffer
device. Try turning this option off, by running
"dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" and see if the error goes
away.

I would say this is more a bug of the actual X server, but this message
could help newbies a lot by showing them a frequent cause of problems.

Maybe this problem is the one of bug #157924:
"xserver-xfree86: [nv] no screens found on GeForce2 MX DDR rev 178"

(I do not send the content of my /var/log/XFree86.0.log, because it
wouldn't help here.)

I prefer ponies.

That said, closing this bug, keeping it open and wontfix just adds
noise on the BTS pages. Also, autoconfiguration just works
nowadays. People using an xorg.conf file really should be able to
figure out what they're doing.

I think the evdev driver is supposed to work mostly fine with
touchscreens (assuming there's kernel support). The usbtouchscreen

Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.3+18
Severity: normal

I installed the nvidia driver before xorg, or I wouldn't have run into
this as I usually install a couple of fallbacks.

xserver-xorg Depends on xserver-xorg-video-all or xserver-xorg-video-2.

The nvidia-glx drivers provide xserver-xorg-video-2, so when I
installed xorg, no other xserver-xorg-video-* were installed.

The X server does not probe for this driver, rendering this
configuration broken.

While I realize the nvidia binary server receives less support than the
free drivers, it would be nice if this were better integrated in some
way.

Additionally, the user should be notified (by the nvidia pkg) that they
will need to do this further configuration before they end up with a
constantly flashing console. (suggest/recommend the nv driver too?)

is that still happening with an X stack from squeeze/sid, or from
experimental? No big hope, there's been no activity on the upstream

In my current configuration it works every time.

I am using gnash 0.7.2-1lenny1, should flash be an issue in the trigger.

Hello,

when I run glxinfo with the fbdev driver, I get a crash. More detailed
info is attached.

I was only able to google this

http://www.oszine.de/node/7389

I hope it helps, although I doubt it.

BTW This is similar to #422505, however, the backtrace is different.

I can't reproduce this, and upstream claims it shouldn't happen (at
least in this form) since the code was rewritten, see comment#2:
  https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11823#c2

Marking as fixed in the version I have handy. It might be also fixed
in squeeze's version.

This is rather request for help in finding where is the bug, because I don't
know how to do it. That's what happens to me:

With LC_CTYPE=pl_PL.UTF-8 (I cannot repreduce it with LC_CTYPE=pl_PL) while
using galeon or mozilla I find sometimes that I am unable to change active
window. Menus, adding tabs and browsing works. gkrellm is being updated. I can
kill server with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, but now other window responds to mouse,
fvwm keyboard shortcuts does not work etc. How can I check what's going on?
Or maybe this is repreducible somwhere else...

Only binaries? (Unless source is included in 32bit/64bit tarballs?)

Anyway, we probably won't add any driver not hosted on freedesktop.
Even the drivers hosted there might lack maintenance. Drivers hosted
elsewhere tend to bitrot more quickly.

I have a MacBook with a Synaptics touchpad, and it only has one button.
I used the following XKB snippet to map some unused keyboard keys as
pointer buttons 2 and 3:

   partial modifier_keys
   xkb_symbols "threebutton" {
  replace key  { [ Pointer_Button2 ] };
  replace key  { [ Pointer_Button3 ] };
   };

The mapping works, but leads to a strange bug which can be reproduced as
follows:

   1) Cause a mouse event (movement or button press) using the touchpad
  or touchpad button.
   2) Press to issue a Button2 event (or to issue a Button3 event)
   3) Use either the touchpad or an external mouse to cause any mouse
  event (movement or button press).

When step (3) occurs, the mouse cursor will jump. The distance traveled
depends on the absolute cursor position: the x-delta is probably (-0.05 * x),
and the y-delta is around (-0.3 * y). I can cycle through steps (2) and
(3) indefinitely, and the cursor will trace out a curve which drifts
towards the upper left of the screen.

Note that the bug does *not* occur if step (1) is replaced by an
external mouse action. It has to be the touchpad.

Also note that 'xev' does *not* show any MotionNotify events at the time
the cursor jumps. Here is a snippet of the xev log which shows trackpad
movement, followed by a press/release of , followed by a
press/release of the trackpad button:

--- END XEV OUTPUT ---

I spent some time dumping event information from the Synaptics driver,
but I didn't see anything particularly strange... which is why I'm
filing the bug against core.
