Bug#478263: xdm: does not allow to log in when no password is set
Cyril Brulebois (06/03/2011): > if you'd like this bug to be looked at, you probably want to report > it upstream (product xorg, component App/xdm): > http://bugs.freedesktop.org/ Actually, man xdm says: xlogin.Login.allowNullPasswd If set to ``true'', allow an otherwise failing password match to succeed if the account does not require a password at all. Bug#588566: xserver-xorg-input-all: For amd64 should depend on xserver-xorg-input-kbd and xserver-xorg-input-mouse

I already answered that while closing the bug. evdev should be able to handle such a device, there's no reason to add extraneous dependencies to the input-all meta package on Linux. Of course, this discussion is all just a side issue to my original bug report on the missing dependency issue for the legacy approach. Please fix that! Also, please remove the moreinfo tag. Please don't “!” me. I'm not convinced this is a bug to only pull evdev on Linux. AFAICT if it doesn't work for your device, that's a bug (could be in the kernel, in the server, or in the driver) which ought to be fixed. So back to the initial bug report, closing. Feel free to file one (probably against xserver-xorg-input-evdev, that should be a good start) if you want us to look into it. Hi Cyril: evdev and inputattach are separate issues. The issue I would like to see addressed is that xserver-xorg-input-all does not depend on xserver-xorg-input-kbd and xserver-xorg-input-mouse like it should. However, the result was a complete freeze because xserver-xorg-input-kbd and xserver-xorg-input-mouse were not installed by default by xserver-xorg-input-all. The issue was resolved by installing those drivers, but wouldn't it be better to have them installed by default for the benefit of those like me with hardware where the evdev approach does not work? Of course, if xserver-xorg-input-mouse and/or xserver-xorg-input-kbd interfere with evdev, that is a different story, but I don't think they affect it at all unless the user specifically is requesting kbd and mouse drivers as I outlined above. Bug#104108: geometry border padding
On Sun, 6 Mar 2011, Cyril Brulebois wrote: Hi, forwarding this to Thomas, I'm not sure when he subscribed to the BTS: I've seen it before - the problem is that the way xterm uses the window manager hints for increments seems to get in the way of doing this. The fullscreen mode turns off those increments, and I'll be picking away at the resulting problems (such as truncated character cells) for a while. Joey Hess (08/07/2001): Package: xterm Version: 4.0.3-4 Severity: wishlist As my window manager allows me to do so, I often use full-screen-maximized (to the point where there is nothing but text on the screen) xterms these days for things like running web browsers and reading mail. But there's a problem -- xterm snaps its geometry to a multiple of the text width and height, plus the border pad. With my most common font, this results in an xterm which uses all but 2 pixels of my screen horizontally, and some 5 vertically. Not quite fullscreen maximization. The remaining pixels show whatever's underneath the xterm of course, which rather ruins the 100% text look. I can play with the xterm border and make my window 2 pixels larger, but I haven't found a way yet to independantly control the widths of the horizontal and vertical borders. But all this playing around with borders results in xterms I would only want to use full-screen-maximized. It's not very flexible; if I want to use that xterm unmaximized it will look funny, and if I want to change fonts (and thus need a new border width), I have to start a new xterm with borders tuned for that font. What I'd like is a way to tell xterm that I want it to run in a special mode where if it is forcibly resized to some wonky geometry like 1024x480, and that's doesn't match exactly the snapped-to geometry it likes, just wing it: come up with appropriate horizontal and vertical border widths as needed. When resized back to an exact multiple of the font size, get rid of those borders. Maybe it's a tall order, maybe it's fairly easy. Non-x-programmer here doesn't know. KiBi. -- Thomas E. Bug#616604: xserver-xorg: [grave]X does not working for nvidia 3100M / Dell latitude e6510
Hi, Lukasz Szybalski (05/03/2011): > I'm not sure which driver was installed during original > installation, but it seems as during the installation the xorg.conf > was not created and therefore X not working. if you picked the desktop task, you probably got the xserver-xorg-{input,video}-all packages installed, pulling all drivers. X works without any configuration in almost all cases now, so having no xorg.conf is not an actual issue, and should not lead to such issues. > I could probably do a dpkg-reconfigure style commands to see what > actually fails if you can't figure it out from the logs I've > attached. I've provided the xorg.0.log and xorg.0.log.old so > hopefully that has some info on it. That doesn't exactly tell us what happened before you tried the nvidia/vesa dance. That vesa doesn't work is “normal”, since it detects Kernel ModeSetting (KMS). Not sure how to disable it for nouveau, but you could try replacing vesa with “fbdev” in your xorg.conf for now (and make sure xserver-xorg-video-fbdev is installed). Please also note that installing nvidia stuff makes our life harder… (it diverts some libraries/files). KiBi. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#54640: marked as done (xdm: should parse /etc/inittab to see what VT to start local servers on)
Your message dated Sun, 6 Mar 2011 00:24:09 +0100 with message-id <20110305232409.gb21...@debian.org> and subject line Re: Bug#54640: wishlist: defaulting to a given tty can conflict with user changed inittab settings has caused the Debian Bug report #54640, regarding xdm: should parse /etc/inittab to see what VT to start local servers on to be marked as done. This means that you claim that the problem has been dealt with. If this is not the case it is now your responsibility to reopen the Bug report if necessary, and/or fix the problem forthwith. (NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what this message is talking about, this may indicate a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact ow...@bugs.debian.org immediately.) -- 54640: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=54640 Debian Bug Tracking System Contact ow...@bugs.debian.org with problems --- Begin Message --- Package: xdm Version: 3.3.5-2 Severity: wishlist I was running xdm for a long time with several more vc's (added in /etc/inittab on ttys through tty10), and suddenly around the time of the package split my machine would lock on boot. We eventually traced it to the conflicting tty which had suddenly become specified as tty7 instead of the default "next available" it had previously used. I request that there be some interaction - either with xdm reading the /etc/inittab file, or asking the person installing it what tty it should use. It's not a perfect solution, because the configuration is not all in one place. If i were to forget about the xdm setting, and go add a virtual console on tty12, i would have the same problem i mentioned earlier. The freeze part of the problem can be fixed by telnetting in and issuing the command /etc/init.d/xdm stop. The problem itself takes configuration file changing. Also, the included changed files may not all have changed - i did for a while have one of the "xdm themes" running, and after i realized it was causing me to be unable to return to a text mode after exiting xdm (and the reset and whatever scripts run), i replaced the relevant files with my pre-xdm-theme copy. The only obviously relevant change is in the Xservers file. -m -- System Information Debian Release: potato Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux zen 2.2.13 #1 SMP Mon Nov 29 14:00:11 CST 1999 i686 Versions of packages xdm depends on: ii cpp 1:2.95.2-4 The GNU C preprocessor. ii libc6 2.1.2-11 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii xlib6g3.3.5-2shared libraries required by X cli -- Configuration Files: /etc/X11/xdm/Xaccess changed: * #any host can get a login window * CHOOSER BROADCAST #any indirect host can get a chooser /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers changed: :0 local /usr/bin/X11/X vt12 -dpi 120 /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0 [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0' /etc/X11/xdm/Xstartup changed: if grep -qs ^ignore-nologin /etc/X11/xdm/xdm.options; then if [ -f /etc/nologin ]; then if [ -x /usr/bin/X11/xmessage ]; then xmessage -file /etc/nologin -geometry 640x480 fi fi elif [ -f /etc/nologin ]; then if [ -x /usr/bin/X11/xmessage ]; then xmessage -file /etc/nologin -geometry 640x480 fi exit 1 fi if grep -qs ^use-sessreg /etc/X11/xdm/xdm.options; then exec sessreg -a -l $DISPLAY -u /var/run/utmp -x /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers $USER # NOTREACHED fi exit 0 /etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config changed: ! /etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config ! ! resources specific to xdm itself DisplayManager.authDir: /var/state/xdm DisplayManager.errorLogFile:/var/log/xdm.log DisplayManager.pidFile: /var/run/xdm.pid DisplayManager.keyFile: /etc/X11/xdm/xdm-keys DisplayManager.servers: /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers DisplayManager.accessFile: /etc/X11/xdm/Xaccess DisplayManager._0.authorize:true DisplayManager._0.resources:/etc/X11/xdm/Xresources_0 DisplayManager._0.setup:/etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0 DisplayManager._0.startup: /etc/X11/xdm/Xstartup_0 DisplayManager._0.reset:/etc/X11/xdm/Xreset_0 DisplayManager*resources: /etc/X11/xdm/Xresources DisplayManager*setup: /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup DisplayManager*startup: /etc/X11/xdm/Xstartup DisplayManager*reset: /etc/X11/xdm/Xreset DisplayManager*session: /etc/X11/Xsession DisplayManager*userPath: /usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/games DisplayManager*systemPath: /usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11 --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- Cyril Brulebois (06/03/2011): > (better late than never?) The only > obviously relevant change is in the Xservers file. well, as seen with gdm, picking a VT can be sooo wrongly implemented that it's probably a better idea to put a comment on the last line of your inittab file, pointing to /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers If you disagree, feel free to discuss that in an upstream bug: http://bugs.freedesktop.org/ Product xorg, component App/xdm. Bug#616485: libgl1-mesa-dri/radeon: [amd64] iceweasel segfault from flashplugin-nonfree inside libgl-mesa-*
Hi, Yann Dirson (05/03/2011): > Still crashes, even after restart X (for the 3rd backtrace here > only), but different traces: […] thanks. > Ah, so that's planned for 7.10-5 or so ? But then 7.10-2 would have > made things better, if I understand well. Yep, although it might be 7.10.1-1 in experimental instead (hopefully, 7.10-4 will move to testing, and we'll upload that r600g→r600c switch to sid through 7.10.1-*). > I also note that I still have the old 7.7.1 glu packages. Not being > sure about the effect of any mismatch here... I don't think it matters, but all those packages scare the hell out of me… > Should I try to downgrade any other packages ? Or to another > specific version ? You might want to try 7.10.1 when it shows up in experimental, or try a local build from master: http://pkg-xorg.alioth.debian.org/howto/build-mesa.html I don't think it would hurt to report a bug upstream (product Mesa): http://bugs.freedesktop.org/ but they'll likely ask you to try 7.10.1 at least. 7.10.1 is on my weekend's TODO list, but mesa's a beast to build, so unexpected tiny glitches can take hours. Bug#616604: xserver-xorg: [grave]X does not working for nvidia 3100M / Dell latitude e6510
tag 616604 - d-i thanks (Not related to d-i AFAICT.) Hi, Lukasz Szybalski (05/03/2011): > Package: xserver-xorg > Version: 1:7.5+8 > Severity: normal > While installing a new debian stable squeezy on brand new dell > latitude E6510 which has nvidia 3100, the xserver is broken and not > working. As soon as system boots, after grub, the screen becomes > blank and you can only see "_ _ _ _ " passing by. Trying to switch > to different terminal does not display anything. ctrl + alt +F4. I guess that installing the system worked fine, so fbdev was doing the job. And the initial issue only happened on the first boot of the freshly-installed system, using the nouveau driver, correct? What followed (installing nvidia to actually use vesa) is a bit confusing, I'm putting Sven (maintainer of the nouveau — not nvidia — driver) in copy since he might know better what failed after the installation. Bug#79228: marked as done (xlibs-static-dev: [libxf86dga] atexit functions don't work after XF86DGAGetVideo())

Please contact ow...@bugs.debian.org immediately.) -- 79228: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=79228 Debian Bug Tracking System Contact ow...@bugs.debian.org with problems --- Begin Message --- Package: xlib6g-dev Version: 3.3.6-11 This deals with the XFree86-DGA X extension's XF86DGAGetVideo function in /hdb1/usr/X11R6/lib/libXxf86dga.a and functions set to run when the program is exiting using atexit. Any atexit function set up before a call to XF86DGAGetVideo will not run on exit after the XF86DGAGetVideo call. However, any functions set up with atexit after the XF86DGAGetVideo call will run normally. If a program exits after XF86DGAGetVideo has been called it will print the message "video memory protecting" at the end. This happens regardless of whether DGA mode was ever entered. That message is printed once even if XF86DGAGetVideo is called multiple times. For an atexit function to work in this case atexit must be used after the last XF86DGAGetVideo call. So basically, it seems that XF86DGAGetVideo installs some function using the atexit mechanism. Either that function causes an immediate exit or it is installed in such a way that the list of functions to run at exit is corrupted. Clearly XF86DGAGetVideo is doing something wrong. I don't think it should even install a function to run at exit. It would be more logical for XF86DGADirectVideo to install such a function because XF86DGAGetVideo just gets some information and XF86DGADirectVideo actually starts DGA mode. It is easy to investigate this behaviour. Just get the source to the XFree86-DGA demonstration client, add some function and put atexit calls in various locations. The demonstration client is /usr/X11R6/bin/dga in package xbase-clients. Oh, and BTW. my gcc package version is 2.95.2-13. I don't think this is compiler-related, but who knows. --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- Hi, Boris Gjenero (09/12/2000): > This deals with the XFree86-DGA X extension's XF86DGAGetVideo > function in /hdb1/usr/X11R6/lib/libXxf86dga.a and functions set to > run when the program is exiting using atexit. > > Any atexit function set up before a call to XF86DGAGetVideo will not > run on exit after the XF86DGAGetVideo call. The default is ``false'' meaning they are discarded. Note that allowing such events creates a very large security hole. This last sentence is false. Honouring synthetic events could only be a problem if another application on your X display was not trusted. However, other applications on your X display can already: * Send mouse and keyboard events to your window manager, Emacs, etc. to instruct them to do whatever they want. * Use the Tk `send' mechanism to take control of any Tcl program connected to the display. * Spy on (nearly) all keystrokes, including passwords. * Reconfigure X resources stored in the X server to change the startup behaviour of nearly every traditional X program, including xterm. * Use the Xt protocol extensions to reconfigure an xterm via the X server so that it allows synthetic events and then send appropriate events. (This is easy to do interactively with `editres'.) So if untrusted applications are connected to your X server you are thoroughly doomed anyway. There is no point in xterm disabling a piece of useful functionality (I already have at least one useful program in development which depends on XSendEvent). The default for this option should be changed to `true', and the manual corrected.
