Package: xorg
Version: 1:7.4+1
Severity: normal

Hi there. I'm not sure if this is an xorg issue precisely, but it
seems to be the best place to post this.

I use a PS2 mouse, connected to a KVM switch (or more precisely, a USB
mouse, with a USB->PS2 adaptor, connected to a KVM switch that only
has PS2 connections).

When I switch away from X and back again, the mouse frequently becomes
completely unresponsive. If I stop and start X (/etc/init.d/dkm
restart), the mouse still doesn't work. If I try witching between
various Linux boxes on the KVM switch, the mouse still does not work.

However, as soon as I change over to a Windows XP machine (on the user
login screen), the mouse starts working (in Windows XP) in a few
seconds. Then when I switch back to KDE, the mouse has resumed
working.

Since I need to use the KVM switch fairly often, I mainly use the XP
box as a way to get my mouse working again in Linux.

What the above suggests, is that the XP login screen has some kind of
special logic which somehow resets either the KVM's PS2 internals, or
the mouse itself (I don't really understand how this is possible).

Is there something I can do with the X server to do a similar "Force
PS2 mouse reset", like Windows XP does automatically?

Thanks,

David.

OK, using that version to close.

Bug#541388: same problem with latest xserver-xorg

2011-03-08 Thread Vincent Lefevre
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.6+4
Followup-For: Bug #541388

Same problem with my xmodmap settings.

Note: I've just upgraded my machine. I was previously using the
nVidia drivers (because of bug 535241, which no longer occurs
after the upgrade), and IIRC, I didn't have any such problem.

Package: gdm3
Version: 2.30.5-6
Severity: important

This is a HP laptop with an ATI RS690 card (with linux-firmware-nonfree
installed). I use the user-switching greeter a lot. When switching between
users that have no passwords (passwordless login enabled), everything works OK.
When I select the account that is password-protected and enter the password,
the desktop with its icons appears to load, but is actually locked up: mouse
and keyboard don't work, and the screen starts getting brighter and brighter
until everything is just a whitish blur. Alt-SysRq REISUB doesn't work, I have
to press the power down button.

A strange workaround seems to work occasionally, but not always: if I log into
all the passwordless accounts first, and log into the password-protected
account last, I can then switch between users normally.

Bug#613363: [SOLVED]

2011-03-08 Thread susulic
Sorry to have bothered you. As it turned out, it was all my fault.
There was a file "fglrx-driver.conf" in /etc/modprobe.d, containing the
line

blacklist radeon

That prevented the radeon module from being loaded before X, resulting
in the reported weird behavior. The "fglrx-driver.conf" was probably
left over from my earlier attempt at installing the fglrx driver. Now,
after having purged the file, the radeon module gets loaded in time and
everything works without a glitch: user switching, VT switching and all.

Sorry for the noise. Will think twice the next time before I file a bug
report. Please close this bug and thanks for your valuable time!

Aleksa

Package: xserver-xorg-video-siliconmotion
Version: 1:1.7.1-1
Severity: important

I have to use the fbdev driver in order to get the X server to start -- the
siliconmotion driver appears to segfault. I have also tried different NoAccel
and UseFBDev settings, but got the same result.

This is on a Gdium Liberty netbook.

still have some of my old hacks too.

hello,

for an Sun Type 6 USB (euro) keyboard with german layout the LSGT key
(with < > | ) is not working at all. The key is not recognized, xev
only shows the keycode 94 but no name for the key.

the following patch made this key usable. The definition for LSGT should
probably go into symbols/sun_vndr/de, but i could not get it working
there. Maybe the are some other references missing, therefor i have
included it into the us symbols.

Stefan Seide

FYI, gdm3 is different from gdm or xdm. It defines its own $XAUTHORITY,
so that if the value is lost (like it is with xterm + the buggy libxt),
then one can no longer start X applications. One cannot even guess what
the $XAUTHORITY value was, since the directory is not readable.

> you can use xauth it is simple to use

It is not possible to use it, as xauth needs to know the location of
the X authority file, which is precisely the information that has been
lost.

Bug#616389: xserver-xorg-video-radeon: Crashes when closing graphical VT ("(EE) RADEON(0): failed to set mode: Permission denied")

2011-03-08 Thread Thue Janus Kristensen
Thanks to the gdb guru :).

With both drmDropMaster breakpointed in the second server, and drmSetMaster
breakpointed in the first server, drmDropMaster is called first in the
second server, and the first server doesn't reach drmSetMaster until after I
continue the second server from the drmDropMaster breakpoint. No crash.

With only drmSetMaster breakpointed in the first server, but the second
server still running with gdb attached for consistency, there is no crash
when I continue the first server from the drmSetMaster breakpoint.

With both servers running inside gdb, but no breakpoints, it crashes.

Yes, you want 'handle SIGPIPE nostop noprint' in gdb.

Bug#616389: xserver-xorg-video-radeon: Crashes when closing graphical VT ("(EE) RADEON(0): failed to set mode: Permission denied")

2011-03-08 Thread Thue Janus Kristensen
I just tried, and with a gdb attached to both processes, there is no crash.
I had to *continue* over some SIGPIPE etc, but I assume that is normal.

So I assume that the problem is some kind of race condition? As I said, it
is 100% reproducible until I tried it in gdb :).

Bug#617208: never mind

I didn't see your doing this from a gdm desktop. NEVER MIND.

Vincent Lefevre wrote:

FYI, libxt/1:1.1.0-1 also breaks xterm: XAUTHORITY is removed from the
environment, meaning that I can no longer start X applications from
xterm when gdm3 is used. As libxt/1:1.1.0-2 fixes the problem (which
appeared with the upgrade to libxt/1:1.1.0-1) and other terminals
didn't have any problem, I assume this is the same bug.

2011-03-08 Thread John D. Hendrickson and Sara Darnell

hi I wrote www.sourceforge.net/projects/xdm-options/

one reason I've used xdm for so long is that having my environment in
xterm was more important to me than how X got started

I think the C-coded display managers out there don't bother with
/etc/profile or ~/.profile like a login should - but I don't know.

by the way XAUTHORITY may not be an export when you think it is - and
maybe it shouldn't be (reasons omitted)

you can use xauth it is simple to use

Actually, not just XAUTHORITY, as $PATH was affected too
("xterm -e some_command" started by fvwm output an error
message saying that some_command couldn't be found), and
I suspect that the whole environment was removed or something
similar.

I forgot to upload 2:2.14.901-1+exp1 (been running it for a while),
please try it when it reaches your mirror. 2:2.14.901-1 will probably
not hit sid until X migrates to testing. See 3rd point of:

Hi,

(Note the bug report is actually based on data from experimental +exp2
version plus everything to satisfy dependencies, bug the bug first
showed up on sid. squeeze works as expected.)

On this notebook with 1024x600 internal screen, attaching the projector
suddenly only shows
+++
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 600, maximum 4096 x 4096

whereas earlier versions have offered more possible resolution on VGA1
(same projector, same cable, same laptop), amongst them the (IIRC)
1344x768 which is the native resolution of the projector.

This is particularly annoying because, as you can see, 1024x768 is a
3:4, so watching 9:16 or similar movies is now near impossible without
rescaling the movie both in vlc and in the projector (with noticeable
degradation in quality, and also, I'm just feeling major silliness...)
848x480 may be 9:16 but watching a movie on a large screen with only 480
lines is painful...

This has worked just fine for ages, so losing this is really a pity.

Kernel release does not come into it, but I'm not sure if it was the
upgrade of xserver-xorg-video-intel or if it was some other X related
packges that did it.

thanks for caring about X !

I had the crash only once, I would have to check how easily I can
reproduce the problem. OTOH I can easily use ssh access to check,
once I have reproduced the issue. I just have so many issues to
run after :)

Stay tuned

Bug#594684: xserver-xorg-video-siliconmotion: exactly how the sarea patch worked for me

2011-03-08 Thread Robert Millan
tags 594684 patch
thanks

Hi,

I can confirm that 01_mips-sarea.diff worked:

- when applied in -core 1.7.7-11
- in combination with -siliconmotion 1:1.7.3-2 (unpatched)

It required specific settings in xorg.conf as Jason said, however,
not all the options provided by Jason were necessary. I reduced
the settings through trial and error and am now using the attached
xorg.conf, which works fine for me.

+
+Compositing managers and desktop environments may have UI elements in
+particular screen locations such that for a single-headed display they
+correspond to easy targets according to Fitt's Law, for example, the top
+left corner. For a multi-headed environment these corners should still be
+semi-impermeable. Pointer barriers allow the application to define
+additional constraint on cursor motion so that these areas behave as
+expected even in the face of multiple displays.
+
+Absolute positioning devices like touchscreens do not obey pointer barriers.
+There's no advantage to target acquisition to do so, since on a touchscreen
+all points are in some sense equally large, whereas for a relative
+positioning device the edges and corners are infinitely large.
+
+WarpPointer and similar requests do not obey pointer barriers, for
+essentially the same reason.

+ y1 == y2, but not both. The varying coordinates may be specified

I wasn't able to reproduce this but I didn't try very long. I guess
it'd be nice if you could try to apply the patch mentioned above,
getting rid of the one in debian/patches.

Bug#617208: Fails if started by init

2011-03-08 Thread Anthony L. Awtrey
Hi there,

This issue was originally reported against version 1:1.1.10-3. It was
reported fixed two days ago in version 1:1.1.0-2 which makes no sense to
me considering that oldstable is 1.1.8-5 and stable/unstable is
1.1.10-3. I'm still seeing this issue this morning. Thanks!

A yea, that ONE (missed it b/o package purged by now :(). But not in
either of xorg-docs_1:1.6-1 and xorg-docs-core_1:1.6-1, which seem to be
the most current ones.

And as I said the drm_i915 module is loaded with the 2.6.32-5-686
kernel, and the modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf entry is present as well,
X still 'finds no screens' and thus aborts.

Would be interesting if one of you guys could (from a remote login)
attach gdb to both X servers and check that the second X server calls
drmDropMaster() or dies before the first X server calls drmSetMaster().

I know your PowerBook was affected by the problem fixed by commit
b7d8cce5b558e0c0aa6898c9865356481598b46d ('drm/radeon/kms: MC vram map
needs to be >= pci aperture size'), which went into 2.6.37. Still no
better with that?

Apparently it went into 2.6.37, I didn't notice because it went into
different places in the code compared to the patch I had from you.

Actually, not just XAUTHORITY, as $PATH was affected too
("xterm -e some_command" started by fvwm output an error
message saying that some_command couldn't be found), and
I suspect that the whole environment was removed or something
similar.

FYI, libxt/1:1.1.0-1 also breaks xterm: XAUTHORITY is removed from the
environment, meaning that I can no longer start X applications from
xterm when gdm3 is used. As libxt/1:1.1.0-2 fixes the problem (which

didn't have any problem, I assume this is the same bug.
