Documentation: add Docbook external references support

When writing technical documentation, it is often necessary to cross
reference to other information. When that other information is not in the
current document, additional support is needed, namely .

A new feature with version 1.7 of xorg-sgml-doctools adds references to
other documents within or outside this package.

This patch adds technical support for this feature but does not change
the content of the documentation as seen by the end user.

Each book or article must generate a database containing the href
of sections that can be referred to from another document. This database
is installed in DATAROOTDIR/sgml/X11/dbs. There is a requirement that
the value of DATAROOTDIR for xorg-sgml-doctools and for the package
documentation is the same. This forms a virtual document tree.

This database is consulted by other documents while they are being generated
in order to fulfill the missing information for linking.
Refer to the xorg-sgml-doctools for further technical information.

x-x-input-synaptics on GNU/kFreeBSD

2011-04-05 Thread Cyril Brulebois
Hi,

could anyone with a desktop environment test the synaptics X input
driver please, and tell us how it goes? Replying with an X log
would be nice.

It builds fine on kfreebsd-* but I'd like to make sure it at least
works somewhere before considering adding it to x-x-input-all for
kfreebsd-*.

Thanks already!

Cross-references, libx11

2011-04-05 Thread Cyril Brulebois
Hi,

Gaetan has worked on making it possible to have crossreferences in X's
documentation; we've also discussed shipping XML files, which we
currently don't do (yet). I think a good summary would be:

  http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.freedesktop.xorg.devel/20537

I'll probably look into shipping those XML files in the upcoming weeks
(I don't think there's any kind of urgency).

As for libx11, I'm about to upload a new package with crossreferences
enabled at build-time, but without shipping those files yet. Just
writing this mail to say it's not an error. Switching libx11 to
--fail-missing to make sure we don't miss any new file is on my todo
as well.

KiBi.

Update on xkb-data(-udeb)

2011-04-05 Thread Cyril Brulebois
Hi,

as announced early and lately[1,2], I'm uploading xkb-data 2.1 to
unstable now.

 1. http://lists.debian.org/debian-x/2011/01/msg00817.html
 2. http://lists.debian.org/debian-x/2011/04/msg00091.html

xkb-data 2.2 was released recently[3] (and 2.2.1[4] quickly after that
to fix build issues), apparently with many changes on the descriptions
/ translations side.

 3. http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xorg-announce/2011-April/001634.html
 4. http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xorg-announce/2011-April/001638.html

Also, xkb-data now Breaks: older libx11-6. That's said to be
unsupported on the udeb side (like Conflicts), so I didn't add
anything to the udeb. It's probably unlikely to cause issues (there's
no partial upgrade to handle in d-i). Even more so since the needed
(1.4.3) version of libx11's been uploaded to sid, while this new
xkb-data will go to experimental instead. But I wanted to mention that
possible pitfall on this list anyway.

-
-Basic Installation
-==
-
- Briefly, the shell commands `./configure; make; make install' should
-configure, build, and install this package. The following
-more-detailed instructions are generic; see the `README' file for
-instructions specific to this package.
-
- The `configure' shell script attempts to guess correct values for
-various system-dependent variables used during compilation. It uses
-those values to create a `Makefile' in each directory of the package.
-It may also create one or more `.h' files containing system-dependent
-definitions. Finally, it creates a shell script `config.status' that
-you can run in the future to recreate the current configuration, and a
-file `config.log' containing compiler output (useful mainly for
-debugging `configure').
-
- It can also use an optional file (typically called `config.cache'
-and enabled with `--cache-file=config.cache' or simply `-C') that saves
-the results of its tests to speed up reconfiguring. Caching is
-disabled by default to prevent problems with accidental use of stale
-cache files.
-
- If you need to do unusual things to compile the package, please try
-to figure out how `configure' could check whether to do them, and mail
-diffs or instructions to the address given in the `README' so they can
-be considered for the next release. If you are using the cache, and at
-some point `config.cache' contains results you don't want to keep, you
-may remove or edit it.
-
- The file `configure.ac' (or `configure.in') is used to create
-`configure' by a program called `autoconf'. You need `configure.ac' if
-you want to change it or regenerate `configure' using a newer version
-of `autoconf'.
-
-The simplest way to compile this package is:
-
- 1. `cd' to the directory containing the package's source code and type
- `./configure' to configure the package for your system.
-
- Running `configure' might take a while. While running, it prints
- some messages telling which features it is checking for.
-
- 2. Type `make' to compile the package.
-
- 3. Optionally, type `make check' to run any self-tests that come with
- the package.
-
- 4. Type `make install' to install the programs and any data files and
- documentation.
-
- 5. You can remove the program binaries and object files from the
- source code directory by typing `make clean'. To also remove the
- files that `configure' created (so you can compile the package for
- a different kind of computer), type `make distclean'. There is
- also a `make maintainer-clean' target, but that is intended mainly
- for the package's developers. If you use it, you may have to get
- all sorts of other programs in order to regenerate files that came
- with the distribution.
-
- 6. Often, you can also type `make uninstall' to remove the installed
- files again.

Let me clarify. The slowness is present after waking up from suspend
OR if I boot up using vblank_mod=0.

It's always slow on resume...in any case. In fact, right now, I've
been probing the quad pipe message and it seems to vary. The last two
boots with 2.6.38-2 kernel lead to a reported number of 3. After the
resume the number remains 3:

$ dmesg | grep quad
[9.554083] [drm] radeon: 3 quad pipes, 1 z pipes initialized.
[ 173.492317] [drm] radeon: 3 quad pipes, 1 z pipes initialized.

But the slowness is still present and almost crippling...

Bug#620985: xserver-xorg-video-intel: [i915] X doesn't start with intel driver.

2011-04-05 Thread Hanno Becker

Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.13.0-6
Severity: important

*** Please type your report below this line ***

X doesn't start with intel driver in Squeeze; the logfile
is attached. In Lenny, things worked fine.

I installed squeeze via netinstall, no desktop environment
preinstalled. Afterwards, I installed xorg and wmii, and
altered the xorg.conf as shown below; in particular, the
device driver is set to intel. Trying to start X via
startx, the error shown below appeared. I also tried to
start X directly, with the same result.

The latter can't really be true like that, as the number of pipe quads
is only probed and printed at initialization and resume time.

So in the latter case, is it slow initially but becomes fast after
resume? :)

Using both vblank_mod=0 and SwapbuffersWait -> False, framerate drops
dramatically after resuming, causing a very unresponsive system. Even
sometimes when typing there is a noticeable delay between keystrokes
and actual text displayed.

I don't know if the quad pipe issue is related anymore:
$ dmesg | grep quad
[6.615793] [drm] radeon: 3 quad pipes, 1 z pipes initialized. (booting)
[ 386.543044] [drm] radeon: 3 quad pipes, 1 z pipes initialized.
(after resuming from suspend)

Sometimes it changes, sometimes it doesn't...
I would stick with current testing versions X, mesa and kernel (which
don't seem to have this issue), but my touchpad gets out of sync and
lags and it's just not usable...

I guess I'll wait for llvm to be enabled in gallium and try again..

So, this is rather strange. With a vanilla 2.6.37.6 kernel (using
debian config file to compile + two cpu customizations) the quad
number is generally reported as 3, but goes to 1 upon resuming from
suspend.

With kernel 2.6.38-2 from debian main, quad seems to be 1, but after
resuming it goes to 3.

gears is not a benchmark. It's highly CPU dependant.

Since you are using gallium make sure it is built with llvm support as
that is very important for asics without vertex hardware. You can
also disable tear-free buffer swaps by adding:
Option "SwapbuffersWait" "FALSE"
to the device section of your xorg.conf. That coupled with
vblank_mode=0 should give you maximum framerates at the expense of
tearing.

I've just checked this. Yes, it's slow when the number is reported as
1 (which happens both waking up from suspend, and when using
vblank_mod=0).

Thanks for looking into this.

The kernel radeon driver isn't consistently reporting the number of quad
pipes. Does the slowness correspond to the number being reported as 1?

Perhaps the original poster meant ACPI S3 mode and decided to put bug
here. Need to reassign either to radeon or to kernel.
