Bug#653029: xserver-xorg-video-r128: r128 Idle timed out, resetting engine... messages when starting x.org
Package: xserver-xorg-video-r128 Version: 6.8.1-5+b2 Severity: important Dear Maintainer, I had been succesfully running lenny (and before that Etch) on this computer and have now wiped my root partion (keeping the /home partition) and installed the 19th Dec 2011 Wheezy/testing weekly build. I initially installed without an X server. I've now got Internet access working giving the abilty for aptitude to download packages and have installed the X server and KDE. Now when I boot the computer, at the point that the X server should start, the screen changes to mainly white then freezes and the computer doesn't respond to the keyboard or mouse. The computer isn't completely locked as I'm running an ssh server and I can ssh into the computer. The problem is specific to the r128 driver as when I moved the ati_drv.so mach64_drv.so r128_drv.so and radeon_drv.so files out of /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers. The X server and KDE work (very slowly) using the VESA driver. I moved the files out instead of disabling the driver in xorg.conf as I appear not to have an xorg.conf file. There is a /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d directory which contains files 10-evdev.conf and 50-joystick.conf -- Package-specific info: X server symlink status: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Dec 22 19:24 /etc/X11/X -> /usr/bin/Xorg -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2048200 Dec 11 11:33 /usr/bin/Xorg VGA-compatible devices on PCI bus: -- 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc Rage 128 PF/PRO AGP 4x TMDS [1002:5046] /etc/X11/xorg.conf does not exist. /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d does not exist. (For example, can you use ctrl-alt-delete to reboot?) Please also check whether booting in "recovery mode" with xserver-xorg-video-intel installed works. If it does, please get "dmesg" output and output from /usr/share/bug/xserver-xorg-video-intel/script 3>&1 after booting and reproducing the problem.
