Helping folks with xrandr issues

2012-04-23 Thread Kai Hendry
Hi there,

What's good general advice for dealing with xrandr issues for end users?

I had a look at http://x.debian.net/
The search link on https://lists.debian.org/debian-x/ is pretty useless

I tried to help a user here:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/123953/
And I ended up pointing him to Intel's report bug page
http://intellinuxgraphics.org/how_to_report_bug.html which does seem
to be a really high barrier for entry for average Joe User.

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!msg/webc-users/0lTYXqQLkJw/it626uMsAk8J
is an nvidia issue (I think) on the Debian based distro I work on. I'm
not sure what actually power the nvidia hardware here, though the
package list can be found at:
http://download.webconverger.com/webc-12.3.txt

In these cases can I assume it's the video drivers fault if xrandr fails?

Any other hints to help debugging would be great. For example when I
switch to some modes in xrandr on some machines, the monitor just goes
black and then I'm not sure what to do next.

Thank you for any tips in advance,

Thanks for testing. Reassigning.

Roger et al: please feel free to lower severity or reassign as
appropriate, and if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to
ask. Thanks for your work to keep the base system working well in the
next release.

Aha! I only downgraded sysvinit and sysvinit-utils. With
initscripts=2.88dsf-22.1, keyboard and mouse are functional once again.

Whatever is wrong, it seems to originate in initscripts

Peculiar. I ran into similar symptoms (mouse and keyboard no longer
working in X after a very recent routine upgrade with the experimental
suite enabled), too. No udev upgrade involved. Downgrading sysvinit
and initscripts to the version in sid and rebooting got the mouse and

Can't seem to reproduce that.

Can you get a gdb backtrace with the xserver-xorg-video-radeon-dbg and
xserver-xorg-core-dbg packages installed?

Bug#666982: now crashes with EXAPixmaps off

2012-04-23 Thread Jérémy Lal
Since i added that option as a workaround,
X started crashing (no logs) since xserver-xorg-video-ati/1:6.14.4-2.

I could reliably reproduce a crash by opening the /network (forks) page
of any github project with chromium 18.

Disabling EXAPixmaps off solved the problem...

Bug#670156: xserver-xorg-core: input devices no longer detected

2012-04-23 Thread Brian Paterni
Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 2:1.11.4-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I can no longer use my keyboard/mouse after startx since X seems to no longer
detect input devices. I'm not sure exactly what package is responsible since
this started happening yesterday. Initially I was using a combination of
unstable/experimental X packages, but since I've downgraded to just unstable the
problem still persists.

As noted in bug #585642 my devices are also missing ID_INPUT attributes for some
reason.

Let me know if I can provide anything more.

Fix scoll increment for non-smooth scrolling (#46617)

Introduced in 2603ad69b997c999404ecc441e0d64ea2cc22018. Previously, the
delta was incremented by (actual delta/scroll dist), button clicks where
then sent while (delta-- >= 1).

After 2603ad69b997c999404ecc441e0d64ea2cc22018, the delta was
incremented by
the delta only, scroll dist was used as increment in the smooth
scrolling
information. On non-smooth-scrolling servers, the driver would now send
too many events. Restore the old behaviour by dividing by the scroll
distance before entering the button click loop.
