Hi there!

The title is a bit stronger: the overall installation works flawlessly,
but two major problems (Debian CD image and X11 configuration) are
show-stoppers.

Thx, bye,

Comments/Problems:

1) boot

I usually download a multi-arch CD image and this time I did the same
(daily built 20081001-10:45, d-i 20081001-09:05). However, while the
same multi-arch CD boots fine on i386 and amd64, on powerpc machines
   gives the following errors:

   - [G3] /pci@f20/mac-io@17/ata-4@18000/disk@1:2,/install/powerpc/vmlinux:
  Unknown or corrupt filesystem

   - [G4] /pci@f20/mac-io@17/ata-3@2/disk@0:2,/install/powerpc/vmlinux:
  Unknown or corrupt filesystem

   - [G5] /ht/pci@3/ata-6/disk@0:2,/install/powerpc/vmlinux:
  Unknown or corrupt filesystem

The same problem happens with two other daily built multi-arch
netinst CDs (20080923-22:19 and 20080921-10:03), but not with
powerpc-only netinst CD (daily built 20081001-10:35).

2) clock

The following happened also with etch and randomly, thus I don't think
it's Debian-related, but it could be a symptom of hardware problems
   (like empty battery).

Sometime, after the first reboot and at GNOME login, the system
complained that the date was wrong (still set to something like
1903). However, if I performed another installation after this
"buggy" one, there was no date error.

3) X.Org

This is the main problem: after the first reboot, X11 starts, but the
screen remains black. After investigation, to have a "working"
screen I needed a single xorg.conf option for the "Monitor" section,
   taken from etch's xorg.conf:

 HorizSync 60-60

However, the screen resolution is set to 1280x968, which is not
wrong, but the font size is too small. I've never used this iMac
with Apple software, but according to the Apple site [1] (and
Wikipedia as well [2]) the correct resolution should be 1024x768,
which is obtained with another single xorg.conf option in the
"Monitor" section, again taken from etch's xorg.conf:

 VertRefresh 75-117

I can provide X.Org log files from etch and lenny as well as perform
other tests or even installations: this is still a playing machine,
thus no need to be careful with it :-)

FWIW, just manually creating the lib*.so symlink in the "other"
directory usually works.

I have no idea what to describe... I'm used to start the machine with
a graphical prompt (gdm). if I use the ati Driver, the x server does
not start, the machine becomes unresponsive and all I can do is go to an
other machine, log remotely in, correct the Driver line to "fbdev", ...,
then I did not understand if I have to wait (that gdm respawns the login)
or if I have to kill the half started and totally unusable X server.

the first time the fbdev driver starts up after ati it is also not usable,
but I bet this to be caused by problems left by the ati driver...

this problem appeared after a new install. on the same machine but with
an other hard disk I was using the ati driver... after the reinstallation
(first days of january) I could not use ati any more and had to go back
to fbdev (where bug 327497 had luckly been solved...)

When ever I start the xserver, the power button on the iMac changes from Green
to Orange, indicating that the monitor has entered powersave mode.

If I change to a linuxterm the monitor turns on. If I switch back from the
linux term to the X session the monitor turns off again.

This does not seem to be caused by excessive screen resolution. As shown below,
this occurs even if I limit the res to 640x480.

This bug occurs in (a prerelease of the) Xubuntu Karmic Koala livecd *. However
it does not appear to occur on the Dapper Drake.

* I mentioned this in launchpad bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xubuntu-meta/+bug/447735
However, since xubuntu wouldn't even give me a terminal I could not diagnose
this further on Xubuntu.

I also get the following error
   FATAL: Module mach64 not found.
However installing mach64.ko and drm.ko as described here
   http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mach64
does not help. To ensure compatibility with mach64.ko I also tried switching
back to the Lenny kernel (The above link describes an incompatibility between
mach64 and some 2.6.27 and later kernels),
but I got the same problem.

Shall I install Lenny over Squeeze and report whether this fixes the problem?

Bug#689068: Still not fixed?

2016-04-13 Thread Riot
Why is this still not fixed? When building the same packages for 64bit or
32bit, I am having to remove and reinstall libxi-dev between each build,
which is ridiculous.

Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.2-5
Severity: important

After the latest Xorg upgrades, I can no longer use X11 on my
PowerBook G4 with ATI Technologies Inc Rage Mobility M3 AGP 2x rev 2:
the mode 1152x768 (86.0 MHz, 56.0 kHz, 70.0 Hz) can no longer be
selected. Instead, I get 1024x768 with display problems (some lines
are shifted and the display is not stable -- I assume that the LCD
doesn't support the mode). Note that my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file has
not changed.

I can see that the log file is include below. I've attached the
previous log file (obtained when I started the old Xorg version
on 2007-04-12, which was working) and the diff.

Package: xserver-xorg-video-r128
Version: 6.8.1-3
Severity: normal

I'm using TV as display and when I try to watch videos using XVideo it shows
only the top half of the video. Although it still uses the same space. This
didn't happend with regular (non-interlaced) display. Also this doesn't happen
when I use x11 as output on Mplayer or Mythtv.
This is making my setup unusable with Mythtv, because it can't display properly
video with any other output-plugin. They all cause dropped frames (at least
that's what it looks like).

I found an old bug report that had this fixed:
