I've tried setting nomodeset in grub - the system boots, but after entering my credentials its showing only the gnome background image. I'm sorry if the cause is not in the driver, and will be grateful for any suggestions or directions where to look for the issue. Cheers, Stan

This package has not seen "a recent update" (in fact, it has not been changed for 9 months), and your Xorg.1.log shows that X does not even try to load the nouveau driver. Cheers, Sven

Making this bug RC so this doesn't go into testing as-is. I've got a fix lined up to fix this, just need to get around to actually sending it out. Thanks for the report, Julien

Thanks! That fixed my install. These leftover packages just happen, Debian unstable is too good to survive for years and years just doing "apt-get dist-upgrade" and "apt-get autoremove" without any reinstalls, even when moving to new hardware I just restore a backup of the older machine there ;) c'ya sven-haegar -- Three may keep a secret, if two of them are dead. - Ben F.
Bug#894211: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau: Screen frozen every few seconds for less than a second
Package: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau Version: 1:1.0.15-2 Severity: important Dear Maintainer, After a recent update the system become unusable. Every few seconds it's frozen for less than a second.
