Bug#245249:
No problem. It was also affecting Knoppix and Kanotix and would have been a shame if somebody popped a bootable CD in only to see that Linux didn't even display correctly :0 You wrote: > On Wed, Apr 28, 2004 at 03:58:31AM -0700, CE wrote: > > I recieved an e-mail from Thomas Winischhofer regarding this > > problem. Bug#245249:
I recieved an e-mail from Thomas Winischhofer regarding this problem. After trying a few things X was working once again, but with an updated sis_drv.o file from his site. I've pasted in the e-mail below. In short the solution seems to be to incorporate Thomas' updated driver. I'll also respond with the output file requested. I am "the X team" ;) Debian ships a snapshot of the driver from last June. Seems that this snapshot was buggy. Anyway, I think Debian's X packager has an update of the SiS driver on his todo-list anyway. Nice to hear that the current driver works, however. Thomas
Bug#245249: xserver-xfree86: [sis] screen "melt" with SiS 630ST and 4.3.0-7
Subject: xserver-xfree86: [sis] screen "melt" with SiS 630ST and 4.3.0-7 Package: xserver-xfree86 Version: 4.3.0-7 Severity: important The recently updated package renders X unusable with the SiS 630ST. The screen will "melt" (going from black to white then fading) upon starting X. The effect is rather pretty but renders X unusable. X is able to be killed but no useful entries are left in /var/log/XFree86.0.log. The problem started with upgrading from 4.3.0-0ds4. X works fine with that release but newer packages seem to reintroduce a variant of a problem that Thomas Winischhofer http://www.winischhofer.net/linuxsisvga.shtml had fixed in the drivers. I can provide additional details if needed. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.4.25 Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US -- Machine Specs: http://desknote.net/dn/spec.cfm?modID=104 -- lspci relevant listing: :01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 630/730 PCI/AGP VGA Display Adapter (rev 31)
