Bug#1018176: xorg process leaks file descriptors until it's no longer functional

2022-08-26 Thread Carsten Pfeiffer
Package: xorg
Version: 1:7.7+23
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

since around 2022-08-10 I've noticed that over time the number of open file
descriptors of the xorg process increases to near the process's limit of 1024.
This happens about once per day, where the computer is on around 9h and put to
standby once or twice per day.

About every minute, there are two further open files. Looking at
/proc/pid_of_xorg/fd/ I see that file descriptors
like these are added all the time:

lrwx-- 1 root root 64 26. Aug 15:05 1000 -> /memfd:xshmfence (deleted)
lrwx-- 1 root root 64 26. Aug 15:05 1001 -> /memfd:xshmfence (deleted)
lrwx-- 1 root root 64 26. Aug 15:05 1002 -> /memfd:xshmfence (deleted)
lrwx-- 1 root root 64 26. Aug 15:05 1003 -> /memfd:xshmfence (deleted)
lrwx-- 1 root root 64 26. Aug 15:05 1004 -> /memfd:xshmfence (deleted)
lrwx-- 1 root root 64 26. Aug 15:05 1005 -> /memfd:xshmfence (deleted)
lrwx-- 1 root root 64 26. Aug 15:05 1006 -> /memfd:xshmfence (deleted)
lrwx-- 1 root root 64 26. Aug 15:05 1007 -> /memfd:xshmfence (deleted)

At some point, not exactly when the limit of 1024 is reached (or at least I
couldn't measure it) the desktop stops mapping new windows. The currently
visible application still works and accepts mouse clicks and keyboard events,
but switching to a different running application, or new application, has no
effect.

Environment:
- Debian sid
- KDE Plasma
- Chromium
- some electron apps
- Terminals
- eclipse

An external display is hooked up to an HDMI port of an attached USB3 dock.

Is there any way to find out what's causing this? Maybe it's not even a bug in
xorg, but an application leaking connections? How could I find out which this
might be?

Thanks a lot!

Bug#520167: [xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd] icons are garbled

2009-03-17 Thread Carsten Pfeiffer
Thanks for the quick reply, and for noticing my old xserver version.

I downgrade to those from unstable:

$ dpkg -l xserver-xorg-video-radeon* xserver-xorg-core xserver-xorg | grep ^ii
ii  xserver-xorg 1:7.3+18

the X.Org X server
ii  xserver-xorg-core2:1.4.2-11

Xorg X server - core server
ii  xserver-xorg-video-radeon1:6.9.0-1+lenny4

X.Org X server -- ATI Radeon display driver
ii  xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd  1.2.1-2

X.Org X server -- AMD/ATI r5xx, r6xx display

With my previous xorg.conf and using the radeon (not hd) driver, the icons
were still garbled. Removing my xorg.conf caused the radeonhd driver to be
used, and now the icons are all ok.

Let me know if you want me to perform further tests with the radeon driver.

Thanks,
Carsten

I'm also having problems with xrandr.

1) I use a laptop without an external display connected
2) I suspend to disk
3) I plug the laptop into a docking station with an LCD connected
4) I wake up the laptop
= the laptop display shows the correct output
5) I issue xrandr --auto
= the external LCD is activated, but shows completely wrong colours (lots
of pink instead of white for example)

OK, this is a leftover from a previous xvfb-run session. Every failing

 There's the likely explanation. Is xfonts-base installed?

Aha, good catch! No, it's not installed. Works perfectly now. Should that
become a dependency for xvfb, perhaps?

Bug#460866: can't open display

2008-01-15 Thread Carsten Pfeiffer
Package: xvfb
Version: 2:1.1.1-21etch1

xvfb in etch simply doesn't work for me. Whatever X-client I start with
xvfb-run, it cannot connect to the DISPLAY. E.g.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~ $ xvfb-run xterm
xterm Xt error: Can't open display: :99
/usr/bin/xvfb-run: line 158: kill: (4889) - Kein passender Prozess gefunden

This happens not only with the default display 99, but also when I explicitly
specify e.g. a lower display number.

xvfb from testing works perfectly, though.

Cheers,
Carsten

 problem very recently? If not, I will close this bug in the next weeks.

unfortunately nothing has changed wrt this bug. My MGA G550 is unusable
without the proprietary mga_hal module (which is quite a problem as Matrox
support for this is quite low, e.g. the last released driver is for Xorg 7.0

I'm on unstable with xorg 7.1.0-10 and the buggy behavior is still there.

2006-04-17 Thread Carsten Pfeiffer
I just upgraded to Xorg 7.0 in unstable and X still doesn't work without
mga_hal.

Using the Option

Option  UseFBDev  true

however, makes it work!

So as long as Matrox doesn't supply a new mga_hal that works with Xorg 6.8.2
and nobody fixes mga_drv, you can use fbdev to get an X session.

Bug#175911: problem persists (or reappeared)

2006-01-10 Thread Carsten Pfeiffer
With current Xorg 6.9 I'm experiencing similar problems. Xorg.0.log says

(**) (MGA(0): *Default mode 1280x1024: 108.0 MHz, 64 kHz, 60.0. Hz
(II) MGA80): Modeline 1280x1024 108.00 1280 1328 1440 1688 1024 1024 1028
1066 +hsync +vsync

but my TFT receives 31,3 kHz and 29,3 Hz.

Maybe I'm only experiencing this now, because the binary-only driver from
Matrox is not available for Xorg 6.9, so the plain Xorg driver is used.

This happens with both DVI and analog connection.

Thanks,
Carsten

Bug#345436: xlibs: Keyboard not working properly after upgrade to 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1

2006-01-05 Thread Carsten Pfeiffer
Hi,

I also have a problem with the keyboard in X, namely I cannot produce accented
characters like à with dead keys. It happens with both the keyboard and the
kbd driver.

I found the cause to be rooted in the following message in X log:

expected keysym, got dead_diaresis: line 143 of pc/de
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
 Warning: Type ONE_LEVEL has 1 levels, but RALT has 2 symbols
   Ignoring extra symbols
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server

I could fix both the error message and the problems with dead keys by editing
/etc/X11/xkb/symbols/level3
and changing

  key RALT {
type[Group1]=ONE_LEVEL,

to

  key RALT {
type[Group1]=TWO_LEVEL,

I think the problem already appeared in some version of xorg 6.8.2, but I
don't know the exact time, as I don't use accented characters all that often.

Thanks,
Carsten
