Bug#888211: Apparently not kernel related

2018-01-30 Thread Chris Chiappa
Reproduced on:

Linux cchiappa-lnx 4.13.0-1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.13.13-1 (2017-11-16) x86_64
GNU/Linux
Linux cchiappa-lnx 4.12.0-1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.12.6-1 (2017-08-12) x86_64
GNU/Linux

so presumably not kernel related, will investigate downgrading xorg
components

Bug#888211: 4.14.2 afflicted

2018-01-26 Thread Chris Chiappa
Just had the hang on:

Linux cchiappa-lnx 4.14.0-1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.14.2-1 (2017-11-30) x86_64

Bug#888211: xserver-xorg-video-intel: Frequent hangs with kernel 4.14.13-1 and i915 chipset

2018-01-23 Thread Chris Chiappa
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.99.917+git20171229-1
Severity: normal

On Friday I did an upgrade and have been having frequent hangs since:

[Tue Jan 23 16:12:23 2018] i915 :00:02.0: Resetting rcs0 after gpu hang
[Tue Jan 23 16:12:26 2018] asynchronous wait on fence i915:Xorg[4666]/1:a36f8

[Tue Jan 23 16:12:26 2018] asynchronous wait on fence i915:Xorg[4666]/1:a36f8

[Tue Jan 23 16:13:01 2018] i915 :00:02.0: Resetting rcs0 after gpu hang

After this, X eventually dies and I can restart it. The upgrade
definitely moved to linux-image-4.14.0-3-amd64 (probably from
linux-image-4.14.0-1-amd64, but maybe earlier?) and might also have
upgraded me to 2:2.99.917+git20171229-1 .

I don't see any new bugs in the bug system which look like this, but
I'm not sure if this is the right package to be reporting against.
Google turns up random stuff like
https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/55629 and
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/401746/drm-i915-resetting-chip-after-gpu-hang
but they don't seem to correspond to the versions which have induced
problems for me.

Bug#666982: Same problem

2012-04-13 Thread Chris Chiappa
The binaries at http://people.debian.org/~kibi/packages/xorg-47266
seem to make the problem much worse for me - rather than eventual
corruptime, mostly in iceweasel, I get missing fonts in
gnome-terminals and the like (xterm seems unaffected). I have a
Radeon 4350-based card, but I accidently just nuked the log files from
the test binaries...I can get a new set on Monday if that would be
helpful.

I went back to the flaky keyboard a couple of months ago and haven't
experienced any crashes (I'm tracking unstable), so it's probably safe
to assume the bug is fixed.

Thanks!

Well, as a first pass it doesn't seem like a bad idea to file the bug
against the package whose upgrade caused the problem, please feel free
to reassign.

Thanks, I think when I got this card radeon wouldn't do 2D accel but
radeonhd did, so I went with that one. radeon seems to be working
fine now so I'll switch to that. If XSF considers radeonhd deprecated
a note to that effect might be worthwhile, nothing in the apt
description nor on the radeonhd X.org wiki page implies that to
someone who doesn't follow the development.

After 15 years of slow X<->text mode switching, the fast KMS support
is pretty impressive!

Bug#527083: xkb as well...

2009-05-07 Thread Chris Chiappa
Perhaps unsurprisingly, using xkb exhibits the same issue...

$ setxkbmap -option ctrl:nocaps
$ setxkbmap -print
xkb_keymap {
xkb_keycodes  { include "evdev+aliases(qwerty)" };
xkb_types { include "complete"  };
xkb_compat{ include "complete"  };
xkb_symbols   { include "pc+us+inet(evdev)+ctrl(nocaps)"};
xkb_geometry  { include "pc(pc101)" };
};
..
$ setxkbmap -print
xkb_keymap {
xkb_keycodes  { include "evdev+aliases(qwerty)" };
xkb_types { include "complete"  };
xkb_compat{ include "complete"  };
xkb_symbols   { include "pc+us+inet(evdev)" };
xkb_geometry  { include "pc(pc101)" };
};

Oddly, unplugging and replugging the keyboard doesn't exhibit this behavior
and I don't see any messages about USB devices being fiddled.

Bug#527083: xserver-xorg-input-evdev: Loses xmodmap mappings

2009-05-05 Thread Chris Chiappa
Package: xserver-xorg-input-evdev
Version: 1:2.2.2-1
Severity: normal

I don't know if this is the right package to file against, but it
seems the most likely. When I start X I run xmodmap to do a bit
of setup:

remove Lock = Caps_Lock
keysym Caps_Lock = Control_L
add Lock = Caps_Lock
add Control = Control_L
keysym Super_R = XF86Back
keysym Menu = XF86Forward

(Maps caps lock to control, sets the silly windows keys to
go forwards and backwards in Firefox)
Since a recent dist-upgrade (I'm not sure exactly which - I
dist-upgrade regularly but often don't restart X), I'm finding
that I frequently lost these mappings. Additionally, when I try
to rerun xmodmap to restore them, I sometimes get some unexpected
error messages (maybe unexpected just because I don't really
understand the X keyboard model):

$ xmodmap etc/xmodmap.d/common
xmodmap: etc/xmodmap.d/common:1: bad keysym in remove modifier list
'Caps_Lock', no corresponding keycodes
xmodmap: etc/xmodmap.d/common:2: bad keysym target keysym 'Caps_Lock', no
corresponding keycodes
xmodmap: etc/xmodmap.d/common:5: bad keysym target keysym 'Super_R', no
corresponding keycodes
xmodmap: etc/xmodmap.d/common:6: bad keysym target keysym 'Menu', no
corresponding keycodes

Rerunning xmodmap sometimes works, sometimes doesn't, and sometimes
leaves the keyboard in a bit of a funny state. For instance,
currently, my caps lock key is correctly functioning as control,
but it still toggles the caps lock light on my keyboard.

This all may be due to the fact that my (USB) keyboard seems to
detach and reconnect sometimes, but I don't think that should be
relevant - I can unplug and replug a PS/2 keyboard without
resetting key mappings.

Any hints about what my be going on would be appreciated, but the
current behavior seems wrong - I've been running essentially the
same X setup for over a decade and haven't seen this sort of
behavior before.

Bug#211528: xserver-xfree86: New Radeon 9200 chipset not supported (chipid 5964)

2003-09-18 Thread Chris Chiappa
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0-0pre1v1
Severity: normal
Tags: experimental patch

I've got a generic Radeon 9200 (ie, not made by ATI) which even the
xserver-xfree86 in experimental doesn't detect:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 5964

Stepping- SERR- FastB2B-
Status: Cap+ 66Mhz+ UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=medium >TAbort-
SERR-

I made the "obvious" changes to
debian/patches/030b_radeon_rv280_support.diff (included) but I don't know
how to generate the right case clause for the switch () statement in
ati_chip.c. I forced the switch to default to rv280 with this nasty hack:

default:
/*
 * I'd say it's a Rage128 or a Radeon here, except that I don't
 * support them.
 */
return ATI_CHIP_RV280;
return ATI_CHIP_Mach64;
}

and the X server (in about 5 minutes of use) seems fine. Happy to provide
any other info or debugging.

Bug#211528: xserver-xfree86: New Radeon 9200 chipset not supported (chipid 5964)

2003-09-18 Thread Chris Chiappa
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0-0pre1v1
Severity: normal
Tags: experimental patch

I've got a generic Radeon 9200 (ie, not made by ATI) which even the
xserver-xfree86 in experimental doesn't detect:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 5964
(rev 01) (prog-if 00 [VGA])
Subsystem: C.P. Technology Co. Ltd: Unknown device 2073
Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr-
Stepping- SERR- FastB2B-
Status: Cap+ 66Mhz+ UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=medium >TAbort-
SERR-

I made the "obvious" changes to
debian/patches/030b_radeon_rv280_support.diff (included) but I don't know
how to generate the right case clause for the switch () statement in
ati_chip.c. I forced the switch to default to rv280 with this nasty hack:

default:
/*
 * I'd say it's a Rage128 or a Radeon here, except that I don't
 * support them.
 */
return ATI_CHIP_RV280;
return ATI_CHIP_Mach64;
}

and the X server (in about 5 minutes of use) seems fine. Happy to provide
any other info or debugging.

-- Package-specific info:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 5964 (rev 01)
01:00.0 Class 0300: 1002:5964 (rev 01)
