Bug#681409: Bug could be a duplicate of #677173

just a quick reference to this bug:

It could be. The keyboard that stops working for me is the built-in
laptop keyboard, not a USB keyboard as reported in 677173. For me the
USB device (my mouse) is the thing that continues working. On the other
hand (not being a whiz with device drivers) it might be all about
keyboards, any keyboards, irrespective of whether or not they are USB.
Someone who knows more about the driver architecture would have to
answer that question.

Just happened again a couple of days ago, BTW. It is a really quite
disconcerting bug when it happens right in the middle of a video
conference.

Thanks,
Clayton

Bug#681409: xserver-xorg-input-all: Keyboard suddenly unresponsive, mouse still works

2012-07-12 Thread clayton
Package: xserver-xorg-input-all
Version: 1:7.7+1
Severity: important

Since the last couple weeks, once every couple of days my keyboard suddenly
stops responding. The mouse still
works, so I use that to logout of my my window manager (LXDE) and once I am
back to gdm the keyboard works again.
Same behavior with XFCE window manager.

Running up-to-date testing on a Toshiba Satellite C675 (PSC3UU-00N00G) notebook.

It has been many moons since I have seen this behavior.

I am the originator and would not object to this bug being closed down
at this time, as having been overcome by events.

Bug#428711: Ping: Bug#428711: xserver-xorg: xorg suddenly locks up Thinkpad i1300/Silicon Motion

2008-10-05 Thread Clayton
I just tested with the latest and greatest xorg in testing. Behavior is
slightly different now:

$ lspci
Controller 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Silicon Motion, Inc.
SM712 LynxEM+ (rev a0)

xorg is trying to drive this graphics card with a neomagic driver now,
which of course fails.

I forced loading of the siliconmotion driver by manually adding
appropriate device and screen entries to xorg.conf, and I am back to a
blank screen and locked up keyboard, just like before.

Bug#499788: Acknowledgement (xserver-xorg-input-kbd: keyboard frequently gets into weird state)

2008-09-26 Thread Clayton
This bug also screws up the mouse buttons so that mouse clicks do not
work like they used to.

This seems to have something to do with the Scroll lock indicator
light. (There is also a ScrLk key, which seems to have no effect on
this light, or anything else that I can see, while running Debian)

When I start having problems, what I do to restore function is press
Ctrl_Shift several (an indeterminate number) of times until the Scroll
lock indicator lights up. Then I press Ctrl-Shift once more to
un-light the Scroll lock indicator. Usually this is enough to get
things working again, sometimes I have to do it twice.

Bug#499788: xserver-xorg-input-kbd: keyboard frequently gets into weird state

2008-09-22 Thread clayton
Package: xserver-xorg-input-kbd
Version: 1:1.3.1-1
Severity: important

On this Thinkpad x24 / KDE / running SCIM, I am frequently finding that
the keyboard seems to have gotten itself re-mapped in the middle of my
typing or using the keyboard to navigate (I frequently eschew mouse for
keyboard navigation) and I don't know what I might have done to cause
it. The most frequent situation: suddenly PgUp and PgDn start cycling
between the tabs of my mrxvt terminal window, for instance, rather then
scrolling in 'less' as they have always done before. The symptoms
sometimes express themselves in other ways, it is a bit confusing
because it is not consistent.

Sometimes repeated presses of Ctrl-Shift gets me out of trouble. I seem
to have had at least one xserver crash a couple days ago, while this was
happening. (No logs, sorry)

The details are so fuzzy that I hesitate to issue a bug report, but this
happens *a lot* on this machine, and it started very recently.

Kari,

You are not alone with this bug and it is not fixed. I have a Thinkpad
X24 also with a

lspci

and this bug has been biting me for quite some time, including today's
slip of the fingers, ie. X -- console -- X = borked. Hard locks are
very irritating.

Ok, let's wait until the end of October or so, and I'll close it then
if I don't hear back from you.

mplayer/X were kind enough to give us rapid feedback. Last night I
started mplayer and X was clobbered, just like before. This bug is still
out there. It really seems to be mplayer that does it for me. I usually
use xine, but I currently don't remember ever having this problem with
xine (though it has been a while, so I might be forgetting).

You nailed that one, Brice. The problem goes away with
xserver-xorg-video-ati/experimental 1:6.7.194-1.

I was hoping SCIM was having the same problem, but no luck with that
one, still broken. sigh

Bug#445100: xserver-xorg: Ctl-Alt-Fx has stopped working after a fresh install

2007-10-03 Thread clayton
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.3+2
Severity: normal

I just did a fresh install to a new hard-drive, everything up-to-date to
the latest testing. Now when I hit Ctl-Alt-F1, instead of getting a
console, the keyboard and mouse are locked up. This happens at both the
gdm login prompt and while logged into KDE. If I login through the
network and kill X, function is restored.

On the same machine using the same xorg.conf but a different hard drive
with an old install, Ctrl-Alt-F1 works just fine.

Hum, these URL are the same :)
One of them is version 1.1.1-20. The other is probably 1.3 something.
And I guess xserver-xorg-video-siliconmotion is still 1.4.1, right?

Everything works under snapshot.debian.net/archive/2007/03/08/debian/
-- xserver-xorg-core=2:1.1.1-19
-- xserver-xorg-video-siliconmotion=1:1.4.1-4

Replace above xserver-xorg-core (and nothing else changes) with
xserver-xorg-core=2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-11 from testing and it breaks.

Brice, I just added the testing version of only xserver-xorg-core to
the snapshot.debian.net/archive/2007/03/08/debian/ version of xorg. And
then booted into a blank screen. After downgrading xserver-xorg-core
back down to snapshot.debian.net/archive/2007/03/08/debian/ everything
worked again. It would appear the problem is indeed probably in
xserver-xorg-core and not the siliconmotion module.

Clayton, do you know exactly which combination of xserver-xorg-core
and xserver-xorg-video-siliconmotion you tried so far? I forwarded
 your bug upstream at
 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11845 and the developer
wants to know whether you were using the same driver when you said
 xserver-xorg-core 1.1 worked while 1.3 gave a black screen.

I guess you initially had xserver-xorg-core 1.1 with siliconmotion
1.4.1 (all from etch). Then you upgraded to 1.3 + 1.5.1 (current
testing) from what I see at the end of your first report. Then you
probably downgraded back to 1.3 + 1.4.1 to get something working
 again.

 IIRC xserver-xorg-core 1.3 (testing/unstable) should work with
 siliconmotion 1.4.1 (etch/stable). Did/could you check this
combination? It would help us be sure whether the problem is in the
 server or the driver.

Feel free to either reply direct in the upstream bug above or reply
here and will be forward your reply there.

 Thanks,
 Brice

Hi Brice,

Hmmm, 424684 is reporting:

For vesa, in my log I am seeing:

But I can't say that I remember actually ever *seeing* vesa run on this
machine. It is just notable that in the current messed-up state behavior is

Post upgrade, this machine is now dead in the water.

 Try downgrading with
 http://snapshot.debian.net/archive/2007/03/08/debian/pool/main/x/xorg-server/xserver-xorg-core_1.1.1-20_i386.deb

I actually had to downgrade all of the xorg packages to
http://snapshot.debian.net/archive/2007/03/08/debian/ to get the xserver to
run, it was complaining about package versions not matching. But after some
pulling of the hair, I succeeded (thank you apt-get) and X is working again. So
we can't say for sure it is xserver-xorg-core, from this experiment.

If I can help debugging in any other way, don't hesitate to ask.

Bug#428711: xserver-xorg: xorg suddenly locks up Thinkpad i1300/Silicon Motion

2007-06-13 Thread clayton
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.2-5
Severity: important

I track testing with this machine. It was working just fine with
xorg/siliconmotion module until I upgraded to the
current testing version. Now starting X results in a blank screen, and a locked
up keyboard (Ctl-Alt-F1,
Ctl-Alt-Backspace seem to have no effect). I can still log in through the
network.

The appended log file contains:

(EE) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI capable

Note that I did make this go away at one point by turning off AIGLX, and
behavior was unchanged.

I also tried the vesa module, and had exactly the same result: blank screen,
unresponsive keyboard.

Post upgrade, this machine is now dead in the water.
