Re: Why use a font server?

2002-02-06 Thread Derek J Witt

Another reason is that some TrueType fonts have problems rendering correctly.
Some font servers actually render better than others. They can provide an alternative
way of providing fonts in case the X server is having troubles getting them.
Think of it as a redundant backups for fonts.

The X server is single-threaded, so the entire X server will hang while
rasterizing a font. If you use a font server, this doesn't happen.

Admittedly, this is a less serious problem in this age of fast machines.

xfs might also be an advantage on a machine with multiple X servers
running, centralizing the workload. One X server that needs a fond may
find that the work has already been done by xfs on behalf of another X
server.

Finally xfs may be useful where you have a large and complex font
installation at your site and you need to export them to multiple hosts
and for some reason (perhaps due to licensing reasons), you can just
copy the fonts physically onto the local disk of every X server.

I've never found a clear explanation of *how* to use it, let alone a
hint of *why* or why not to use it.

How it works is pretty simple.

On the font server side:

Install whatever fonts it's supposed to serve. Set up
/etc/X11/fs/config (or whatever path works on your box) as described in
xfs(1). Run it with an init script.

On the X server side:

Put a reference to the font server in the Files section of the
XF86Config file.

Re: Accelerated video driver for XFree86 4.1.0

2002-01-15 Thread Derek J Witt

The 7000 QD AGP card is supported just fine in 4.1.0 as long as one is
using the latest DRI modules as included in 2.4.17 and are using `Option
CrtScreen' in XF86Config-4.

For some reason, if one does not specify the type of monitor being used,
the monitor gets sent into standby and the computer locks up.

Otherwise, XF is purring like a kitten with full 3D acceleration. glxgears
reports between 500 to 900 fps.

Yeah, I'm used to the separate keys. I still don't like the position of
the caps lock on a sun5 keyboard (I think that's the type on an Ultra
sparc 5). But, that's an issue I can fix with xmodmap when using my
Solaris account on campus. If I want to re-enable the extra keys, I can
just use xmodmap. Just my two cents worth.

Re: occured problems on fresh 2v18 install

2000-10-19 Thread Derek J Witt
Christian, I ran into some of these problems.

 2. When starting xf86cfg and clicking on the top bar or on monitor-configure
the program crashes. If I start a xterm on another text console and then
start xf86cfg from there (already running X) I can see an Xt error message
(forgot the exact phrase)

I found a solution to the Xt errors with xf86cfg. I just copied
libXt.so.6.0 from Xbin.tgz that I downloaded from xfree86.org over
debian's library. (See previous posts about that problem) That problem
still exists.

 3. My german umlauts äöüß are gone. I used the same .xmodmap but although
I had / mapped allright on the right control key, the umlauts produced
no char at all.

 4. Configuring german keyboard layout with xf86cfg yields to no effect (I
restarted X, of course)

Have ya tried xf86config to configure the keyboard? I also find that
xkeycaps works quite well. (I switch keyboard layouts by using the gnome
keyboard applet).

 5. There was a missing dependency to xutils and thus mkfontdir could not
be found.

Yeah, I found that in xfonts-base or xserver-common (I forget which one).

XtMakeGeometry errors resolved

2000-10-14 Thread Derek J Witt
Hi, all. I figured out a way to resolve the parent not composite errors
I've been getting from the xaw packages. I tried running apt-get to
install X from the phase2 debbies. Of course, I started getting the
error.

But, I then downloaded the Linux-ix86-glibc21 tar files from
ftp.xfre86.org. After overwriting the debianized X with the tar files (via
Xinstall.sh), I no longer get the errors. All debian config files are
preserved and working like a charm. Now, the xaw libraries are behaving
just fine.

I can now run Saphira and xfontsel and other xaw-based software without a
problem.

Re: XFree86 4.0.1 and app-defaults

2000-07-28 Thread Derek J Witt
I just upgraded to XF 4.0.1 via the tarballs. I found out that X is more
unstable than XF 4.0.0. The s3virge server just locks up my system faster
than 4.0.0 did. I tried disabling gpm, all font servers to no avail.

The only stability I've gotten from XFree86 (3.x and 4.0.x in general) is
by using fbdev with VESA FB. While this is very stable for me, it's
non-accelerated. This does hamper some things; I can't play some games
like Q3A and Unreal Tournament (Not that really matters ;-)

It seems that my box locks up mostly when xterm scrolls up or other
changes content (scrolling and clearing window seem to be the
culprits). I also had my box lock up when my screen changes content
(e.g. moving windows or when other windows' content change).

I am using a S3 Virge/GX2 with 4 MB VRAM (Diamond Stealth 3D 4000). This
is an AGP card. I don't think it's a AGPx2. I tried adjusting the
aparture size in my bios. I tried using from 0 upto 32Mb to no avail. It
seems that 16Mb is perhaps the most stable.

I also tried disabling all ROM shadowing in my bios. That seems to help
some. I am still shadowing my video bios. I don't know if that affects it.
I could also try disabling IRQ10 (making the video card not using IRQ's).

BTW, I'm using a Tyan AT-100 bios dated 23 September 1999. I have 32Mb
ram, K6-2/350. I am currently using 2.4.0-test4. I am at woody. I know i'm
using at least libc 2.1.2 or so.

If anyone would have any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
