Bug#459371: caps led toggles when I have ctrl and caps switched

On, laptop 1:

I initially have the correct behaviour, but after disabling the
caps-ctrl switch, the caps led remains linked to pressing ctrl;

this was the output just after login:

0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ xprop -root _XKB_RULES_NAMES
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "xorg", "pc104", "ro", "comma",
"lv3:ralt_switch,ctrl:swapcaps,grp:shifts_toggle"

- I logged in through the "new login/authentication" (sorry, I don't
know the English equivalent since I am using GNOME in Romanian) menu
from Applications->System Utilities from my wife's account
- the keyboard settings was set both by a session command (reminiscent
from the times the comma romanian variant wasn't accessible via the
gnome-keyboard-preferences), still, that command just chose the comma
variant, while
- the gnome keyboard setting was responsible for the switch, and after
I changed to default the layout toggle, and disabled the switch, the
CAPS led was following the ctrl key presses

This was the output after the last change:
0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ xprop -root _XKB_RULES_NAMES
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "xorg", "pc104", "ro,ro,fr,us",
",std,,alt-intl", "lv3:ralt_switch"

--
OK, I removed the command from thelist of commands to be ran at
session login, and now I get by default:

- CAPS led linked to cpas, although I have the caps-ctrl switch

0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ xprop -root _XKB_RULES_NAMES
_XK B_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "xorg", "pc104", "ro,ro,fr,us",
",std,,alt-intl", "lv3:ralt_switch,ctrl:swapcaps"

I disabled the switch and then I got (by coincidence the proper
behaviour) and this xprop output:

0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ xprop -root _XKB_RULES_NAMES
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "xorg", "pc104", "ro,ro,fr,us",
",std,,alt-intl", "lv3:ralt_switch"

I even got into the aberant situation when I had the caps led on while
CAPS was actually off via the following procedure:
- gnome-keyboard-preferences -> layouts -> layout options... -> ctrl
key position -> default
- press ctrl
- select swap ctrl and CapsLock
- close the window

I am suspecting the problem is in the gnome-keyboard-preferences
applet, but how do I test? Is this enough?

I tried to correct the issue in the command line via this command:

0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ setxkbmap -layout ro,ro -variant ,std
0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ xprop -root _XKB_RULES_NAMES
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "xorg", "pc104", "ro,ro", ",std",
"lv3:ralt_switch,ctrl:swapcaps"

but at this point the caps led linked its behaviour to CTRL, but in
reverse mode (on when caps was off and vice-versa).

I managed to correct the issue by doing the "ctrl key position" trick
once more and then I issued:

0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ setxkbmap -layout ro,ro,fr,us -variant ,std,,alt-intl
-option
0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ xprop -root _XKB_RULES_NAMES
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "xorg", "pc104", "ro,ro,fr,us", ",std,,alt-intl", ""
0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ setxkbmap -layout ro,ro,fr,us -variant
,std,,alt-intl -option lv3:ralt_switch,ctrl:swapcaps
0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ xprop -root _XKB_RULES_NAMES
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "xorg", "pc104", "ro,ro,fr,us",
",std,,alt-intl", "lv3:ralt_switch,ctrl:swapcaps"

At this point everything worked as expected, so it seems that g-k-p is
responsible for the aberant behaviour.

Still I have a question, is this normal (the options double up):

0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ xprop -root _XKB_RULES_NAMES
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "xorg", "pc104", "ro,ro,fr,us",
",std,,alt-intl", "lv3:ralt_switch,ctrl:swapcaps"
0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ setxkbmap -layout ro,ro,fr,us -variant
,std,,alt-intl -option lv3:ralt_switch,ctrl:swapcaps
0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ xprop -root _XKB_RULES_NAMES
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "xorg", "pc104", "ro,ro,fr,us",
",std,,alt-intl",
"lv3:ralt_switch,ctrl:swapcaps,lv3:ralt_switch,ctrl:swapcaps"

---

So, as a conclusion:
- changing "ctrl key position" via g-k-p behaviour can lead to caps led desyncs
- using the command line to change that behaviour sometimes helps, but
the resync can be obtained only via g-k-p
- using the -option parameter of setxkbmap can lead to doubled up options

I am NOT going to reassign this bug to g-k-p since I need someone to
confirm my observations.

Bug#459371: caps led toggles when I have ctrl and caps switched

2008-10-21 Thread Eddy Petrișor
Package: xorg-server
Version: 2:1.4.2-7

Hello,

I have seen this behaviour, too for a long time now, but when I
initially looked for it, it was around the date of the report, so I
thought I'd be fixed. Now I see the problem is still there and the
release is getting closer.

I am still experiencing this behavour on two laptops; on both the ctrl
and caps keys are switched (on one I surely used the GNOME keyboard
thingie to setup the switch, while on the other I am unsure - not in
front of the machine).

I am going to test if changing via the command line changes anything.

Personally, I hope that this regression will be fixed properly before the
release :-).

This bug is fixed in xserver-xorg-input-synaptics
0.14.7~git20070706-2.2, as far as I'm concerned. The driver will be
loaded automatically if a touchpad is detected. No xorg.conf
modification needed. No non-default options are set, but I don't think
that should be a problem, you can play with xorg.conf for that if you
want.

Agreed, closing.
The non default options were not added before as well.

I installed yesterday 0.14.7~git20070706-2.1.lenny1, I removed the InputDevice section and the
ServerLayout section from xorg.conf, and indeed, the problem is fixed.

The problem is that I need to readd the InputDriver section since, by default, 'SHMConfig' is not
'true' and gsynaptics and other synaptics configuration tools don't work. Is there a security reason
why this option isn't already true, by default? Is changing this to be the default difficult?

Hello,

Not sure what will happen to this bug until Lenny is released, but since Adding a ServerLayout

if time doesn't allow it to be fixed properly, we should revert the code that actually placed that

that's probably the problem here. looks like the variant is named

Indeed, thanks. I am using std instead and is working now. Still I am not sure if the variant name
hasn't changed, since before 1.3-1 ctrl+alt+Fx used to work.

I will check again to be sure that upgrades from Etch to Lenny aren't broken in this regard. If not,
then I guess this bug can be closed since it would be obvious my error that caused it.

I wasn't sure which was the *responsible* package for this bug, so I
preferred a more generic package :-/ .

Indeed, I forgot
about it since I am used to ctrl+alt+Fx working

2008-06-10 Thread Eddy Petrișor
Subject: xorg: ctrl+alt+Fx doesn't work anymore (on an old install)
Package: xorg
Version: 1:7.3+10
Severity: important

Hello,

I suspect this bug is the same as 445100 and 484294, but it seems the
confusion around the cause is too big, so, although my gut tells me this
is the same bug, I am adding this as a separate BR, as suggested in one
of the ones above.

ctrl+alt+Fx used to work until about a month ago or so, but now it is
broken. I can't even switch via keyboard to another user's session,
ecept through GNOME's menu.

About my setup:
- I am using xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd from sid; I used to have fglrx,
but I gave it up in favour of radeonhd, and, although I still have the
fglrx-driver package installed, I don't have the kernel module
- I have caps and ctrl switched for my user, while my wife's account
doesn't have the switch --- ctrl+alt+Fx doesn't work for either of us,
no matter the log in order

I will tr to remove any trace of the fglrx driver, although I really
don't suspect fglrx being the culprit ... (about this issue).

Please ask about any information you might need.

P.S.:I think serious would have been appropriate, taking into account
that: this is a regression, access to text consoles is lost entirely,
upgrading xorg shouldn't prevent the proper usage of the computer;
still I'll leave this as important, just to avoid severity wars and to
hope for a fast fix.

Bug#481176: [l10n:ro] xkeyboard-config needs to comply with Romanian standards (apply patch or let 1.3 in lenny)

2008-05-14 Thread Eddy Petrișor
Package: xkeyboard-config
Version: 1.2~cvs.20080501.1-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch l10n

Hello,

Almost 4 years have passed since the creation of the Romanian standard
for keyboard (SR13992:2004). There are 2 layouts legislated by this
standard and they can be seen in these pictures at
http://www.i18n.ro/tastaturi:

http://www.i18n.ro/Imagine:Ro.png
http://www.i18n.ro/Imagine:Ro-us.png

Each of these 2 layouts have been implemented in two variants with
commabelow sStT and with cedilla sStT, respectively.
Currently, in Debian, the default xkeyboard-config is the cedilla
(ro-us) variant of the layout and we want to change this.
( For more information about this commabellow/cedilla issue, see:
http://wiki.debian.org/L10N/Romanian/CommaTransition )

The correct variants are the ones with commabelow, while the cedilla
ones are incorrect and kept for compatibility reasons with other OSes.
Using comma below diacritics by default is an unofficial release goal
of the Romanian l10n team for the lenny release.

The upstream deals with this issue in this BR:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13277

while the repo already has these changes included in the proposed patch:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=16354.

Please apply the attached patch or use the next upstream release in
lenny (1.3 - scheduled for the 27th of May) to fix this issue.

Hello,

The GNOME layout selection tool does not allow selection of all the
existing layout for Romanian. To make matters worse, the hidden layouts
are the ones that should be used in public instititions (ones that
generate correct diactics - s and t with comma below) according to
Romanian law. Also note that the cedilla variants are the ones that will
be deprecated sooner or later although the "std" layout is one of those.

A lengthier discussion was started on the corresponding ubuntu bug, with
references to the Romanian law, and the standard, images with the layout
...

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xkeyboard-config/+bug/108057

Note that the choice issue they discuss is not implemented in anyway
here yet, although the default layout for Lenny should be the comma
variant since having correct diacritics for Romanian is an internal
release goal of the Romanian L10N team:

http://wiki.debian.org/L10N/Romanian/Lenny (in Romanian; the first point
is the one dealing with the issue of using correct diacritics).

Attached is a patch I made for the unstable version of the package and I
tested on the etch version.

Please include this patch in the next release of the package.

Bug#432679: Mapping d-i console layout choices to X layout in the installed system

2007-07-11 Thread Eddy Petrișor
Package: xserver-xorg

It would be nice to be able to choose the right X layout in the installed
system based on the choices made in D-I.

Please read below about the implementation proposal.

I have committed the changes in d-i's SVN repo in revision 48042.

Still I think we should clarify the and format and the place where this
information will be so that is easier for the X
maintainers to actually use this information in a programatic way.

For starters I think we should keep a list like the one I proposed somewhere in
the D-I SVN repo.

Is there an already existing package that seems appropriate to incorporate this
information, or do we have to make a new
package?

I fociblity purged the xserver-xorg package (1:7.1.0-15) installed and installed
1:7.1.0-15.1 (which only added the previous patch and a changelog entry - patch
attached), I installed all resulting packages from the build (except -dev
packages), including xserver-xorg.

Then I added a new user, restarted gdm and logged in with the new user. The
default keyboard layout was the romanian one.

(I think the next section deserves a bug of its own, but I'll let others judge
this.)

WRT the non-scalability, I agree and think we should add a step to the new
language process[1] that would add pairs like:

fr-latin9,fr:xmap=fr
ro:xmap=ro
ro-comma:xmap=ro,variant=comma

Which should define DI to Xorg layout mappings and we could add that info
directly as pacthes to xorg (or maybe console-data, or which is the
most-hip-console-layout-database) and xorg could use that information during
build to make the appropriate xserver-xorg.postinst section (of course, if added
to other package than xorg, xorg would have to Build-Depend on that package,
thus takign the most recent information).

What do you think?

UTF-8 is a better alternative for Romanian.

Hmm, probably due to backporting xorg from Ubuntu.

I have seen this too on a fresh installation on a Dell Inspiron 6400/E1505

After the installation of the system the kbd and mouse modules are not
installed. Nor are the video drivers.

Yes, this fixed it for me, too.

It seems that all the issues have disappeared with this change.

Bug#389030: xserver-xorg: does not start (after reboot) if no mouse is attached

2006-09-23 Thread Eddy Petrișor
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.0.22
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Hello,

I have found that if I plug out the USB mouse and restart the system the
X server will not start unless th mouse is attached. Removing the mouse
after the server has started has no ill effects.

Although currently there are almost no systems without a mouse, it
shouldn't be a requiremnt for the X server to start.
