This was not easy to check because my tdfx configuration was asleep in a
closet. Anyway I did a fresh Etch install on it and can report now.

The bug is still here, though I have some news: the "unknown reason" is
still here but there a line just before saying
"rejecting mode with horizontal resolution 1400 not divisibile by 16 and
   clock 179260 greater than 135000"
(check the joined logs / configs)

Of course 1400 isn't a multiple of 16 but I know it's not a hardware
constraint. Additionally I tested with no explicit modeline and it works
out a 1400x1050 @ 60 Hz resolution ! (see t1/*)

I don't know where the 135000 comes from... but it's totally not coherent.
It has picked up 1280x960 @ 85 Hz which works at 148.5 MHz. The card has
aXorg.0.log clock range (logged) from 12 to 270 MHz which is far enough to
display themode I wanted.

And the DRI is still disabled at hi-res :( ... well that's another bug.

Joined config & logs: xtests.tar.bz2 contains xtests/t{1,2}/
{xorg.conf,Xorg.0.log}. t1 has no modeline and displays 1400x1050 @ 60Hz,
while t2 has an explicit modeline and only displays at 1280x960.

Bug#399411: xserver-xorg: gtf command missing

2006-11-19 Thread Fabien COUTANT
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.1.0-6
Severity: important

In sarge I used this little program to generate monitor timing lines for
modes for which the server didn't have a definition, or for which it used
a sub-optimal definition.

I still need this program to define correct timings for 1400x1050 or
1280x960 for example.

In sarge it was part of xserver-xfree86. It was also in sarge's backport
xserver-xorg. Please bring it back, or make it available in a separate
package.

It really has 16MB (and always had ;)

Sad... I've now replaced my woody by a sarge and can't reproduce it any
more... and have no backup, only packages CDs :(
If that's very important I could try to extract into sarge and run the X
server I used on woody, switch the graphic cards and make a run to get a
log, but that's a quite heavy manipulation

Linux harris 2.4.27-1-k7-smp #1 SMP Wed Dec 1 20:19:10 JST 2004 i686 GNU/Linux
(NB: was already reported in original /var/log/XFree86.0.log)

I'm running a bi-AthlonMP, maybe some AMD/3Dnow specific code is triggered
and bugs things...

!!!WARNING!!! ok to provide this, but it is probably not significant since
I'm now running with another graphics card (a Radeon).

Feb 1 06:53:47 harris kernel: agpgart: AGP aperture is 128M @ 0xe000
Feb 1 06:54:04 harris kernel: [drm] AGP 0.99 Aperture @ 0xe000 128MB

Yes. And not sure but I seem to remember it was already here when it
worked. It's a Diamond "Monster Fusion", maybe the vendor tweaked RAM
timings to improve speed or stability ?

Bug#289338: additional info about 1400x1050

2005-01-10 Thread Fabien COUTANT
Hello, some news about the bug:
I had the occasion to temporarily change my graphics card and try a Radeon
9250 (detected as "9200PRO 5960"). Doing so my 1400x1050 mode definition
was accepted and I could use it. So the bug may be related to the tdfx
driver, or, the other way round, the radeon driver does something to enable
the acceptance of the mode.
