Aha, there's the rub - I fobbed it off on some other poor loser.

How much memory does your system have? If it's more than 2 Gigabyte,
try booting with the "mem=2G" kernel parameter.

As far as I remember it had 4G.

See https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46557 for more
information on that topic.

Thanks. I guess you can close the bug.

Re: [squeeze -> 2.6.36 regression] holes in characters rendered on screen in X

If I remember correctly, your kernel is 3.3-rc1 plus an unrelated

Yes.

Am I correct in guessing that the glitches in font rendering didn't
happen again?

Since installing the debugwait option the problem seems to have gone away.

I hear that the way forward is SNA, which is enabled in the
xserver-xorg-video-intel package in experimental.

SNA? I haven't used SNA for 20 odd years. :-)

   I don't know if it
requires any particular patches on top of linus's master for
kernel-side support. cc-ing the Debian intel driver maintainers in
case they can give a hint.

Great! I'll get this fixed in time for my once every 6 years machine
replacement. :-)

Should be pretty easy to get everything on a Vaio Z2 working, right. :-)

A further piece of info.

This bug only happens on 64 bit systems. If I install the 32 bit (x86)
version of Debian I get no problem.

Will try changing kernel now.

You could try to ssh into it to find out. Speaking of hangs, your GPU
locks up even before X starts, as can be seen from the kernel logs:

[6.998089] [drm] nouveau :00:05.0: GPU lockup - switching to software
fbcon

Could you test a newer kernel, say 2.6.37-rc7 from experimental? Note
that the squeeze version of xserver-xorg-video-nouveau does not work
with kernels later than 2.6.33, so you need to install that from
experimental as well, or make do with the xserver-xorg-video-fbdev
driver.

Ok, will do.

Hi John,

so, how is it going? :)

Since installing the new kernel I've not seen the problem

I haven't installed the even newer kernel (fix for suspend problems) yet.

Bug#590251: xserver-xorg: Since upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze often see corruption on scrolling

2010-07-25 Thread John Hughes
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.5+6
Severity: important

Since I upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze I often see corrupted window contents
on scrolling, certainly in Gnome Terminal, probably in other apps.

This may be related to using multiple monitors - I have a laptop on my desk
attached to an external LCD screen, I often unplug it and move around the
house, using xrandr2 to change the monitor configuration.

Please feel free to close it - I don't have the equipement to test it
any more.

(The whole mess was almost certainly due to POST problems and will be
obosoleted by the modesetting branch of the intel driver).

Bug#372277: xcursor-themes doesn't make the symlinks for left_ptr_watch wanted by thunderbird/firefox

2006-06-09 Thread John Hughes
Package: xcursor-themes
Version: 1.0.1-4
Severity: minor

Thunderbird/Firefox &c seem to want some crazy aliases for cursor names, e.g.
08e8e1c95fe2fc01f976f1e063a24ccd for left_ptr_watch.

Maybe this is a bug in the mozilla stuff, but some cursor themes,
e.g. Industrial, seem to make a symlink to keep 'em happy.

Alternatively, you may set the environment variables XORG_CFLAGS

Now what?

Bug#354846: What's going on

2006-03-21 Thread John Hughes
This is realy two seperate problems.

1. i810 won't work if it's not the primary video - this may be
impossible to fix as it needs the bios to work.

2. in Xorg 6.9 the memory map initialisation of Radeon cards is screwy,
Benjamin Herrenschmidt is working on fixing it on Xorg 7.0
