Bug#517127: compiz does not run on display 1.0 (but on 0.0)

2009-02-25 Thread Juergen Kosel
Package: compiz
Version: 0.7.6-7
Severity: normal

Hello,

I have configured gdm to start 2 xservers.
They set DISPLAY to :0.0 and :1.0

When I try to start compiz in a terminal on display :1.0, it delivers the
following:

compiz --replace

isn't going to work.

/usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :1.0

The stange thing is, that compiz works on the other display.

Bug#490071: how to debug

It might be interesting if you could try newer kernels or even an
upstream drm Git snapshot. Some other lockup problems turned out to be
 fixed there already, see e.g.
 http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17075 .

when I have seen the problem the first time, my machine was running
kernel 2.6.24.
So I have now tested with kernel packages linux-image-2.6.26-1-amd64,
linux-image-2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-amd64 and linux-image-2.6.18-6-amd64.
With all 3 kernel versions I have now seen the problem. Since it also
happend with linux-image-2.6.18-6-amd64, I believe we could exclude that
the problem is related to a change in kernel.

Bug#490071: update xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.6.3-2 - 1:6.9.0-1

2008-07-16 Thread Juergen Kosel
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hello,

a few days ago I had downgraded xserver-xorg-video-ati to 1:6.6.3-2
which also caused a downgrade of nearly all other xorg packages to the
versions of stable. This also disabled the gl stuff and compiz.
During this time I haven't seen any crash of xorg. (Which of course
proves nothing.)

Yesterday I had updated xserver-xorg-video-ati to 1:6.9.0-1 and the
other packeges also to the versions of testing.
So the gl stuff and compiz is working again.

With this versions I have seen yesterday and today those crashes of
xorg, were xorg take 98% CPU time.
(But the last time the mouse pointer was still moveable and only the
keyboard was gone and all X11 applications were frozen.)
It is still dificult to say, if the problem is located in xorg,
xserver-xorg-video-ati, the gl stuff or compiz.

Hello,

it happened again.
This time I tried to close a knotify window. (Maybe I have missed the
OK Button. But I don't believe that this is it.)

Beside the panel-applets, there were only a few programms running within
my gnome/compiz session:
konsole with aptitude
konquerer which opened the knotify window.

I attach the output of ps -aux.

I still don't see what might triggered the problem.
So I will now downgrade xserver-xorg-video-ati

Hello,

I had the same problem (reported as 484123, please merge).
The packet compiz-plugins depends on libedocration0 = 0.5.0
But with libedocration0 0.6.3~git20080115.0ea58487-1 from testing it
does not work!
So it seems to me, that it must depend on something like
libedocration0 = 7.6.?

This should be fixed in the current unstable packages (version 0.7.6).
Make sure you upgrade all compiz packages to that version.

after the upgrade to 0.7.6 it doesn't complain any, mmore, thait it can't
load plugin ccp.
But the Window decorations are still missing - Which makes compiz

 Is the decoration plugin loaded?
 See http://bgoglin.livejournal.com/11253.html

at least compiz is configured to load this plugin.
How could I check that the plugin is really loaded?

Bug#478836: whole memory occupied if screensaver interaggreagate is started within compiz

2008-05-01 Thread Juergen Kosel
Package: compiz
Version: 0.6.3~git20080115.0ea58487-1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

Hello,

when /usr/lib/xscreensaver/interaggregate was started,
the local console with gnome session became unusable.
From a remote ssh session I saw, that all memory (1 GB RAM + 1.4 GB swap)
were occupied.
Also all of the CPU time were in use (mostly by xorg and compiz.real).
So the computer was very busy with swapping and therefore it was
difficult and timeconsuming to kill the interaggregate process.

On the first view I thought that this is a problem of interaggregate,
and reported it as bug #478813.
But then I have started interaggreagate to reproduce the problem again.
It seems to me that it is related to compiz: If compiz doesn't run,
everything is fine.

But with compiz there are also other screensavers which cause the
problem, e.g. whirlwindwarp.

Next point: It doesn't seem to help always to kill the screensaver process,
but killing compiz.real leads to a usable system again.

Bug#459454: compiz refuses to work (window boarder disappear, windows are unmoveable)

2008-01-06 Thread Juergen Kosel
Package: compiz
Version: 0.6.3~git20071208.25941d14-1
Severity: normal

Hello,
after update from stable to testing, compiz refuses to work anymore.
Which means, that if compiz is started with `compiz --replace` the
boarders of all windows (xterms, etc) disapear and the windows become
unmoveable.

The following is the output of compiz:
compiz --replace
Checking for Xgl: not present.
Detected PCI ID for VGA: 01:00.0 0300: 1002:5b60 (prog-if 00 [VGA])

Checking for Xgl: not present.
Starting gtk-window-decorator
/usr/bin/compiz.real (cube) - Warn: Failed to load slide: freedesktop

Due to the line Checking for Xgl: not present., I guess that there is
something foul with package dependencies.
The graphic card is an ATI Radeon X300 and the X11 device driver is RADEON.

You're probably missing some plugins. Make sure decoration is loaded.
You can use ccsm (package compizconfig-settings-manager) to select it
(or gconf if you like it, see http://bgoglin.livejournal.com/11253.html).

yes, this solved the problem.
Could you please add a default decoration, so that other users who
upgrade from stable avouid that their xterms (etc.) become unusable?

 Hello,

after adding the IPv6 addresses of my machines to /etc/hosts, login by XDMCP
becomes impossible. Either the server doesn't provide the greeter windows
(with login prompt) at all. Or user becomes imediattly logged out again.

Which display manager are you using? xdm, gdm, kdm? Those are
 responsible of XDMCP iirc.

The display manager is gdm.

The /etc/hosts entries locks like that:

2001:5c0:8d3a::1ruetsch44.priv.net.de ruetsch44
