I can report the same or very similar behaviour for my setup.

My machine is also an old Dell machine (Vostro 430 from early 2010),
with graphics card nVidia GT218 [GeForce 310] using the nouveau
driver.

I noticed the problem in GDM login screen, xfce and fluxbox.

Ditto, with pretty much similar setup. I only have one screen (my
laptop screen).

I rebuilt xsserver-xorg with the patch pointed to

Bug#711743: xkb-data: international GB keyboard with AltGr dead keys

2013-06-09 Thread Julian Gilbey
Package: xkb-data
Version: 2.5.1-3
Tags: patch

I have written a new GB keyboard layout providing a much fuller
international (European) coverage than the current offering, based
on a similar US one. It is attached here; it would be nice to
incorporate it into the package.

I'm attaching it in both plain text and gzipped, in case the plain
text version gets mushed.

Bug#696126: xkb-data: no way to (easily) type an apostrophe in polytonic Greek

2012-12-16 Thread Julian Gilbey
Package: xkb-data
Version: 2.5.1-2.1
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

In /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/gr, the simple variant of Greek allows
for apostrophe and double-quote on line 78:

key AC11 { [ apostrophe,quotedbl ] }; // '

However, this is overridden in polytonic Greek (the polytonic
variant) by the necessary dead keys:

key AC11 { [ dead_grave, dead_dasia ] }; // ` ̔

In polytonic ancient (and perhaps modern) Greek, phrases such as οἶός
τ' εἰμί (I am able) are common, and it is a pain to have to change
keyboards for just one character every so often.

It would be nice to be able to have these characters available in the
standard polytonic Greek keyboard. One possibility is to have key
AC11 be a FOUR_LEVEL key, allowing ' (apostrophe) using right-alt+'
and (quotedbl) using right-alt+shift+'. Here is a tested patch
which achieves this:

--- gr.orig 2012-12-17 00:00:45.592885801 +
+++ gr  2012-12-17 00:13:38.536165180 +

+key AC11 { type[Group1]=FOUR_LEVEL,
+ [ dead_grave, dead_dasia, apostrophe, quotedbl  ] };

 partial alphanumeric_keys alternate_group

This seems to be the only significant functionality which is lost in
the polytonic keyboard; the braces and brackets which are also lost
are far less important, AFAICT, and there is no obvious place to
reintroduce them (as the third level is already used for these keys in
the polytonic keyboard).

Bug#530512: compiz: fails to redraw windows and move them around

2009-05-27 Thread Julian Gilbey
I think I've found the problem: compizconfig-backend-gconf 0.8.2-1 has
not yet migrated to testing. Bizarrely, there is no dependency
mentioned, and yet this was the entire problem: upgrading this package
from 0.7.6-1 to 0.8.2-1 solved the problem for me.

So there is a dependency or conflict missing somewhere, but I'm unsure
exactly where it should be.

Yes, we need a backtrace of the crash. You can get one by:
 1) looking at the end of Xorg.0.log (or Xorg.0.log.old if X already
 restarted)
 2) running gdb on your core
 3) attaching gdb to a running X from another machine through ssh before
 the crash occurs.

The best would be 2) or 3) after installing xserver-xorg-core-dbg.

Yay! I managed to catch it! I installed a local /usr/local/bin/X,
calling it from /etc/gdm/gdm.conf, which calls X with -core and
rotates the core files using logrotate before starting X. gdm tried
restarting X three times (hence three later core files, which only
have X failing to start because of the lockup), but I got the core
file where it crashed!

Below is gdb running a backtrace on the core file. I've saved the
core in case it's still relevant.

Hopefully this will be of some help in tracking down this elusive
bug.

Bug#496889: gnome-games: sol causes(?) X-server crash and lockup

Such a dump should be useful to track down the bug. I’m reassigning the
bug to X so that they can ask you the information they need.

The problem is that gdm tries restarting X at least twice after the
crash, after both of which X failed to start because it was locked
up. So the original crash info and core file have been overwritten.
Oops. I've just written a wrapper round X to rotate the core files
before running X, so hopefully the next time there is a crash, I'll be
able to pass on this information.

I just tried compiling it on my testing machine, and it died as it
couldn't find libxslt.pc, so I needed to install libxslt1-dev to build
the package.

Apologies - none of the bug titles seemed to match my symptoms.
Problem now fixed on my machine by using unstable packages.

I know the breakage of the nvidia proprietary driver is not a bug in
xorg, but the standard thing to do when your package breaks an other one
is to upload a new version that conflicts with broken versions of the
other one. Unless you do that, many more people will face this issue,
even when a new version of nvidia-glx enters testing. I am just not sure
about the exact versions with which it should conflict.

(btw I used the gcc -shared workaround)

No, no, no!!! Please don't do that!!!

I've got an older NVIDIA graphics card (GeForce4 MX 440) which doesn't
run with any driver later than 1.0-96xx. So if you make xserver-xorg
conflict with older nvidia drivers, then even using the gcc -shared
workaround, I won't be able to install it.

There must be a better solution?

I don't know - I haven't used an 8-bit display recently. If I have

 Bye,

I did that, but as my XF86Config-4 had been hand-tweaked, it
completely broke. However, I then hand-compared the dexconf-generated
one with my original and copied appropriate changes. Alt-Ctl-F1 etc
now work again. For info, I've attached the old and new versions,
along with a diff.

It might have simply been changing the XkbLayout setting from uk to gb
which did it.

It, um, does. This is usually an indication of XKB problems.

I don't understand. I just upgraded my testing distro from
xserver-xfree86, which allowed me to switch to the virtual consoles,
to xserver-xorg, which doesn't appear to do so. If there are XKB
problems, how can I go about diagnosing what might have changed
between these two servers? I haven't touched my XKB configuration in
the interim.

Bug#327282: xserver-xorg: can't switch to virtual console with alt-ctl-f1

 Two things are handy:
 a) the content of /var/log/Xorg.0.log,
 b) the output of setxkbmap -rules xorg -model pc104 -layout us -print |

(a) Attached; note the penultimate line:

There is actually no file by that name on my system. (The directory
is empty.)

(b)

burnside:~ $ setxkbmap -rules xorg -model pc104 -layout us -print | xkbcomp - :0

burnside:~ $ setxkbmap -rules xorg -model pc105 -layout uk -print | xkbcomp - :0
syntax error: line 1 of misc
last scanned symbol is: AudibleBell
Error:Error interpreting include file misc
  Exiting
  Abandoning compatibility map complete
  Abandoning compatibility map (null)

And /etc/X11/xkb/compat/misc from xlibs version 6.8.2.dfsg.1-6 is also
attached.

Hope this helps to shed some light!

Bug#327282: xserver-xorg: can't switch to virtual console with alt-ctl-f1

2005-09-08 Thread Julian Gilbey
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-6
Severity: important

xserver-xfree86 allowed one to exit the xserver to a virtual console
using the alt-ctl-f1...f6 combinations. The new xserver-xorg does not
appear to allow this; this is very important should a window manager
get stuck, for example.

Any suggestions on how to fix?

   Julian

 Patch welcome. :)

There's almost-appropriate text in one of the manpages in libxt-dev; I
just grepped for %D among them

Colormap issues with mozilla on 8-bit screen - XRENDER extension?

2004-03-28 Thread Julian Gilbey
I've got an interesting problem. I've recently upgraded my XWindows
packages and mozilla (all in unstable) from about a month ago, and now
mozilla can't get a decent set of colo(u)rs. I'm working on an 8-bit
display :-/ and I remember Branden saying something a while back about
possible issues with the XRENDER library hogging 6x6x6=216 of the
available colo(u)rs. Could this be part of this problem, and if so,
is there a way to disable it at runtime to test this theory?

Thanks,

   Julian

This is beginning to sound familiar.

A lot of people with low bit-depth displays began having trouble in
XFree86 4.2.0 because the RENDER extension in the server preallocates a
 color cube.

In fact, this color cube is 6x6x6, which means that 244 are already
 pulled out of the colormap.
 [...]

Since I do not think there is a way to tell the X server to disable the
RENDER extension or pre-allocate a smaller colormap, the best solution
probably is to just give depth 8 users a black-and-white logo.

 Thanks for following up.

OK, that makes sense. So changing the default /etc/X11/xdm/Xresources
would be adequate to close this bug report.

I'm not positive this is a bug:

 1) Do you have pex5 listed in the Modules Section of your
 XF86Config-4?

Yes, and xie (not that I know what they do ;-) Should I just delete
them?

 2) Does the above cause the server to crash?

No.

It wouldn't make sense for me to have xserver-xfree86 conflict with the
xext package, because some people might still want that package
installed, to use with the still-available XFree86 3.x servers.

Agreed.

I think what happened is that they were in 4.1.0, and all worked fine,
but they have been removed from 4.2.0, so suddenly xserver-xfree86 is
attempting to use the old 3.3.6 versions.

Hmph. xdm shouldn't refuse to start just because it can't allocate
enough colors for a silly cosmetic pixmap.

Agreed.

Are you *sure* that colormap exhaustion is the culprit?

Problem with starting xdm (it wouldn't). I've traced it down to the

Nobody should do that: if something goes wrong between the two

single command:
