Bug#830723: When X server start fails it ends up in an endless loop
Package: xserver-xorg Version: 1:7.7+7 Severity: important Hello, for more than one time i have the problem that when the X server fails to start it ends up in an loop to try to start! When you have a damaged vga card and change it you never get a simple console again. Sometimes the system doesn't react any more because it is somehow locked by the X server. Why this loop? In the past the X server tried to start and when it fails it prompted the error and you land on the console. Now the system behaviour is like in windows where the system get's unusable without an graphical frontend! Cheers Karsten -- Package-specific info: X server symlink status: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Jun 21 2015 /etc/X11/X -> /usr/bin/Xorg -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2401376 Feb 11 2015 /usr/bin/Xorg VGA-compatible devices on PCI bus: -- 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation GF108 [GeForce GT 430] [10de:0de1] (rev a1) /etc/X11/xorg.conf does not exist. /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d does not exist. Bug#774283: Solution for other users

This is really fatal! Here is an idea for other users who encounter the problem: When you are booting with grub you can manually edit the boot options in grub. https://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/html_node/gfxpayload.html Add "text" at the end of the kernel parameters to boot in a text console so that the X system will not be started. Then you can download and install the ATI driver in text mode. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-x-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Bug#774283: Problem identified and solved
Hello together, i did not install the backup and found the problem now. The ATI driver from March 2014 did not fit together with the updated X-Server package. I downloaded and installed the newest Catalyst driver from here and X is running now again: http://support.amd.com/de-de/download/desktop?os=Linux+x86 Version Omega (14.12) from 09.12.2014. So this bug can be closed now. But you should think about an solution for the problem, because after the upgrade you did not have the chance to see anything, because the graphic card was dead. When you have not another PC, network and a running SSH-Server on the system, you can't do anything to get it working again. This is really fatal! From my experience in the last year it is getting more and more difficult to get an working desktop system with running X and sound with Debian. There are problems with ATI and NVidia, such as https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=767678 Is there really no chance to get this problems covered? A failsafe system that has the possibilty to have X with a standard VGA resolution would be a milestone for Debian. I wish you a happy new year! The system is in usage so i have to wipe it and install an backup from the beginning of the month where everything was fine. But the screen is only black and also a TTY1 cannot be accessed locally! If this problem does not belong to the XServer, please move it to the correct package. Thanks.
