Bug#929862: x11proto-dev: core protocol spec

2019-06-01 Thread Kevin Ryde
Package: x11proto-dev
Version: 2018.4-4
Severity: wishlist

It'd be good if x11proto-dev included the core protocol spec
x11protocol.txt alongside the various extension .txt specs.
It isn't hiding elsewhere is it?, in which case a cross-ref.

x11proto-dev says Provides x11proto-core-dev where x11protocol.txt
last lived, which had me thinking to find it there.

Bug#909639: xdm: README.Debian on xdm-config file

2018-09-25 Thread Kevin Ryde
Package: xdm
Version: 1:1.1.11-3
Severity: minor
File: /usr/share/doc/xdm/README.Debian

README.Debian says

Xresources contains X resources that are designed to be specific to
sessions running under xdm. Note that this file does contain the
resource entries for xdm itself -- those are contained in the file
xdm-config.

I found this a little unclear, in as much as Xresources does in fact
contain resources for xdm itself (appearance). As a suggestion, maybe
something like (assuming it's correct! :),

/etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config contains X resources of xdm's
"DisplayManager" host options, including possibly different
filenames for the further files below. See the X(1) manual page for
more information about X resources, and the xdm(1) manual page for
documentation of the available xdm resources.

/etc/X11/xdm/Xresources contains X resources for xdm's login widget
appearance (including the Debian logo), and resources for external
programs which xdm may run (the external host "chooser"). These
resources are not present in the user's session once logged in (see
/etc/X11/Xresources for that).

I wouldn't mind seeing full filenames like /etc/X11/xdm/Xresources, at
least at their first appearance. I know the directory is described at
the start, but all these X related things start to look the same after a
while so the full may help the casual reader or cutting and pasting.

Yes. The core cursors live in some base part of the core and I think

Ah, I don't think I knew it included core as a theme. I'd say
/etc/X11/cursors/core.theme could be in a more base package.

Oh, now I'm not sure I know who actually reads the alternative. The
server on reset? All client programs (through libxcursor1)?

> But even then it would not solve your problem: xcursor-themes is

That's ok. It's probably proper for an add-on to be above the core,
since installing it usually means you want it (though that's not the
case with adwaita - it being brought in for the pics in gtk programs but
then puts global cursors).

2017-04-17 Thread Kevin Ryde
Package: libxcursor1
Version: 1:1.1.14-1+b4
Severity: wishlist

It'd be good to have an /etc/alternatives/x-cursor-theme choice which is
the standard cursor font, so that's available when other packages give
other themes.

I struck this when adwaita-icon-theme a while ago incorporated its
cursor font into that package, with irritating cursor animations and
stuff. adwaita-icon-theme is dragged in by gtk and things. Setting
/etc/alternatives/x-cursor-theme to /dev/null returns to the standard
cursors, but perhaps that's not really the right way.

I'm not sure whether an alternative would belong in libxcursor1 or some
other base package. It's ultimately libxcursor1 which reads chosen
cursors if I'm not mistaken, but maybe something else is responsible for
the paths.

xwud could also helpfully have a mailcap entry too. New proposed
debian/mime file below. xwud isn't the most sophisticated image viewer,
but xwd is its native format and on a minimal x11 install it could be
all that's available for xwd.

2013-09-18 Thread Kevin Ryde

Version: 7.7+1
Severity: wishlist

This is an idea for an /etc/mailcap entry for xmore, so for example

I get some joy from the lines of debian/mime below which dh_installmime

Bug#657215: [PATCH videoproto] Xvproto: fix xvEncodingInfo to match actual wire protocol

Am I right code is always supposed to use the "sz_" constants, not
sizeof? Not that that would be an excuse to break anything.

If in doubt I suppose could put the intended pad before, but leave the
pad at the end as well so the sizeof is unchanged. Not matching the
sz_, but at least not changed.

Ah dear, oops, forget that, no, they can't always be equal.

It still may be worth putting the "pad" field where it's meant to take
effect. The rule is to express internal padding explicitly rather than
rely on the compiler is it not?

Bug#657215: x11proto-video-dev: sizeof(xvEncodingInfo) vs sz_xvEncodingInfo

2012-01-24 Thread Kevin Ryde
Package: x11proto-video-dev
Version: 2.3.1-2
Severity: normal
File: /usr/include/X11/extensions/Xvproto.h

The program foo.c below with gcc 4.6.1-3 prints

sizeof(xvEncodingInfo) 24
sz_xvEncodingInfo  20

where if I'm not mistaken the two are supposed to be equal.

It looks like in the xvEncodingInfo the xvRational field is padded onto
a 4-byte boundary so

CARD32 encoding
CARD16 name_size
CARD16 width
CARD16 height

INT32  rate.num
INT32  rate.den
CARD16 pad

= 24 bytes

Perhaps since the rate is 2*INT32 the pad was always supposed to be
before, as

typedef struct {
  XvEncodingID encoding B32;
  CARD16 name_size B16;
  CARD16 width B16, height B16;
  CARD16 pad B16;
  xvRational rate;
} xvEncodingInfo;

The server circa 1.7.7 seems to spit out 20 bytes in that form. If I'm
not mistaken it uses sz_xvEncodingInfo rather than sizeof, so quietly
ignores the "pad" field at the end. Eg. reply from QueryEncodings

  000: 01d9 0600 0700  0100 d7bf 8243 0708  .C..
  010:   e63f 0d01   e43f 0d01  .?...?..
  020:   0800 fe07 fe07 0d01 0100
  030: 0100  5856 5f49 4d41 4745XV_IMAGE

The xlib XvQueryEncodings() looks like it uses sz_xvEncodingInfo too,
but I don't have anything with more than one encoding to try to provoke
it.

Presuming what the server sends is correct (or at least is much too late
to change now :-) then perhaps it'd be worth moving the "pad" field to
where it is actually in effect, making the struct size match what's
sent.

Dunno if that would have to rate as a break of binary compatibility.
Presumably yes strictly speaking if anyone exposed that struct in their
interface, but in practice I expect no if it's only ever meant as a
temporary to layout data on send or receive.

Is that "bytes_overflow" field the high 32-bits of the size? If so I
wonder if the multiplier is supposed to be 1 greater, ie. 4294967296 ==
2**32, or maybe a bit shift "<< 32".

The server code looks like it might send out high 32-bits,

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/tree/Xext/xres.c

has ProcXResQueryClientPixmapBytes()

#ifdef _XSERVER64
rep.bytes_overflow = bytes >> 32;

But I don't have 64-bits and 4Gb memory to try it out, and I couldn't
find a protocol spec to check ...

Bug#401944: libx11-dev: XDrawArc man page maths come out bad on tty

2006-12-06 Thread Kevin Ryde
Package: libx11-dev
Version: 2:1.0.3-4
Severity: normal
File: /usr/share/man/man3/XDrawArc.3.gz

On a tty, the eqn math bits in "man XDrawArc" come out looking like

[x+wi2th,y+hei2ht]
or
2n   for normal-angle in the range [32,2n]

which makes it pretty hard to understand.

Apparently gnu eqn and/or nroff aren't interested in trying to render
maths on a tty. It'd be nice if XDrawArc could have alternative bits
(".ie n" conditions) that come out better, "[x+width/2,y+height/2]"
and "[3*pi/2,2*pi]" etc.

xkbcomp(__mansuffix__)

substituted.

Bug#373138: xdm: man page auth files location

2006-06-12 Thread Kevin Ryde
Package: xdm
Version: 1:1.0.4-2
Severity: minor
File: /usr/share/man/man1/xdm.1x.gz

The xdm man page under "DisplayManager.authDir" and under the "FILES"
section shows /etc/X11/xdm as the location for the authorization
files, but they seem to actually go in /var/lib/xdm/authdir/authfiles.

Bug#373139: xterm: README.Debian on ncurses-term

2006-06-12 Thread Kevin Ryde
Package: xterm
Version: 210-3

README.Debian refers to the ncurses-term package for the xterm
terminfo definitions, but I see there's definitions in the
ncurses-base package these days. Perhaps it should be referring to
that one (assuming it has everything required).

Bug#369461: xspecs: text file versions of specs

2006-05-29 Thread Kevin Ryde
Package: xspecs

It'd be nice if text file renditions of the specs were in the package,
like it had in the past, so you can read stuff just on a text screen.

Just to chime in with my two cents worth, I'd say do nothing.

Anyone fiddling with standard commands has got to confine that to
their interactive shell (meaning using .bashrc or whatever), anything
else is almost certainly going to break lots of things besides startx
and friends.
