I have since removed and re-installed Debian, and am currently using
testing. I have not had the problem since.

I did some hunting through mailing lists at the time and found similar
reports (e.g., for BSD) from years ago, but without any real resolution.
Anyway, since I no longer have the problem and since I have no recipe to
reproduce it, you might as well close the bug report.

Bug#237574: using udev?

If you can't start gdm with /dev/input/mice, in all probability it is
because the kernel module 'mousedev' is not loaded. Along with the
'psmouse' module, that should give you a functional mouse.

(In case you are curious: 'mousedev' is the frontend, 'psmouse' is the
backend, 'input' is the glue between them, and is auto-loaded.)

Peter

Thank you! If I add a 'mousedev' line to /etc/modules, then gdm starts up
OK. I suppose this is a kernel-2.6 package bug then?

Interestingly enough, though, the mouse doesn't work. For whatever reason,
adding mousedev to /etc/modules causes psmouse to be not loaded. If I also
add a 'psmouse' line to /etc/modules, then X and the mouse both work fine.

Again, thanks,

If you're using udev with 2.6, you'll have /dev/input/mousen. Update
the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file with the appropriate entry.

I have /dev/input/mice, and /dev/input/mouse0 to mouse4. I changed the entry
for the mouse in the "Input devices" section of the XF86Config-4 file to try
each of those devices, but none of them made any difference. Still can't
start gdm.

Bug#237574: #237574 X cannot start under kernel 2.6.3

Since kernel 2.6.3 has recently become available to testing, I installed
it

and booted. The kernel was unable to startup gdm, and I also could not
"startx". The 2.4 kernels do not appear to have this problem. The kernel
log
complains about errors with XFree86, so that is why I am submitting it
under

this package.

I guess, you don't have /dev/psaux available on your system.
(maybe due to the new kernel + devfs ...)
Please check, if there's /dev/misc/psaux.

if true, then do a:
ln -s /dev/misc/psaux /dev/psaux

and see if X works again.

I checked, and there _is_ an entry for /dev/psaux. There is not, however, an
entry for /dev/misc/psaux.

Bug#213851: Updating xfree86 on testing breaks some fonts

2003-10-02 Thread Mason Thomas
Package: xfree86
Version: 4.2.1-11

After upgrading from xfree86 4.2.1-6 to xfree86 4.2.1-11 (during an
apt-get upgrade), I have encountered font problems with various X
packages. For example, running xcalc from a terminal results in the
following error message:

Warning: Cannot convert string "-adobe-symbol-*-*-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-*-*"
to type FontStruct
Warning: Unable to load any usable ISO8859 font
Warning: Unable to load any usable ISO8859 font
Segmentation fault

I receive a similar error from gv (with a different font listed) and
xfontsel (no font listed), and other X programs.

xdm also starts up with a much bigger login dialog box than before.

If I run the following command, then I no longer get the errors:

xset -fp /usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1

However, I don't see why I should have to do that. Here is a dump of
'xset q' (before doing the above path removal):
