After upgrading xserver-xorg-video-savage from 1:2.1.3-5 to current
unstable (1:2.2.1-1), the system freezes immediately with a black screen
(no flashing cursor) while trying to start X, without any recoverable
error messages. Changing DefaultColorDepth from 24 to 16 bit shows no
  results.

As disabling 02_temporary_revert_pciaccess.diff from 1:2.1.3-5 seems to
result in the same system freeze, re- enabling it for 1:2.2.1-1 and
  dropping conflicting upstream commits:

  fd2a598e64a522c028a20444379fa200a5724e62
results in a working system again.

Is the machine completely dead with the plain 2.2.1 driver? Can you
 ping? ssh? catch the log?

I was kind of expecting that upstream did not fix in 2.2.1 everything we
disabled in 2.1.3-5. Let's bump the severity to prevent 2.2.1 from
entering testing, it's better to keep 2.1.3-5 for now.

I am adding to CC 2 person that may experience the same problem since
2.1.3-4 was broken for them. Joseph and Pascal, can you report back
whether savage 2.2.1 from unstable is broken for you as well?

Hello,

using 2.2.1 from unstable, without problems, on my laptop. I reported
problems a long time ago, and the driver works fine since.

A few hints: which version of gcc do you use to compile the kernel ?
I remember having troubles with gcc-4.3, while gcc-4.2 is fine.

Regards

Pascal

Bug#451219: xserver-xorg-video-savage: X failure with 1:2.1.3-4

2007-11-14 Thread Pascal A. Dupuis
Package: xserver-xorg-video-savage
Version: 1:2.1.3-4
Severity: important

Hello,
upon installing and restarting X with this savage driver, I got a
totally broken X. The right half of the screen was filled with junk
coming from other apps, there was no border around the windows, text on
the button did appear after the mouse cursor passed on it, and other
nastiness. Only terminals in the left half were usable
Downgrading to 1:2.1.3-1 cured the problem.

Best regards

Bug#407199: xserver-xorg-video-savage: (II) SAVAGE(0): [drm] drmSetBusid failed

The patch that you were referring to in bugzilla.freedesktop.org seems
to already be included in the savage driver that you were using (2.1.2) [1].

Do you still get the following error?
(II) SAVAGE(0): [drm] DRM interface version 1.0
 (II) SAVAGE(0): [drm] drmSetBusid failed (9, pci::01:00.0),
 Permission denied
(EE) SAVAGE(0): [drm] DRIScreenInit failed. Disabling DRI.
 (EE) SAVAGE(0): DRI isn't enabled

I don't think it could be related to a gcc version mismatch between the
kernel and drm driver module since both are built and shipped within the
same package. If you compiled your own kernel, you should check that
drm, savage and agp modules are compiled loaded. Also check that
permissions on /dev/dri/* are ok? (should be 666 from your xorg.conf)

I have a config with two X displays, and it seems only the first one
can get DRI functions. Said message appears in the log file of the
second display.

Are we even sure that this hardware supports DRI on both heads? The
manpage doesn't seem to say that dual head is supported on this hardware :)

 Brice

I don't speak about dual-headed. I have two X servers on the machine,
running on different VTs on the same hardware and display. Only the
first one gets DRI support.

Bug#399972: x11-common: installs breaks if xorg subdir are symlinked

2006-11-23 Thread Pascal A. Dupuis
Package: x11-common
Version: 1:7.1.0-7
Severity: important

Hello,

the preinst script of xserver-common contains those lines:
 # symlink - dir transition
for i in include share lib; do
if [ -L /usr/${i}/X11 ]; then
  rm /usr/${i}/X11
fi
  done

I installed xorg on another partition due to lack of disk space, and
symlinked /usr/{share,lib,include}/X11 to point to the right place. With
this approach, the upgrade of x11-common leave the system half broken,
as f.i. there is no more locale data. Would it be possible to either:
1) put a message BEFORE breaking the symlink
2) leave the option to enable or not changing the symlink to a real dir
3) analysing more thoroughfully the kind of link (what do you want to
correct exactly) before deciding it has to be changed.

I understand that were are close to an important transition, but please
at least warn before changing the directories structure.

Thanking you in advance

Pascal Dupuis

Bug#397323: xkb-data: AltGr key not working anymore

2006-11-06 Thread Pascal A. Dupuis
Package: xkb-data
Version: 0.9-4
Severity: normal

Hello,

since the upgrade around October, 20th (I only performed it today), the AltGr
key does not produce third level symbols. Setup is as follows:
Section InputDevice
Identifier Generic Keyboard
Driver kbd
Option CoreKeyboard
Option XkbRules xorg
Option XkbModel pc105
Option XkbLayout be
Option XkbOptionslv3:ralt_switch
# Option XkbCompat pc
EndSection

I added te XkbOptions after searching google on similar problems, as
well as XkbCompat. No change.

The Xorg.0.log contains around the end:

(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device Generic Keyboard (type: KEYBOARD)
xkb_keycodes { include xfree86+aliases(azerty) };
xkb_types{ include complete };
xkb_compatibility{ include complete };
xkb_symbols  { include pc(pc105)+be+level3(ralt_switch) };
xkb_geometry { include pc(pc105) };
(WW) Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap

I also noticed there was a few remaining dirs from the past:
/etc/X11/xkb, renaming it to xkb.orig didn't help either. Any hint ?
Which supplemental info should I provide ?

Best regards

Pascal Dupuis

Bug#390162: xorg: conflicting locale settings and keyboard input

2006-09-29 Thread Pascal A. Dupuis
Package: xorg
Version: 1:7.0.22
Severity: normal

Hello,

I switched recently to utf8 encoding, but I would like to keep some
terminals as pure iso-8859-1 displays. In utf8-aware terminal, there
are no problems, but accentuated letters typed in iso-8859-1 terminal
are ignored at the shell level.

I proceed as follows:
-launch xterm +u8, which 'bash' as shell. There is nothing about utf8
in .Xressources or .Xdefaults
-stty -a shows the terminal does not support utf8 (-iutf8)
-locale is set as: export LANG=fr_BE.ISO-8859-1
-'locale' report everything is iso-8859-1
- launching programs does not generate any warning about missing
locales
- xorg keyboard configured as 105 keys, Belgian
- xev window show the code generated for é is eacute, 0xe9
- typing 'é' at the bash level does not produce anything, even with
output-meta and convert-meta set to on
- in vi, typing 'é' results in the double char 0xc3 0xa9 (utf-8)
- displaying this file with 'more' shows two graphic chars
- recode utf8..iso-8859-1 file and displaying again with more shows
the right character, 'é'

It seems that the problems results from conflicting locales:
-xterm locales from its environment are utf-8
-bash locales from its environment are iso8859-1

The problem disappears if xterm is launched as
env LANG=en_US.ISO-8859-1 xterm

Would it be possible to sort this conflict ?

TIA

 Ditch the non-CorePointer? :)

I removed the AlwaysCore and/or SendCoreEvents, and now it works.
I mean, both built-in and external mouses give cursor movements,
and I finally get each button to produce a ButtonPress/ButtonRelease
event, no more mixing between button1 and button3.

I always wondered what is this SendCoreEvent good for ?

Bug#374652: xserver-xorg-input-mouse: trouble trying to permute mouse buttons (lefthanded)

2006-06-20 Thread Pascal A. Dupuis
Package: xserver-xorg-input-mouse
Version: 1:1.0.4-3
Severity: normal

Hello,

excerpt from xorg.conf:
Section InputDevice
Identifier Configured Mouse
Driver mouse
Option CorePointer
Option Device/dev/input/mice
Option Protocol ImPS/2
Option Emulate3Buttons false
Option ZAxisMapping 4 5
EndSection

This is for a USB mouse. If I try to use it lefthanded, either using
xfce4 mouse setup or with xmodmad -e pointer = 3 2 1 4 5 6 7 8 9,
xev shows this strange behaviour:

ButtonPress event, serial 28, synthetic NO, window 0x361,

while the normal behaviour is:

ButtonPress event, serial 28, synthetic NO, window 0x361,
root 0x4c, subw 0x0, time 4053337678, (78,103), root:(501,396),

ButtonRelease event, serial 28, synthetic NO, window 0x361,
root 0x4c, subw 0x0, time 4053337790, (78,103), root:(501,396),
state 0x100, button 1, same_screen YES

That is, with the left-handed config, pressing either button 1 or 3
generates both events. Any clue ?

Bug#342361: savage: fails if savagefb is used in the kernel

2005-12-07 Thread Pascal A. Dupuis
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11
Severity: normal

Hello,
after searching a lot, I finally found the the X.Org savage driver
doesn't mix well with the kernel savagefb, even with
Option UseFBDev true

Typical symptoms are that each text appears garbled at the top of the
screen. After a few 10s of second the machine hang. Running without
savagefb cure this.

Maybe this should be documented somewhere, during the installation
procedure ?

Best regards

Bug#326755: xserver-xorg: still crashes with savage

2005-11-25 Thread Pascal A. Dupuis
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-7
Followup-For: Bug #326755

Hello,
I have a laptop with pretty close the same config, except the chip is
VGA compatible controller: S3 Inc. VT8636A [ProSavage KN133] AGP4X VGA
Controller (TwisterK) (rev 01)

The only difference with the reported config is about the AGP mode,
that I modified as :
  Driver savage
  Option UseFBDev true
-- Option AGPMode 4

So ... I tried
testing 6.8.2.dfsg.1-7
unstable 6.8.2.dfsg.1-10
experimental 6.8.99.902.dfsg.1-1: i386

The three fails:
testing: all the text are pushed upward. Computer close to stop (disk accesses)
unstable: loads in a normal amout of time, some graphics OK, most text NOK
experimental: most graphics OK, some text OK.

FYI ... the 6.8.2 xorg from openbsd3.8 works like a charm, and there
are no significant differences between both xorg.conf

Best regards

Bug#286631: xbase-clients: the xconsole menu should use sudo

2004-12-21 Thread Pascal A. Dupuis
Package: xbase-clients
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-8
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Hello,

a small problem with the menu entry for xconsole in xbase-clients:
normal user can't/shouldn't use it, but with the actual conf, only
root can use this from the window menu. Why not define it using sudo,
so that selected users can access it directly from the menu ? Patch
included to show how I implemented it locally.

Best regards
