Bug#801081: xserver-xorg-video-qxl: QXL video unusable due to performance

2015-10-05 Thread Pat Roberts
Package: xserver-xorg-video-qxl
Version: 0.1.1-2+b1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

When QXL video is selected in a virt-manager Debian Jessie or Wheezy guest, the
performance of a whole class of applications is so bad it renders the driver
unusable, up to appearing locked up.

The most obvious is any browser based on late Iceweasel, Firefox, XChat, and
others. The apps will load but as soon as scrolling through elements the
performance will slow to a crawl and completely unusable. There are artifacts
all throughout the windows and sometimes strange broken resizing which
sometimes crashed my client.

This is happening from Debian Jessie host, Fedora 22 host with Debian guests. I
am forced to switch to Cirrus video driver for all Debian guests, but one of my
guests only supports the QXL driver thus I cannot use that guest. With the
Cirrus driver there are no special problems with Iceweasel/Firefox/other.

I have tried setting the following in the VM definition files:

My intuition was that "streaming mode off" should have fixed it, because from
the visuals it looks as if spice/QXL is trying to compress the browser window,
but spice/QXL in the guest appears to ignore these settings (though it is
passed to qemu on the command line). No effect.

There is a Fedora bug which sounds very similar and using a similar version of
QXL as found in Debian Jessie:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1020393

This can be reproduced by installing a Debian Jessie guest with XFCE or KDE in
virt-manager, installing Iceweasel from jessie-backports
(http://mozilla.debian.net/), making a web search on a heavily loaded page, and
trying to scroll. Also installing XChat inside KDE the menus are unbrowsable.

Host CPUs are fast intels with 8GB ram+.

I would love to be able to simply disable spice compression/streaming
completely but the driver appears to ignore the settings above.

Bug#761877: xserver-xorg: Updated Xorg from Testing fails to start correctly

2014-09-16 Thread Pat Parson
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.7+7
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,
After updating the Xorg packages from Stable to Testing xorg will no longer
start and bring up the desktop. If I run the script to set the resolution as
part of launching the display manager the gtk-greeter loads momentarily and
then crashes immediately & repeatedly as apparently Xorg then restarts. Logs
seem to indicate that the display manager cannot find a display to use. I am
unable to determine if this is a problem with the ATI drivers. Still
using display manager from stable so there should be no problem there.

Bug#712545: Bug severe: Updated X crashes immediately after loading

2014-09-09 Thread Pat Parson
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.7+7
Followup-For: Bug #712545

Dear Maintainer,
*** Please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?
Updated Xorg using aptitude to latest testing branch.
Upon restarting lightdm the Xserver crashes after loading the initial
GTK-greeter screen, then reloads repeatedly which makes it impossible
to login to the machine without rebooting into recovery mode.

Bug#392618: Unneeded define in debian/rules.

2006-10-12 Thread Pat Suwalski

Michael Banck wrote:

FWIW, you can fix the build with a slightly different define, see what
e.g. Andres did at
http://mouth.squishy.cc/~dilinger/xorg-bpo/libx11_1.0.3-0bpo1.diff.gz

Good thing that horrible -D can go away, though.

Indeed, the bpo fix would work. In the past, I just changed it in the
one and only C file that actually uses it. But yes, definitely nice to
not need it at all.

Bug#392618: Unneeded define in debian/rules.

2006-10-12 Thread Pat Suwalski

Package: libx11
Version: 2:1.0.3-1

Hello,

In the past, a -DLIBXCURSOR was required in debian/rules to set the
Xcursor library to libXcursor.so.1.

This define would break the build in Debian Sarge.

The define is no longer required, since the upstream source appears to
have changed it to libXcursor.so.1 right in the C source.

Bug#384073: debian/rules defined bad/useless CFLAGS.

2006-08-21 Thread Pat Suwalski

Package: twm
Version: 1.0.1-4

The twm package defines CFLAGS in the debian/rules file:

CFLAGS += -DLIBXCURSOR=\\\"libXcursor.so.1\\\"

These CFLAGS are also in the libX11 rules file. They break when building
on Sarge, but that's not the issue.

Unlike libX11, LIBXCURSOR is not used anywhere in the twm source. The
flag should be removed.

xmore in xbase-clients_7.1.ds-3

2006-08-17 Thread Pat Suwalski

Hello,

I'm working on testing building X.org 7.1 as it currently is in Debian.
I came across a problem with building xmore in both the 7.0
xbase-clients package and 7.1 package.

The build error is as follows:

gcc -Wall -g -O2 -o xmore xmore-xmore.o -lXaw7 -lXmu -lXt -lX11
-lSM -lICE

xmore-xmore.o(.text+0x64): In function `printshellDestroyXtProc':
./xmore-X11R7.0-1.0.1/xmore.c:153: undefined reference to
`XawPrintDialogClosePrinterConnection'

collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[2]: *** [xmore] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory
`/root/x71/main/xbase-clients-7.1.ds/xmore-X11R7.0-1.0.1-obj-i486-linux-gnu'

make[1]: *** [all] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory
`/root/x71/main/xbase-clients-7.1.ds/xmore-X11R7.0-1.0.1-obj-i486-linux-gnu'

make: *** [build-stamp] Error 1

"XawPrintDialogClosePrinterConnection" is defined in printdialog.h,
which is only included when USE_XPRINT is enabled. The xmore component
is built explicitly with --disable-xprint.

My workaround was to ifdef the line in the function:

static void
printshellDestroyXtProc(Widget w, XtPointer client_data, XtPointer callData)
{
#ifdef USE_XPRINT
XawPrintDialogClosePrinterConnection(printdialog, False);
#endif
}

Anyway, I don't understand how this actually built in Debian's build
farm, but this is probably an upstream thing.
