Bug#487906: Lenny Beta2 on PowerPC - strange video mode after reboot

2011-01-30 Thread Rick Thomas
The machine in question is at my workplace. I'll try a full-up
squeeze/kde install into a spare partition when I get a chance.
Hopefully sometime this week if the (NorthEast USA) weather co-operates.

could you please tell us how it goes with the X stack from

Looks like your keyboard is added correctly. It shows up as two
devices
though for some reason. Which one produces events? Does commenting
out

the XKBMODEL=macintosh line in /etc/default/keyboard change anything
(after a reboot, so the change is picked up by udev)?

Cheers,

Commenting out that line did not change anything after a reboot.

I re-installed squeeze on a spare partition, and everything is back to
normal when I boot from that partition. Go figure!

Bug#567756: xserver-xorg-input-all: keyboard not working after squeeze upgrade

2010-02-07 Thread Rick Thomas

Now here's an observation that may help...

The Macintosh USB keyboard has an "eject" key in the upper right hand
corner. It has a symbol on it that looks like a triangle with an
underline (commonly used for "eject" on audio CD players and video DVD
players).

Even though the rest of the keyboard is non-responsive when X is active,
that key (the eject) works reliably!!!

Is it being recognized at a lower level than the others?

Here's another observation...

Very occasionally, once in a long while -- when I hit a keyboard key
(other than eject), it will echo on the screen. But only for one
key-hit -- then it immediately goes back to being unresponsive.

Here's yet one more...

This box is running Squeeze. I have a box running Sid right next to it
(infact the two machines share a keyboard and monitor via a KVM switch)
and the Sid box does not have this problem. The versions of the xserver
software on the two machines are identical, incase that helps...

This sounds related. I tried a couple of variants of drz's solution,
but none of them helped.

Hi there

I just updated my squeeze installation on a powerbook 4,5 and
rebooted.

After reboot I couldnt login into kde because I couldnt type anything.
Keyboard function was gone.

My Workaround:
I switched to console mode via kdm menu
then I added the following to /etc/xorg.conf

Section "ServerFlags"
   Option "DontZap" "off"
   Option "AutoAddDevices""off"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
   Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
   Driver "kbd"
   Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
   Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
   Option "XkbLayout" "de"
   Option "XkbVariant""nodeadkeys"
   Option "XkbOptions""lv3:lwin_switch"
EndSection

After a /etc/init.d/hal restart and another /etc/init.d/kdm restart
I could

login again.
Dont know if the InputDevice part is needed, after inserting the
first part I

could type again (in X)

Package: xorg
Version: 1:7.3+18
Severity: important

I recently installed Lenny on a Mac Blue&White with an ATI 3D Rage
Pro video card.

When X starts up the monitor displays a message "out of range"
indicating that the
computer is feeding it stuff it can't handle. (This message is
coming from the
monitor, itself -- not the X software). The image on the monitor
shimmers and

jumps and looks like snow in a high wind.

I've tried several tweeks to the xorg.conf that have worked on other
machines
with similar problems. None of them seem to help. I'm attaching the
most

recent non-working xorg.conf. I'm also attaching the Xorg.0.log.

lspci -v says this about the video card:

Add
Driver "r128"
to your Device section for now. The server is autoloading "radeon"
instead of "r128", I am fixing this.

Brice

I did that. X starts now. But it still thinks my screen is 800x600.
The Gnome "screen resolution preferences" does not offer me any other
options than 800x600, 60Hz. The screen (A DELL 2100FP) is capable of
1600x1200 and the video card is capable of driving it at that
resolution if I add the following two lines to the Monitor section:

   HorizSync 31-80
   VertRefresh 56-76

Though, the gdm login screen is displayed at 1920x1200, which makes
the pixels seem high and narrow, rather than square. It corrects to
1600x1200 after logging in.

Interestingly, if I do that, I get an error dialog box saying:
Nautilus can't be used now,
due to an unexpected error from Bonobo
when attempting to locate the factory.
Killing bonobo-activation-server and
restarting Nautilus may help fix the problem.

If I click "OK", then Nautilus starts and everything is normal... Go
figure!

Let me know if I can test anything for you...

As I stated in the original bug report: If I make the following

$ diff xorg.conf xorg.conf.ORIG

While it uses a "Modes" instead of a PreferredMode+ModeLine, it may
be a clue. Do you still need me to test it with PreferredMode+ModeLine?

That looks quite likely.

This is certainly an issue in X.Org and not in the installer and this
report should really have been reassigned to the X.Org maintainers
long

ago. Doing so now.

Can you try again with the ORIG config file and the latest
xserver-xorg-core from unstable (1.4.2)?

Bug#468103: DISPLAY variable not set in ssh session

is made, but the DISPLAY variable is not being set.

Anybody know why?

No. But using ssh -v might give some clues. One extra potential
reason:

the target box does not have (the utility) xauth on it.

That was it. I did
aptitude install xauth
and everything was fine.

It looks like the xterm package needs to depend on the xauth package

What package should a bug report for this go to?

Thanks!

Bug#415543: xorg: xserver crashes on beige G3 PowerMac

The question behind the question was (an I apologize for not asking
it directly the first time around), in light of my "real" life
situation, is your "real" life situation likely to allow you to take
a look at this problem in a couple of weeks?

If not, I can try to hurry-up the things I need to do to get the
machine out of storage and available for experiments. But if it's
convenient for you, I can take it at a more sedate pace. So we can
(perhaps) do a better job of tracking down the problem.

Debian cares much more about non-x86 architectures than many other
distributions. However, since few people have powerpc, it takes
time to

debug when you need to find somebody with knowledge to reproduce the
problem first :(

Exactly. And I'm very glad you are willing to take the time to help
me figure out this bug.

Many thanks!

Bug#415543: xorg: xserver crashes on beige G3 PowerMac

2007-05-27 Thread Rick Thomas

It will take a little while for me to get to this. I put the machine
in storage when Etch went "live". If there's still interest in the
issue, I'll get it back out and we can do any experiments you want to
do.

Unfortunately, "real" life is taking a bit more time than usual
recently (my boss got promoted and I'm down and dirty with getting
his replacement installed...) so it may be a week or two before I can
get to it.

Is that OK?

Rick

PS: I'd sort of assumed that there was almost no interest in Debian
for OldWorld PowerMacs, and not much more for PowerPC in general. Am
I wrong?

It looks like you are using the fbdev driver on an ATI board. Did you
try the ATI driver?

Bug#413424: xserver-xorg: xserver fails to start because of resource conflict on PowerMac beige G3 (OldWorld)

2007-03-04 Thread Rick Thomas
Package: xserver-xorg

Configuration is bog-standard PowerMac beige G3 tower (OldWorld) with ATI video
controller on the motherboard.
Details are in the attached configuration files and log files.

I've tried this with both "ati" driver and "fbdev" driver. Both give the same
results.
