Bug#442921: xorg: X crashes on starting most clients
Package: xorg Version: 1:7.3+2 Severity: normal There were a lot of upgrades of X-related packages today, and since then I couldn't get gdm to run. After fiddling around I found a lot of things that didn't run. I narrowed it down somewhat: $ X 1> output.txt Works just fine, X starts. After switching to tty2: $ DISPLAY=:0.0 xclock Nothing happens. Peace and quiet. Then when I switch back to X it crashes. I've tried this with two different video drivers, the nv driver and the closed source nvidia driver. It happens with almost any most clients, however not with xlogo, xeyes or oclock. I'm attaching output.txt, created as described above. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.22 Locale: LANG=sv_SE.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=sv_SE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages xorg depends on: ii gnome-terminal [x-ter 2.18.1-1 The GNOME 2 terminal emulator appl ii libgl1-mesa-glx [libg 7.0.1-2A free implementation of the OpenG ii libglu1-mesa 7.0.1-2The OpenGL utility library (GLU) ii type-handling [not+sp 0.2.21 dpkg architecture generation scrip ii xbase-clients 1:7.3+2miscellaneous X clients - metapack ii xfonts-100dpi 1:1.0.0-4 100 dpi fonts for X ii xfonts-75dpi 1:1.0.0-4 75 dpi fonts for X ii xfonts-base 1:1.0.0-5 standard fonts for X ii xfonts-scalable 1:1.0.0-6 scalable fonts for X ii xkb-data 1.0~cvs.20070916-1 X Keyboard Extension (XKB) configu ii xserver-xorg 1:7.3+2the X.Org X server ii xterm [x-terminal-emu 229-1 X terminal emulator ii xutils1:7.3+2X Window System utility programs m Versions of packages xorg recommends: ii xorg-docs 1:1.4-2Miscellaneous documentation for th -- no debconf information X.Org X Server 1.4.0 Release Date: 5 September 2007 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 Build Operating System: Linux Debian (xorg-server 2:1.4-2) Current Operating System: Linux localhost 2.6.22 #1 Wed Sep 12 10:49:00 CEST 2007 i686 Build Date: 16 September 2007 02:37:21PM Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org to make sure that you have the latest version. Bug#364545: Further investigation
It seems that when no server arguments are given in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf, the default arguments include -dpi 96 instead of just leaving it up to the xserver to decide the dpi. That means the only way to have the xserver use the values of xorg.conf, or the values read from the monitor, is to specify the arguments to the server and leave out -dpi. The arguments need to be specified with 0=/path/to/X something -dpi 78 -something, and not with command= like earlier. I think it's a bad thing that the default behaviour when there are no specified arguments is to give a dpi value to the server. If I'm wrong and this is indeed a good thing, then it should at least be more clearly documented. Since this is a gdm problem, I believe this bug report should be moved to gdm. -- Vincent Lönngren <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Bug#364545: xserver-xorg: DisplaySize ignored
mån 2006-04-24 klockan 16:25 +0200 skrev Michel Dänzer: > Probably, I don't know them all either offhand though. Does ps show that > the X server is passed -dpi? > > Yes, it's passed the command line option, and it is started by gdm. I tried starting it with startx instead, and there was no 96 DPI problem. I guess whatever is wrong is in gdm. I recursively grepped /etc/gdm for 96 but found nothing, so I have no idea what to do about it. Bug#364545: xserver-xorg: DisplaySize ignored
Package: xserver-xorg Version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-6 Severity: normal The X server used to query the monitor for it's physical dimensions, and everything was just fine. Now it seems that DPI is somehow set to 96, and the dimensions are modified to fit that, which makes both the DPI and the dimensions wrong. I tried to set the dimensions explicitly as described in the FAQ, but those values seem to be ignored. Since the value 96 has been mentioned as a reasonable default value for some time, I'm guessing that the default value has been changed and that something went wrong in the process so it overrides values read from EDID and even from an explicitly set DisplaySize. Since I mostly run GNOME, where I have set the DPI value in the font preferences thingie, I didn't notice that anything was wrong until today - I'm not sure how long it has been this way. The driver is commercial and not supported, but has not been changed in a long time - the DPI values used to get set properly with the same driver in the past. -- Package-specific info: Contents of /var/lib/xfree86/X.roster: xserver-xorg /etc/X11/X target unchanged from checksum in /var/lib/xfree86/X.md5sum.
