I'll try after 1/6, when I have access to that system again.

Installing an older version of the library, something like that?

Bug#442921: xorg: X crashes on starting most clients

2007-09-17 Thread Vincent Lönngren
Package: xorg
Version: 1:7.3+2
Severity: normal

There were a lot of upgrades of X-related packages today, and since then
I couldn't get gdm to run. After fiddling around I found a lot of
things that didn't run. I narrowed it down somewhat:

$ X 1> output.txt

Works just fine, X starts. After switching to tty2:

$ DISPLAY=:0.0 xclock

Nothing happens. Peace and quiet. Then when I switch back to X it
crashes. I've tried this with two different video drivers, the nv driver
and the closed source nvidia driver. It happens with almost any most
clients, however not with xlogo, xeyes or oclock.

I'm attaching output.txt, created as described above.

2007-05-01 Thread Vincent Lönngren

Today I found that the EDID values are used instead of the values from the
DisplaySize directive in xorg.conf. That's
not how it used to be. Passing a -dpi argument to the server still overrides
everything.

Sigh. That was a little bit premature. The important things - switching
users and so on - are working now, hooray! it's also possible to use
CTRL-ALT-F8. However, CTRL-ALT-F9 causes the same crash. I have
absolutely no idea what the difference is between those to VTs in this
case, but there it is.

I tried it a couple of times with the xserver-xorg-core in experimental,

It's still there. xedit displays the warnings and aborts. xfontsel just
displays the warnings. As far as I can tell, nothing has changed.

Bug#385803: twm: Leaves garbage on the screen when the console is switched

2006-09-03 Thread Vincent Lönngren
Package: twm
Version: 1:1.0.1-4
Severity: normal

I couldn't think of a good title for this bug...

When a window is opened, there is a sort of "template" for the window
which follows the cursor until the user clicks to indicate where it is
to be placed. If console switching takes place while the template is
shown, such as CTRL+ALT+F*, and then back to X again, an image of the
template will be left on the desktop. This does not cause any usability
problems, it just doesn't look good.

Bug#369620: xfonts-encodings: Same message here

2006-06-10 Thread Vincent Lönngren
Package: xfonts-encodings
Version: 1:1.0.0-5
Followup-For: Bug #369620

I've been getting this message from a number of applications, including
xdvi and xfontsel, since the X11R7 transition. Mostly the message is
just output but the application works anyway, but somtimes it does not.
This is the output of xedit (no, I do not use xedit, I just tried to
start it to see what happens):

Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion
Warning: Unable to load any usable fontset
Error: Aborting: no fontset found

Of course it's possible that my font configuration is wrong, but in that
case it somehow went wrong during the transition.

It's not a libice-dev bug, but I believe it's a libice6 bug. The libs
(libICE.a libICE.so libICE.so.6 libICE.so.6.4) are in /usr/X11R6/lib,
and no other files are since the transition. Isn't the bug that libice6
wasn't transitioned with the rest of them?

Bug#364545: Further investigation

2006-04-29 Thread Vincent Lönngren
It seems that when no server arguments are given in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf,
the default arguments include -dpi 96 instead of just leaving it up to
the xserver to decide the dpi. That means the only way to have the
xserver use the values of xorg.conf, or the values read from the
monitor, is to specify the arguments to the server and leave out -dpi.
The arguments need to be specified with 0=/path/to/X something -dpi 78
-something, and not with command= like earlier.

I think it's a bad thing that the default behaviour when there are no
specified arguments is to give a dpi value to the server. If I'm wrong
and this is indeed a good thing, then it should at least be more clearly
documented.

Since this is a gdm problem, I believe this bug report should be moved
to gdm.

Package: xdm

The path according to /etc/X11/Xservers is /usr/bin/X. According to the debconf

can't be started with "/etc/init.d/xdm

Bug#364545: xserver-xorg: DisplaySize ignored

Yes, it's passed the command line option, and it is started by gdm. I tried
starting it with startx instead, and there was no 96 DPI problem. I guess
whatever is wrong is in gdm. I recursively grepped /etc/gdm for 96 but found
nothing, so I have no idea what to do about it. Anyway, it seems the bug should
belong to gdm.

Bug#364545: xserver-xorg: DisplaySize ignored

2006-04-23 Thread Vincent Lönngren
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-6
Severity: normal

The X server used to query the monitor for it's physical dimensions, and
everything was just fine. Now it seems that DPI is somehow set to 96,
and the dimensions are modified to fit that, which makes both the DPI
and the dimensions wrong.

I tried to set the dimensions explicitly as described in the FAQ, but
those values seem to be ignored.

Since the value 96 has been mentioned as a reasonable default value for
some time, I'm guessing that the default value has been changed and that
something went wrong in the process so it overrides values read from
EDID and even from an explicitly set DisplaySize.

Since I mostly run GNOME, where I have set the DPI value in the font
preferences thingie, I didn't notice that anything was wrong until today
- I'm not sure how long it has been this way. The driver is commercial
and not supported, but has not been changed in a long time - the DPI
values used to get set properly with the same driver in the past.
