Bug#784791: Haswell integrated graphics output confusion
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel Version: 2:2.21.15-2+b2 Severity: normal Hi, At home, I have 1920x1200 monitor which I connect to my laptop using a port replicator and a DVI cable. At work, I have a 1920x1080 monitor which I connect to my laptop using a port replicator and a VGA cable. If I restart the laptop or the X server between undocking at home and re-docking at work, everything works fine. If I undock the laptop at home, suspend it, and re-dock at work, then this is not the case, with the X server confused as to what to do. I've seen various types of confusion, including: - The laptop screen and external monitor being set to the correct resolution, but the --left-of option being set on the laptop not being respected - The laptop screen and external monitor being set to the same resolution - The external monitor being set to an incorrect resolution (i.e., something smaller than 1920x1080), but the rest of the 1920x1080 screen size being included in the virtual desktop as a sort of gap between the external monitor and internal monitor (i.e., the internal screen would still be at the offset as expected for a FullHD resolution, but the external monitor would not be at a FullHD resolution). - When accidentally calling the script for my home setup at work (even if no DVI connection is hooked up to the port replicator at work), similar confusion would occur. If you need any further information, please ask. -- Package-specific info: X server symlink status: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Mar 11 17:53 /etc/X11/X - /usr/bin/Xorg -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2401376 Feb 11 01:35 /usr/bin/Xorg VGA-compatible devices on PCI bus: -- 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0416] (rev 06) /etc/X11/xorg.conf does not exist. /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d does not exist. Bug#544518: A way for --prop to not take half a second
Package: x11-xserver-utils Version: 7.4+2 Severity: wishlist File: /usr/bin/xrandr Hi, wou...@celtic:~$ time xrandr --prop [...xrandr output snipped...] real0m0.444s user0m0.004s sys 0m0.008s I currently have a shell script that does the following: BL=$(xrandr --prop|awk '/BACKLIGHT:/{print $2}') with the intention of then being able to use that to compute stuff and set the new value, and hook that to the XF86MonBrightnessDown and ...Up keys as a hotkey. However, due to the fact that xrandr spends almost half a second waiting on the X server for information that I don't need, and combined with the fact that I don't see any way for me to change the set of data that xrandr requests from the X server, this script is nearly unusable. There could be alternate solutions to this wishlist item; e.g., it would help if I would be able to tell xrandr that the X server has to increase the value of a property relative to its current value with a value relative to its valid range, or some such (say, a command similar to 'increase the value of the BACKLIGHT property on the LVDS output by 10% of the total range). -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (500, 'stable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.30-1-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=nl_BE.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=nl_BE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages x11-xserver-utils depends on: ii cpp 4:4.3.3-9 The GNU C preprocessor (cpp) ii libc6 2.9-25 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libice6 2:1.0.5-1 X11 Inter-Client Exchange library ii libsm62:1.1.1-1 X11 Session Management library ii libx11-6 2:1.2.2-1 X11 client-side library ii libxau6 1:1.0.4-2 X11 authorisation library ii libxaw7 2:1.0.6-1 X11 Athena Widget library ii libxext6 2:1.0.4-1 X11 miscellaneous extension librar ii libxi62:1.2.1-2 X11 Input extension library ii libxmu6 2:1.0.4-2 X11 miscellaneous utility library ii libxmuu1 2:1.0.4-2 X11 miscellaneous micro-utility li ii libxrandr22:1.3.0-2 X11 RandR extension library ii libxrender1 1:0.9.4-2 X Rendering Extension client libra ii libxt61:1.0.6-1 X11 toolkit intrinsics library ii libxtrap6 2:1.0.0-5 X11 event trapping extension libra ii libxxf86misc1 1:1.0.1-3 X11 XFree86 miscellaneous extensio ii libxxf86vm1 1:1.0.2-1 X11 XFree86 video mode extension l ii x11-common1:7.4+4X Window System (X.Org) infrastruc x11-xserver-utils recommends no packages. Bug#529651: Should have means of generating xorg.conf file for those who dislike automatic stuff
Package: xserver-xorg Version: 7.4 Severity: wishlist Hi, Subject says it all, really. I'm sure the userfriendly police believes that getting rid of configuration and letting the computer guess everything is the right thing to do, but it is not. Case in point: Xorg 7.4 autodetects my display card just fine, however whenever I run xrandr --output VGA --auto --above LVDS it will tell me that the virtual size is not large enough. I know what the problem is, and how to fix it: just edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf, find where it says Section Display and add a SubSection of the correct name where you say Virtual 3000 2000 or some such -- it just needs to be large enough, really. However, with Xorg 7.4, there is no xorg.conf, so I have to either read the manpages for whatever makes xorg decide where to fetch its configuration at this point in time (not really an improvement to the previous situation, really) or I have to write an xorg.conf _from scratch_ without any help from the xserver-xorg package (*definitely* not an improvement). The file /usr/share/xserver-xorg/examples/xorg.conf is no help, since it does not match my hardware, and therefore I have to guess what the right driver is. I tried running 'X -configure', but the file it generates is not what it uses when I run X without xorg.conf (for starters, the keyboard layout says 'us', while it *should* say 'be'). I've now been trying to come up with a working xorg.conf for the past few hours, and haven't made much progress. Please do not tell your power users to go fuck themselves because you think that making life easier for users who're afraid of config files (and therefore couldn't care less about whether configuration is in an XML file, in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, or somplace else) is a good thing. kthxbye. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-x-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#364489: xkbcomp looks for files in the wrong directory
Package: xbase-clients Version: 1:7.0.0-4 Severity: normal Hi, (filing this on xbase-clients rather than xorg-xserver-core, since according to strace, xkbcomp is the thing that actually looks at the files) Since the move to X11R7, I had issues with my laptop's keyboard (an Apple PowerBook). Being lazy (and not in the vicinity of another system to fix the laptop, should I fuck up the keyboard), I didn't check it out until today. My X keyboard definition looks like this: Section InputDevice Identifier Generic Keyboard Driver keyboard Option CoreKeyboard Option XkbRules xfree86 Option XkbModel macintosh Option XkbLayout wouter EndSection Which should mean that X would look for a keymap with the macintosh geometry, and the wouter layout. Indeed, with previous versions of X, and my keymap in /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/macintosh/wouter, this used to work correctly; however, for it to work with current versions of X, it only works if I put my modified keymap in /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/wouter, rather than in /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/macintosh_vndr/wouter, as I would expect. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing') Architecture: powerpc (ppc) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.16-1-powerpc Locale: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] (charmap=ISO-8859-15) Versions of packages xbase-clients depends on: ii libc6 2.3.6-7 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libfontconfig1 2.3.2-5.1generic font configuration library ii libfreetype62.1.10-3 FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libfs6 2:1.0.0-3X11 Font Services library ii libgl1-mesa-glx [libgl1]6.4.1-0.4A free implementation of the OpenG ii libice6 1:1.0.0-3X11 Inter-Client Exchange library ii libpng12-0 1.2.8rel-5.1 PNG library - runtime ii libsm6 1:1.0.0-4X11 Session Management library ii libx11-62:1.0.0-6X11 client-side library ii libxau6 1:1.0.0-3X11 authorisation library ii libxaw7 1:1.0.1-5X11 Athena Widget library ii libxcursor1 1.1.5.2-5X cursor management library ii libxext61:1.0.0-4X11 miscellaneous extension librar ii libxft2 2.1.8.2-6FreeType-based font drawing librar ii libxi6 1:1.0.0-5X11 Input extension library ii libxkbfile1 1:1.0.2-3X11 keyboard file manipulation lib ii libxmu6 1:1.0.1-3X11 miscellaneous utility library ii libxmuu11:1.0.1-3X11 miscellaneous micro-utility li ii libxrandr2 2:1.1.0.2-4 X11 RandR extension library ii libxrender1 1:0.9.0.2-4 X Rendering Extension client libra ii libxss1 1:1.0.1-4X11 Screen Saver extension library ii libxt6 1:1.0.0-4X11 toolkit intrinsics library ii libxtrap6 1:1.0.0-3X11 event trapping extension libra ii libxtst61:1.0.1-3X11 Testing -- Resource extension ii libxv1 1:1.0.1-3X11 Video extension library ii libxxf86dga12:1.0.0-3X11 Direct Graphics Access extensi ii libxxf86vm1 1:1.0.0-4X11 XFree86 video mode extension l ii x11-common 1:7.0.10 X Window System (X.Org) infrastruc ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3-11 compression library - runtime xbase-clients recommends no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#364489: xkbcomp looks for files in the wrong directory
reopen 364489 thanks On Sun, Apr 23, 2006 at 08:55:59PM +0100, Daniel Stone wrote: On Sun, Apr 23, 2006 at 08:21:41PM +0200, Wouter Verhelst wrote: Which should mean that X would look for a keymap with the macintosh geometry, You're confusing model and geometry. If I am, that's only because XKB uses confusing terminology. There's XkbLayout in xorg.conf, which maps to a directory called symbols, XkbModel which maps to keymap, and so on. It'd probably be better if those terms would be unified. and the wouter layout. Correct. The pc/, macintosh/, *_vndr/ directories under symbols are deprecated. The fix is to write keyboard layouts that are portable across models, for the general case. That's simply impossible. An apple ADB keyboard as it appears on their laptops lacks a whole bunch of keys that a regular PC keyboard does have; the keys RALT, and INS are not available on my laptop, and some of the other keys (e.g., DELE) are only available through awkward key combinations involving Fn. My own keyboard mapping therefore does some things that would be very strange indeed on 'regular' keyboard (one with the normal lay-out) but that are good (and wanted) on an apple keyboard. Moreover, Apple has a different idea about what a Belgian keyboard is than most PC keyboards do. If I use a Belgian PC keyboard layout on my macintosh laptop, I don't get the characters that are printed on the keys. This way lies madness. Closing as invalid, since this is a user configuration issue. Then at the very minimum this should be documented. Rather than having a non-working macintosh_vndr directory, it should either work, or be documented that it needs to be enabled somehow (by an option in xorg.conf, I guess?), or be removed. A directory on disk with keymaps that cannot ever possibly be used is a bug in my book. -- Fun will now commence -- Seven Of Nine, Ashes to Ashes, stardate 53679.4 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#296876: xvfb-run: does not properly look for xauth
Package: xvfb Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-10 Severity: normal I have a cron job that needs an X server to be present, so wanted to use xvfb-run to make this work. However, there's an issue; my cron output looks like this: xvfb-run: error: xauth command not found even though xbase-clients is installed. This seems to be because xvfb-run looks for xauth using 'which', while xauth is installed in /usr/bin/X11/xauth; using which will thus work if that directory is in $PATH, but that is not usually the case when something is being called from cron. -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.8.1 Locale: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages xvfb depends on: ii libc6 2.3.2.ds1-20 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libfreetype62.1.7-2.3FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii zlib1g 1:1.2.2-3compression library - runtime -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. This can be worked around by using 'us+srvr_ctrl' as a keymap instead of plainly 'us'. There is no problem with F1-F12 function keys, but for the keypad Ctrl+Alt+KP_Divide and Ctrl+Alt+KP_Multiply are assigned to F25 and F26 respectively, whereas loading srvr_ctrl redefines them to XF86_Ungrab and XF86_ClearGrab. Can we assume that those definitions were seldom used and override them with standard XFree86 ones? There is no function key above F12 on my keyboard. This could be just me, dunno; perhaps I have to use one of the bucky bit keys to reach F25. There used to be a bug report on glibc regarding that issue, which was rather quickly reassigned to the kernel-patch-2.4.7-m68k package. Since, to date, nobody ever solved the issue, the latter package has now been removed from the archive. What's the real problem? I'm running 2.4.20 (from Linux/m68k CVS) on my Amiga, with glibc-2.2.5-3? Or is this version glibc too old to exhibit the problem? No, it is not; according to the bug report, problems started with glibc 2.2.4. I must admit that I personally never tried running a 2.4 kernel on my m68k box, since I did not find the time back then to try it out, and did not hear any success reports from people running 2.4 on m68k (not on [EMAIL PROTECTED], on [EMAIL PROTECTED], or in comp.os.linux.m68k). In fact, yours is the first success report I ever heard. Also, I vaguely remember something about this bug being Mac-specific, but I might have been dreaming about that part.
