Bug#619061: xserver-xorg-core: introduce /etc/default/ configfile replacing xorg.conf

2011-03-20 Thread arne anka
Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 2:1.9.4.901-1
Severity: wishlist

on all computers i own (notably netbooks), one of the first things i do,
is disabling AIGLX (i never understood, what importance it has to get
fance desktop effects, justifying setting that as a default).

just to disable, i need to create a basic, working xorg.conf for only
the line AIGLX off. it's rather a waste.

so, i'd prefer to have a file in /etc/default/ where i could define
AIGLX to be disabled and Xorg, when starting takes that into account
when creating its configuration.

i cvould still profit from Xorg's dynamic autoconfiguration and, yet,
would not have to sacrify resources to fancy effects i have no use for.

Bug#572717: libgl1-mesa-dri: do not depend on libdrm-radeon1

2010-03-05 Thread arne anka
Package: libgl1-mesa-dri
Version: 7.7-4
Severity: normal

apparently ati has gained some popularity again lately, but i don't
think it justifies to make a non-chip specific package depend on a
particular chip's (family) lib.
while it is a nuisance on any normal pc, it is a no-go on limited
devices like the freerunner.

in my experience it has become a real pest lately that a lot of
packages define unnecessary dependencies because it doesn't matter
with today's computers -- but it does matter and even more with a
distribution that attempts to be available on a plethora of devices, not
all having abundant memory, disk space or cpu.

Bug#564599: xorg: more intelligent depency check upon upgrade

2010-01-10 Thread arne anka
Package: xorg
Version: 1:7.5+1
Severity: normal

yesterdays upgrade totally broke my X, making the computer effectively
unusable for work.

what happend?
xorg was upgraded to 7.5, although the used nvidia proprietary driver
(from the debian repos!) is not yet functional with the new version.

nvidia-glx is available, the necessary kernel module/source package not
-- therefore nvidia-glx is not installable.
no warning of any kind appeared, pointing out the possible breakage.

i'd really appreciate a more intelligent depency check in the lines of:
- what driver is currently used (xorg.conf)? if there's no xorg.conf,
most likely the default xorg driver, determined by xorg itself is used
-- and with a new release, the driver will be available automatically.
if there's an xorg.conf and the xorg.conf specifies a driver, it should
be easy to check for a package of that driver.
- is it compatible with the new Xorg package?
- if no: is there an installable newer, compatible package for that
  driver available?

if the answer to one of the last two questions is no, at least a
dialog pointing out the issue and asking for a decision should appear.

Bug#551082: closed by Julien Cristau jcris...@debian.org (Re: Bug#551082: dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg does not create xorg.conf anymore)

2009-10-15 Thread arne anka

Now that it can in most cases, we don't create an
xorg.conf since that would actively make things worse.

you said it yourself: in most cases. what about the cases, it doesn't?
in last week i experienced on two out of three computers that the
autodetection fails.

what are people supposed to do?

X dumps a config file to its log (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) when xorg.conf
doesn't exist, you can probably copy that and start from there.

the stuff X dumps is rather worthless -- the stanza included in the
report's log is not even usably as a starting point.

i am not talking about writing always an xorg.conf but about a well
documented way to produce one, when needed.

i don't understand what was wrong with
 dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
and i certainly don't understand where that blind trust to those
automatisms comes from -- everbody sooner or later experiences failing
automatisms. why not including a path to get out of the mess an automatism
puts you in?

Bug#362922: xfonts-base: font-pathes change without notice

2006-04-16 Thread Arne Anka
Package: xfonts-base
Version: 1:1.0.0-3
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

the pathes where the fonst are stored chanbed from yetserday to today
without notice!!! my x did not start up anymore
instead of the former /usr/libX11/fonts/ the fonts are now at
/usr/share/fonts/X11/ -- but my xorg.conf does not know about that i was in no
way informed about suxch a crucial change.
instead x failed because it could not find 'fixed'.
it's not the only bad documented change in xorg 7 at the expense of
those configuring their system by hand instead of using insufficient
tools of debian.
