FWIW, I'd prefer to see the clients in separate (binary) packages from
the server, which may be running on some other host.

Also, in general, do the programs in each new package all have similar
dependencies now? IIRC, one motivation for refactoring was complaints
about xbase-clients depending on a lot of libraries that only a
handful of the programs it contains actually needs, so it would be
unfortunate if such dependency pollution were still present.

Are you planning to split the binary package only or also the source?

Regarding what Fedora does, I don't see why we would have to split into
so many packages. Moving xauth in its own package seems important.
Splitting all tiny client from server utilities too. However, for
instance, I don't see why appres/editres/listres/viewres would need to
be in their own xbase-resutils, they could stay with xrdb or something
like that. Also the difference between xfonts-utils and xfs programs
does not look easy to understand.

my 2 cents...

I hadn't thought of that, but as we spoke on #debian-x, we could use one
big source which then would generate binary bundles, with the exception
of xauth, xinit, xfs and xsm which use their own source packages?

Yes, here is the latest list (updated when something new comes up):

http://users.tkk.fi/~tjaalton/xbase-clients-split.txt

general consensus on #debian-x seemed to be that this looks pretty good
now. There are however some packages which are not in any of the new bundles.
Also, renaming xfonts-utils and xutils-dev was thought as too riski,
since there are too many reverse deps on them.

Further comments welcome :)

[RFC] Splitting/reorganizing xbase-clients xutils

2007-05-04 Thread Timo Aaltonen

Hi!

Currently there are some bugs on xbase-clients (151613, 153551, 199675,
332521) where it has been requested to reorganize xbase-clients/xutils. I
asked about this a while back, and now I'm willing to step up and do
what's needed for that..

First, here's a brutal work done exactly the way it's done in Fedora
(please don't flame me to death, this was just to get something as a
starting point :)

Suggested bundle name (Fedora name)

# sense for servers

# xsm pulls openssh as Build-Dep, which makes slower buildd's crawl

Finally, here are the leftover bits from xbase-clients and xutils not
found from Fedora:

# xbase-clients

ico
xcalc (xbase-apps?)

xditview(xbase-apps?)
xedit (xbase-apps?)
xf86dga
xgc
xman(xbase-apps?)
xmore (xbase-apps?)

# xutils
scripts

The leftovers could be added to a sensible bundle, or dropped.

It's getting late here, so there might be some errors left.. Let the
discussion begin!

2007-05-04 Thread Julien Cristau
(disclaimer: it's late, and I'm drunk)

I agree that splitting xbase-clients makes sense. Not sure about
xutils, I think I don't have a particular opinion on that one.

Last I looked, the build-dep on ssh could easily be removed by fixing
the configure.ac file for xsm. We should probably do this at some
point.

Cheers,
Julien
