lib status [was: 7.1 protos up-to-date in experimental - ready for unstable?]

2006-08-06 Thread Drew Parsons
If libraries need to be strictly synced with their protos, then, going
down the list of protos, we're still waiting in experimental (if not
 unstable) for
   libx11 1.0.1 (which I assume matches x11proto-core)
   libxcomposite 0.3
   libxdamage 1.0.3
   libxevie1.0.1
libXfontcache 1.0.2 (not in Debian at all yet, maybe not so crucial?)
   libxkbfile 1.0.3, libxkbui 1.0.2
   libXrandr 1.1.1
libXScrnSaver 1.1.0 (not in Debian at all yet!)
   libxxf86dga 1.0.1

Some of these are now done.

Here is a list of all outstanding lib upgrades (not just the ones following a
proto) not yet in the archives, comparing against latest upstream:

libX11-1.0.3 (in svn, needs uploading)
libXau-1.0.2
libXaw-1.0.2
libXcomposite-0.3
libXcursor-1.1.7
libXi-1.0.1
libXrandr-1.1.1 (in svn, needs uploading)
libXxf86dga-1.0.1 (in svn, needs uploading)

[what the hell is libxss ?? ]

The following libs exists upstream but do not exist anywhere in Debian:
libXScrnSaver-1.1.0
libXfontcache-1.0.2

Also
liblbxutil-1.0.1 (I believe lbx is deprecated)
liboldX-1.0.1 (by definition we don't want it?)

(we don't need libAppleWM or libWindowsWM)

Not without dealing with at least one issue, I think: Anyone remember
what happened when David accidentally uploaded packages built against
x11proto-fixes-dev 4.0, then people tried running the binaries against
libxfixes3 1:3.0.x? I think the x11proto-fixes-dev Conflicts:
libxfixes-dev probably needs bumping to ( 1:4.0) or similar, etc.

p.s. in case you're wondering why I'm in such a rush to get 7.1 from
experimental to unstable, some serious improvements have been made in
drivers (especially i810) which I'd like to see as soon as possible.

While it should be possible to use the current xf86-video-intel with
xorg-server 1.0, as Daniel pointed out, there's no question that moving
to 7.1 would rid us of a lot of upstream issues.

Debian does not contain a x11proto package for xf86rushproto,

I'd much rather have the libs and preferrably the server and drivers ready
in experimental first. Especially since those will be the first serious
test of the protocol headers. Not that I'm worried about the headers, but I
don't see a big gain in moving the protocol headers in ahead of the libs
right now. The key is to get the functional parts (libs, server, drivers)
working anyway, so pushing ahead with that is more important.

libfont1.2 may also be useful since it supports freetype2.2.

Nope, we don't need any of those three. AppleWM is only required on
Darwin, WindowsWM on Windows, and the whole XF86Rush extension has been
deprecated because it was complete crack. libxxf86rush should similarly
disappear, if someone took the initiative to package it (it was never in
Ubuntu).

You know you can build the new i810 driver against the old xorg-server?
Modularisation, man!
