Bug#245021: xserver-xfree86: X crashes sometimes while i830 driver is loaded, leaves screen unusable and garbled

2004-07-12 Thread Michael Olson
This problem seems to be completely fixed in the 3-4 most recent
versions of XFree86 in unstable. It can probably be closed now. I
haven't experienced the error in over a month.

This tells me that the bug is really with the i830 Mesa DRI module.

Thanks for following up!

2004-05-13 Thread Michael Olson
So far, I haven't noticed any crashes since I removed xlibmesa-dri.
If there's anything else I can do, like reinstalling xlibmesa-dri,
running gdb on something, waiting for a crash..., please let me know.

I'll try removing the xlibmesa-dri package and reinstalling
xscreensaver-gl. I'll let you know when I have another crash, or in
two weeks otherwise.

Well, that's just a workaround, though I'm very glad to know that one
exists.

Do you have the xlibmesa-dri package installed as well?

If so, could you try removing that, but reinstalling xscreensaver-gl?

I'm trying to determine if the crash is actually in the Mesa DRI module
for your video chipset.

Yes. A high percentage of all server crash reports we receive happen
when xscreensaver is running.

Especially when the OpenGL screenhacks are used.

This is probably because the graphics engine is in a bad state and the
the driver-specific LeaveVT() logic doesn't succeed in unscrewing it.

All I can suggest as a workaround is to configure xscreensaver to not
use the screenhacks that seem to cause trouble.

Bug#245021: xserver-xfree86: X crashes sometimes while i830 driver is loaded, leaves screen unusable and garbled

2004-04-20 Thread Michael Olson
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0-7
Severity: important

Sometimes when the computer [Dell Inspiron i1100 laptop, i830M
graphics card] is left unattended for a few hours, X crashes or locks
up. This is not heat-related, like some laptop crashes, so it's
probably some sort of bug. I've attached the /var/log/XFree86.0.log
file from the time of the crash to this message.

When the crash occurs, the screen is frozen with the display from
XScreensaver, which is always running at the time of the crash. When
I press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get back to a terminal, the screen is split
into two, and the text is green and smaller than usual.
