Hi,

I only did on new install since I have reported this bug. That
installation did work. However, I have no idea whether the original
problem is fixed.

Regards
Marco

Hi,

About 3 years ago, you reported a bug to the Debian BTS regarding the X
server not starting. Did you reproduce this problem recently? If not, I
will close this bug in the next weeks.

Thanks,
Brice

I compiled it myself, but from the debian kernel-source package.
Should I provide the config for the kernel?

Well, I am not used to using gdb. Can you please provide me information
on how to do this?
Calling 'gdb X' results in the following:

---/---
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ gdb X
GNU gdb 6.1-debian

(gdb) run

wrapper config file
/etc/X11/Xwrapper.config
X: user not authorized to run the X server, aborting.

Program exited with code 01.
(gdb)

And can you also tell me how I get the backtrace directly into a file instead
of being printed to the terminal? Thanks for your help.

This problem might be caused by the recent removal of non-free code. We
would like you to provide us with more information and perform a debugging
session.

Which kernel are you using? is the 2.4.25 that you are running a debian
package (and if so exactly which version) or a vanilla kernel you compiled
your self?

Please install xserver-xfree86-dbg and run a gdb session on it.
Theoretically even with the code removal X should be able to fail nicely
and not to segfault.

Thanks a lot
Fabio

Since my apt-get upgrade yesterday, X refuses to start with the message:

*** If unresolved symbols were reported above, they might not
*** be the reason for the server aborting.

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

There were some message about symbols that couldn't be found. These had
to do with GLCore and speedo. I reinstalled xserver-common and
xserver-xfree86 and now these messages are gone, but X still refuses to
start.
