Sadly, the problem returned, then went away, then returned, etc. A
day or so after reporting its disappearance I saw the problem again,
but so fleetingly I wondered if I had really pressed the modifier key.
Yesterday it came back with a vengeance, but just when I was trying to
isolate a test case it went away again. It returned this morning, but
it's obviously intermittent.

The behavior: I start X (with kdm or startx), open an xterm, hit ^D to
close it and just get "d". As long as I keep the Ctrl key held down I
can keep hitting "d" all I want and I get "d" etc. Then I release
Ctrl, and the next ^D is interpreted properly.

Same for Meta.

This one is 100% reproducible.

Thank you so much for all your hard work,

Actually, we know of continuing problems with some of the modifier keys,
and we are working to get a good solution in place. It's a lot more
complicated than you'd think, and simply reverting the change that was made
in -5 has its drawbacks.

> If you'd rather I didn't purge/binge, let me know.

No, please go ahead if you like. I don't think it will help anything, but
it probably won't hurt either.

Thanks for following up!

Yes, thank you, I no longer can reproduce the problem where the first
use of Alt, Meta, etc. per login session is ignored.

I do still have the problem where in an xterm (but not an Emacs
window) I have to press Alt+Windows to get the effect of Alt.

Because nobody else appears to be having this latter problem (I got no
response about it on Debian-user), I'm thinking I might just purge all
X packages and reinstall them to see if it goes away. I don't know of
any way my setup is nonstandard, but obviously not everyone is having
the problem.

If you'd rather I didn't purge/binge, let me know.

xfree86 4.3.0.dfsg.1-6 is now in unstable. Do they keys work for you now?

Bug#254923: xserver-xfree86: [keyboard] alt key not working when starting from display manager

2004-07-07 Thread JOSE MIGUEL MARTINEZ

I have already fixed it setting up correctly kde keyboard preferences
(105keys keyboard) and XFree Config. I think after a lot of testing
some clients were changing keyboard (kde control panel) in my sessions
and I am not sure if some xfree86 upgrade had something to do too, but
now It works for me with no hacking, just configuring X and kde. :-)

Thanks for all,
txemi.

This is a duplicate of many other bugs.

A workaround for the problem is documented in the logs of most or all of
them.

The bug is in xlibs (XKB data), not the XFree86 X server or its keyboard
driver.

We expect the bug to be fixed in the next release.

I spoke too soon; that patch didn't make that problem go away. The
first use of Alt, Control, etc. per xdm login session is still
ignored.

Bug#254923: xserver-xfree86: [keyboard] alt key not working

2004-06-29 Thread Pete Harlan
I'm seeing this too, though slightly differently than the two other
ways described.

When I start X (on sid i386, with or without the alt_tab_fix.diff
applied), whether from kdm or from "startx", the Alt key works
normally in Emacs running as a separate X app, and Meta (i.e.,
"Windows" key) with tab works to switch windows in wmaker, but neither
is recognized in an xterm (or "emacs -nw" from an xterm of course).

I have found that I can work around this by holding down Alt and the
windows key together; then I get the behavior I used to get from Alt
alone. The windows key by itself doesn't do anything.

The alt_tab_fix.diff did clear up the problem I was having in that
each initial use of a modifier key was ignored. So Windows-L, which I
have mapped in wmaker to open a local xterm, would be seen as an
ordinary L the first time I tried it. The second time an thereafter
it would open a new xterm as expected. The same thing for control and
other modifier keys. This problem went away after applying
alt_tab_fix.diff.

I noticed this showing up perhaps a week ago.

Thanks for your time,

--Pete

Bug#254923: xserver-xfree86: [keyboard] alt key not working when starting from display manager

2004-06-17 Thread txemi
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-4
Severity: important

alt key does not work when I start X from display manager.

symptoms: I can not type keys that require alt key (@ # ]...)
Instead I type other things so I suppose there is some problem with the
interpretation of the Alt key code.

When does it happens: It happens when I start any X session (gnome, kde,
icewm...) from any display manager (gdm, kdm).

When does it NOT happen: When I start any X session (gnome, kde,
icewm...) from de console trough startx and .xinitr

Who complaints about it:
  - There is a keyboard error in logs. (attached)
  - Gnome shows an error dialog telling not being able to set up
keyboard. (I will attach this message in a related bug).
  - KDE keyboard applet complaints about no being abble to set local
keyboard ("err" shown in taskbar icon instead of country flag)

Comments:
  - It is strange that it only happens when X is started from any
display manager, not when started directly with startx.
  - Is disturbing as I cannot use any display manage to use X (I
like kdm to "autologin")

Related bugs:
  - Something similar happened to me some time ago with "< >" keys. They
desappeared from my keyboard for a while. This bug fixed without my
intervention in some upgrade. There is some opened bug related to it
in the BTS.

thanks,
txemi.
