Did that. Didn't help. The fonts still look like as if the antialiasing
runs amok...

Thanks, please post a log file.

Also, can you try rebuilding the package without
debian/patches/02_ppc_fix.diff ? I think I've seen similar artifacts
with current xf86-video-ati CVS (that this patch is an earlier snapshot
of) when the DRI is disabled.

No change.

I also disabled:
Section "Extensions"
Option  "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection
No change.
