Yeah, just had a bit of a wrestle with the nvidia drivers since I changed
my config back to the working configuration. Plainly, I should have
tested restarting X in working mode since I last upgraded before trying it
 in non-working mode.

I am sorry, I can't see a clear reply here to my question above. Does the
bug occurs with single-head ATI? Or do you only see it when both nVidia and
ATI heads are enabled?

Does it help if you upgrade xserver-xorg-video-ati to 6.6.192 currently
 in experimental?

 That's definitely worth a try.

Hmm, no that doesn't change anything (except the chipsets have been
renamed so I had to remove a line from the config).

What if you change ati to vesa in the config? What if you use vesa
for both heads? You won't get DRI during this test, but it could help us
locating the problem in the driver(s) or in the core.

thanks,
Brice

Hi. Sorry it took a while to get round to this.

I can't find an xserver-xorg-core in experimental, so I tried
2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-5 and it appears to not be fixed there. Xorg sits there
with 99% CPU utilisation and a black screen. I have attached my log file.
The config file is unchanged from earlier.

From what I see in the log, the ATI board is correctly initialized by
the ati driver 6.6.3, but the nvidia driver is not found for the nvidia
board. It would mean that the bug is not related to ATI+nvidia/nv
dual-head, and actually appears with single-head ATI. Does this make
sense to you?

Does it help if you upgrade xserver-xorg-video-ati to 6.6.192 currently
in experimental?

Bug#390172: xserver-xorg-core: X hangs on startup with black screen with dual head on amd64

2006-09-29 Thread Matthew Wakeling
Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 2:1.1.1-8
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

When starting the X server on a dual-head amd64 system, it fails to initialise
the screen, and ends up halting on a black screen. The X server process remains
running, but one cannot do anything with it.

The server appears to halt when it tries to initialise the second graphics card
using the int10 module.

Logging into the system via the network still works.

Pressing CTRL-ALT-F1 does not return the user to a text-mode console, so it
renders the whole system unusable to anyone who does not know how to prevent
the X server from starting on boot. Moreover, if the X server is killed and
started again, the whole system crashes.
