The machine is an AMD Athlon X64 Dual core, the graphics adapter is an
ATI Radeon 9600 (RV350), the Monitor is an Acer AL1711, plugged into the
adapter via VGA.

No, neither nor.

The result is the same (no X with the latest package version) plus my
usual resolution of 1280×1024 won’t work with the old version. Putting
those lines back makes it work again.

More details. Machine model? Monitor model? How is it plugged? We have
some info about all this in the log, but the breakage could be related
to things being wrongly detected.

Do you have another monitor to test with? Or a DVI cable?

Can you try commenting out HorizSync, VertRefresh, and Modes?

adapter) do you need?

Both my current version and the latest version of this package fail to
launch X if there is no xorg.conf. The Xorg.0.log for this case is
attached. (Summary: the auto configuration fails to set up the busIDs
properly; thus unrelated to the actual problem.)

What kind of machine is this? Can you without any xorg.conf at all in
case something is bad in yours?
